‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr said: “The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to me: ‘O ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr, I have heard that you fast all the day and pray all night. Do not do that, for your body is entitled to a share from you, your eye is entitled to a share from you, and your wife is entitled to a share for you. Fast and break the fast, fast three days of every month, for that is like fasting for a lifetime.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have the strength.’ He said: ‘Then observe the fast of Dawud, fast one day and not the next.”’ And he (‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr) used to say: “Would that I had accepted the concession.”
