بَلَىٰ قَدْ جَآءَتْكَ ءَايَـٰتِى فَكَذَّبْتَ بِهَا وَٱسْتَكْبَرْتَ وَكُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Bal a qad j a atka a y a tee faka thth abta bih a wa i stakbarta wakunta mina alk a fireen a
[But God will reply:] "Yea, indeed! My messages did come unto thee; but thou gayest them the lie, and wert filled with false pride, and wert among those who deny the truth!"
  - Mohammad Asad
Then Allah will say to him: "My revelations did come to you; but you denied them, were arrogant and you were among the disbelievers."
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Not at all! My revelations had already come to you, but you rejected them, acted arrogantly, and were one of the disbelievers.'
  - Mustafa Khattab
(But now the answer will be): Nay, for My revelations came unto thee, but thou didst deny them and wast scornful and wast among the disbelievers.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
"(The reply will be) `Nay but there came to thee My signs and thou didst reject them: thou wast haughty and became one of those who reject Faith!' " 4330 4331
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Cf. ii. 34. The example of the arch-sinner illustrates what happens in a minor degree in every kind of sinner.

The reply explains how all such pleas have been anticipated and met. It was deliberate rejection that will deserve and meet its consequences. It is further explained that the motive of sin, as with Satan, was haughtiness and Self.
