Ramadan: The Blessed Guest

Ramadan literally termed as the ninth month of calendar and the month of fasting for preaching and reaching Allah. When Ramadan comes, all the Islamic devotees get energized and excited to put up the lanterns and decorations all around to welcome the blessed month. We must welcome Ramadan with neat and tidy home, in neat dress and with prayers. Ramadan is the reminder of renewal of your mind and life to reach Allah. All Islamic devotees must fast from water, food and luxuries. The most important thing to remind in Ramadan is that devotees should fast by keeping the oath that this year I want to grow my character to be more like that of Prophet Muhammad and to cherish goodness to the society.

Reem Shaikh is a 17-year-old Muslim hails from Houston. Wonderful news is that she has finished memorizing Qur’an when she was just seven and traveled to Egypt to learn Arabic. She did not get an opportunity to go to regular schools. She was homeschooled until the age of 12. Then she pursued her bachelors in Islamic Studies at Qatar University. The very fact is that children who are homeschooled will be stereotyped as illiterates. But case for Reem is something different. She is now a social activist and joined Doha youth forum, a forum from UN to give youth an opportunity to voice their opinions, last year. She was the only young Muslim girl who addressed UN delegates and answered their questions on role of youth in fighting crimes around the world.

Ramadan is approaching fast, insha'Allah, are you ready? What goals have you set for yourself this year? We know that while the month of Ramadan is upon us, life continues. The majority of us will still have to go to work, rush to school, take care of household responsibilities, look after our families, etc. Although our schedules will still be jam-packed, insha’Allah, we will strive to make whatever adjustments are needed to wake up for Suhoor, read more Qur’an, make it to taraweeh, and wake up for tahajjud prayers. We will also try to eliminate distractions and vices, so we can purify and replenish our iman. Examples of such distractions are: • watching television • playing video games • listening to music • surfing the web • social media • spending hours on our cell phones, doing all of the above Why not use our “screen” time as opportunities for increasing our Islamic knowledge?
