Abu Umamah said: "While the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) was in the Masjid and we were sitting with him, a man came and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a sin that may dictate a punishment, so carry it out on me.' The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) remained silent and he said again: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a sin that may dictate a punishment, so . carry it out on me.' (The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) remained silent and he said it a third time, and the Iqamah was called for prayer. When the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w) left, the man followed him, and I (Abu Umamah) also followed the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) to see how he would answer the man. "The man caught up with the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a sin that may dictate a punishment, so carry it out on me.'" Abu Umamah said: "The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said to him: 'When you came out of your house, did you perform Wudu' and do it well?' He said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Then did you attend the prayer with us?' He said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said to him: 'Then Allah has forgiven your transgression' - or 'your sin.'"
