Sahih Muslim Book - 15, Hadith - 2944

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنِى أَبِى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ أَبِى سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ - رضى الله عنهما - قَالَ أَهْلَلْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- بِالْحَجِّ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَحِلَّ وَنَجْعَلَهَا عُمْرَةً فَكَبُرَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْنَا وَضَاقَتْ بِهِ صُدُورُنَا فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فَمَا نَدْرِى أَشَىْءٌ بَلَغَهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ أَمْ شَىْءٌ مِنْ قِبَلِ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ « أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَحِلُّوا فَلَوْلاَ الْهَدْىُ الَّذِى مَعِى فَعَلْتُ كَمَا فَعَلْتُمْ ». قَالَ فَأَحْلَلْنَا حَتَّى وَطِئْنَا النِّسَاءَ وَفَعَلْنَا مَا يَفْعَلُ الْحَلاَلُ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ التَّرْوِيَةِ وَجَعَلْنَا مَكَّةَ بِظَهْرٍ أَهْلَلْنَا بِالْحَجِّ.

It was narrated that Jabir bin Abdullah [may Allah be pleased with them] said: “We entered Ihram for Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (SAW), but when we came to Makkah he told us to exit Ihram and make it Umrah. We found that hard and felt anxious about it. News of that reached the Prophet (SAW), and we did not know whether he heard of it from heaven, or from the people. He said: ‘O people exit Ihram. Were it not for the sacrificial animal that is with me, I would do what you are doing. So we exited Ihram and had intercourse with our wives, and we did what those who are not in Ihram do, until the day of Al-Tarwiyah came, when we put Makkah behind us (to go to Mina and Arafat) and entered Ihram for Hajj.’
