حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحِ بْنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ شِمَاسَةَ ، أَنَّ فُقَيْمًا اللَّخْمِيَّ ، قَالَ لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ : تَخْتَلِفُ بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ الْغَرَضَيْنِ وَأَنْتَ كَبِيرٌ يَشُقُّ عَلَيْكَ ، قَالَ عُقْبَةُ : لَوْلاَ كَلاَمٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ أُعَانِيهِ ، قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : فَقُلْتُ لاِبْنِ شَمَاسَةَ : وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّهُ قَالَ : مَنْ عَلِمَ الرَّمْيَ ، ثُمَّ تَرَكَهُ ، فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا ، أَوْ قَدْ عَصَى.
It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Shumasah that Fuqaim Al-Lakhmi said to 'Uqbah bin 'Amir: "You go between these two targets but you are an old man, and it must be difficult for you." 'Uqbah said: "Were it not for some words that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), I would not trouble myself." Al-Harith said: "I said to Ibn Shumasah: 'Why was that?' He said: "He (s.a.w) said: 'Whoever learns archery then abandons it, he is not one of us, or, he has sinned."'
