When Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet (peace be upon him) died, heprayed over him at the place where he used to sit.
This verse was revealed (in this way):"Guard the prayers andthe Asr prayer." We recited it (in this very way) as long asAllah desired. Allah then abrogated it and it was revealed: "Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer." Someone who wassitting with Shaqiq (one of the narrators in the chain oftransmitters) said: Now it implies the Asr prayer. Upon thisal-Bara' said: I have already informed you how this (verse) wasrevealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best. ImamMuslim said: Ashja'i narrated it from Sufyan ath-Thawri, whonarrated it from al-Aswad ibn Qays, who narrated it from Uqbah,who narrated it from al-Bara ibn Azib who said: We recited withthe Prophet (peace be upon him) (the above-mentioned verse likethis, i.e. instead of Salat al-Asr) for a certain period, as ithas been mentioned (in the hadith quoted above).
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "It is a duty for Muslims to bathe on Friday, and one may apply some of his wife's perfume; but if he can get none, water is a perfume for him."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying that this is a hasan tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone lends an animal for milking, or silver coins, or shows someone the way, it will be equivalent to his having emancipated a slave."

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) as saying that Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) said: What is your opinion about thedelight of a person whose camel, loaded with the provisions offood and drink, is lost it moves about, with its nose-stringtrailing, in the waterless desert where there is neither food nordrink. He wanders about in search of that camel until he iscompletely exhausted and then accidentally it happens to pass bythe trunk of a tree, its nose-string is caught in it and he findsit entangled therein? He (in response to the question of theHoly Prophet) said: Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) he wouldfeel highly delighted.Thereupon Allah's Apostle (peace be uponhim) said: By Allah, Allah is more delighted at the repentance ofHis servant than that person (is when he finds his lost camel).
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: Apostleof Allah, they ask thee for a legal decision about a kalalah.What is meant by kalalah? He replied: The verse revealed insummer is sufficient for you. I asked AbuIshaq: Does it mean aperson who dies and leaves neither children nor father? He said:This is so. The people think it is so.
Ubayd ibn Firuz said: I asked al-Bara' ibn Azib: What should beavoided in sacrificial animals? He said: The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) stood among us, and my fingers are smallerthan his fingers, and my fingertips are smaller than hisfingertips. He said (pointing with his fingers): Four (types ofanimals) should be avoided in sacrifice: A One-eyed animal whichhas obviously lost the sight of one eye, a sick animal which isobviously sick, a lame animal which obviously limps and an animalwith a broken leg with no marrow. I also detest an animal whichhas defective teeth. He said: Leave what you detest, but do notmake it illegal for anyone.
A maternal uncle of mine called AbuBurdah sacrificed before theprayer (for 'Id). The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said:Your goat is meant for flesh. He said: Apostle of Allah, I have adomestic kid with me. He said: Sacrifice it, but it is not validfor any man other than you.
Yunus ibn Ubayd, client of Muhammad ibn al-Qasim, said thatMuhammad ibn al-Qasim sent to al-Bara' ibn Azib to ask him aboutthe standard of the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him). Hesaid: It was black and square, being made of a woollen rug.
I was with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when the Apostleof Allah (peace be upon him) appointed him to be the governor ofthe Yemen. I collected some ounces of gold during my stay withhim. When Ali returned from the Yemen to the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) he said: I found that Fatimah had put oncoloured clothes and the smell of the perfume she had used waspervading the house. (He expressed his amazement at the use ofcoloured clothes and perfume.)She said: What is wrong with you?The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) has ordered hiscompanions to put off their ihram and they did so. Ali said: Isaid to her: I raised my voice in talbiyah for which the Prophet(peace be upon him) raised his voice (i.e. I wore ihram forqiran). Then I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him). He asked(me): How did you do? I replied: I raised my voice in talbiyah,for which the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his voice. Hesaid: I have brought the sacrificial animals with me and combinedumrah and hajj. He said to me: Sacrifice sixty-seven or sixty-sixcamels (for me) and withhold for yourself thirty-three orthirty-four, and withhold a piece (of flesh) for me from everycamel.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Beautify the Qur'an withyour voices.
I accompanied the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) oneighteen journeys and I never saw him fail to pray two rak'ahswhen the sun had passed the meridian before offering the noonprayer.
Al-Bara' described to us (the nature of prostration). He placedhis hands (palms), reclined on his knees, and raised his hips; hesaid: This is how the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) usedto prostrate himself.
I saw that the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) raised hishands when he began prayer, but he did not raise them until hefinished (prayer).
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) began prayer, heraised his hands up to his ears, then he did not repeat.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pass through therow from one side to the other; he used to set out chests andshoulders in order, and say: Do not be irregular. And he wouldsay: Allah and His angels bless those who are near the firstrows.
When we would pray behind the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim), we liked to be on his right side. He (the Prophet) wouldsit turning his face towards us (and back towards the Ka'bah)(peace be upon him).
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked aboutperforming ablution after eating the flesh of the camel. Hereplied: Perform ablution, after eating it. He was asked aboutperforming ablution after eating meat. He replied: Do not performablution after eating it. He was asked about saying prayer inplaces where the camels lie down. He replied: Do not offer prayerin places where the camels lie down. These are the places ofSatan. He was asked about saying prayer in the sheepfolds. Hereplied: You may offer prayer in such places; these are theplaces of blessing.
We went out with the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) to thefuneral of a man of the Ansar, but when we reached the grave, theniche in the side had not yet been made, so the Prophet (peace beupon him) sat down facing the qiblah, and we sat down along withhim.
Al-Bara' had a she-camel which was accustomed to graze thestanding crop belonging to the people. She entered a garden anddid damage to it. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) wasinformed about it. So he gave decision that the owners of gardensare responsible for guarding them by day, and the owners of theanimals are responsible for guarding them by night. Any damagedone by animals during the night is a responsibility lying ontheir owners.
The people passed by the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)with a Jew who was blackened with charcoal and who was beingflogged. He called them and said: Is this the prescribedpunishment for a fornicator? They said: Yes. He then called ona learned man among them and asked him: I adjure you by Allah Whorevealed the Torah to Moses, do you find this prescribedpunishment for a fornicator in your divine Book? He said: ByAllah, no. If you had not adjured me about this, I should nothave informed you. We find stoning to be prescribed punishmentfor a fornicator in our Divine Book. But it (fornication) becamefrequent in our people of rank; so when we seized a person ofrank, we left him alone, and when we seized a weak person, weinflicted the prescribed punishment on him. So we said: Come, letus agree on something which may be enforced equally on people ofhigher and lower rank. So we agreed to blacken the face of acriminal with charcoal, and flog him, and we abandoned stoning. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: O Allah, I amthe first to give life to Thy command which they have killed. Sohe commanded regarding him (the Jew) and he was stoned to death. Allah Most High then sent down: "O Apostle, let not those whorace one another into unbelief, make thee grieve..." up to "Theysay: If you are given this, take it, but if not, beware!...." upto "And if any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hathrevealed, they are (no better than) unbelievers," about Jews, upto "And if any do fail to judge by (the right of) what Allah hathrevealed, they are no better than) wrong-doers" about Jews: andrevealed the verses up to "And if any do fail to judge by (thelight of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than)those who rebel." About this he said: This whole verse wasrevealed about the infidels.
while I was wandering in search of my camels which had strayed, acaravan or some horsemen carrying a standard came forward. Thebedouin began to go round me for my position with the Prophet(peace be upon him). They came to a domed structure, took out aman from it, and struck his neck. I asked about him. They told methat he had married his father's wife.
I met my uncle who was carrying a standard. I asked him: Whereare you going? He said: The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)has sent me to a man who has married his father's wife. He hasordered me to cut off his head and take his property.
We went out with the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)accompanying the bier of a man of the Ansar. When we reached hisgrave, it was not yet dug. So the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) sat down and we also sat down around him as if birds wereover our heads. He had in his hand a stick with which he wasscratching the ground.He then raised his head and said: Seekrefuge with Allah from the punishment in the grave. He said ittwice or thrice. The version of Jabir adds here: He hears thebeat of their sandals when they go back, and at that moment he isasked: O so and so! Who is your Lord, what is your religion, andwho is your Prophet? Hannad's version says: Two angels will cometo him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is your Lord?He willreply: My Lord is Allah. They will ask him: What is yourreligion? He will reply: My religion is Islam. They will askhim: What is your opinion about the man who was sent on a missionamong you? He will reply: He is the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him). They will ask: Who made you aware of this?He willreply: I read Allah's Book, believed in it, and considered ittrue; which is verified by Allah's words: "Allah's Book, believedin it, and considered it true, which is verified by Allah'swords: "Allah establishes those who believe with the word thatstands firm in this world and the next." The agreed versionreads: Then a crier will call from Heaven: My servant has spokenthe truth, so spread a bed for him from Paradise, clothe him fromParadise, and open a door for him into Paradise. So some of itsair and perfume will come to him, and a space will be made forhim as far as the eye can see.He also mentioned the death ofthe infidel, saying: His spirit will be restored to his body, twoangels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is yourLord? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will askhim: What is your religion? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do notknow. They will ask: Who was the man who was sent on a missionamong you? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. Then acrier will call from Heaven: He has lied, so spread a bed for himfrom Hell, clothe him from Hell, and open for him a door intoHell. Then some of its heat and pestilential wind will come tohim, and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will becrushed together. Jabir's version adds: One who is blind anddumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledge-hammersuch that if a mountain were struck with it, it would becomedust. He will give him a blow with it which will be heard byeverything between the east and the west except by men and jinn,and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be restored to him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If two Muslims meet, shakehands, praise Allah, and ask Him for forgiveness, they will beforgiven.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Two Muslims will not meetand shake hands having their sins forgiven them before theyseparate.
I went in with AbuBakr when he had newly come to Medina and hefound his daughter Aisha lying down afflicted with fever. AbuBakrwent to her, and saying: How are you, girlie? kissed her on thecheek.
Al-Bara' heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "Beautify the Qur'an with your voices, for the beautiful voice increases the beauty of the Qur'an."
Darimi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Two Muslims will not meet and shake hands without having their sins forgiven them before they separate.
Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it. In AbuDawud's version be said, "When two Muslims meet, shake hands, praise Allah and ask Him for forgiveness they will be forgiven."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When youprostrate yourself, place the palms of your hands on the groundand raise your elbows.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) observed Qunut in themorning and evening (prayers).
When we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)we cherished to be on his right side so that his face would turntowards us (at the end of the prayers), and he (the narrator)said: I heard him say: O my Lord save me from Thy torment on theDay when Thou wouldst raise or gather Thy servants.
There happened to pass by Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) aJew blackened and lashed. Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him)called them (the Jews) and said: Is this the punishment that youfind in your Book (Torah) as a prescribed punishment foradultery? They said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) called one ofthe scholars amongst them and said: I ask you in the name ofAllah Who sent down the Torah to Moses if that is the prescribedpunishment for adultery, which you find in your Book. He said:No. Had you not asked me in the name of Allah, I should not havegiven you this information. We find stoning to death (as thepunishment prescribed in the Torah). However, this (crime)became quite common amongst our aristocratic class. So when wecaught hold of any rich person (indulging in this offence) wespared him, but when we caught hold of a helpless person weimposed the prescribed punishment upon him. We then said: Let usagree (on a punishment) which we can inflict upon both the richand the poor. So we decided to blacken the face with coal andflog as a substitute punishment for stoning. Thereupon Allah'sMessenger (peace be upon him) said: O Allah, I am the first torevive Thy command when they had cancelled it. He then gave theorder and he (the offender) was stoned to death. Allah, theMajestic and Glorious, sent down (this verse): "O Messenger, (thebehaviour of) those who vie with one another in denying the truthshould not grieve you..." up to "is vouchsafed unto you, acceptit" (v.41). It was said (by the Jews): Go to Muhammad; if hecommands you to blacken the face and award flogging (aspunishment for adultery), then accept it, but if he gives theverdict of stoning, then avoid it. It was (then) that Allah, theMajestic and Great, sent down (these verses:"...And they who donot judge in accordance with what Allah has revealed, are indeeddeniers of the truth" (v.44); "And they who do not judge inaccordance with what Allah has revealed--they, they indeed arethe wrongdoers" (v.45); "And they who do not judge in accordancewith what God has revealed--they are the iniquitous" (v.47). (Allthese verses) were revealed in connection with the nonbelievers.
A man from Banu Nabit (one of the Ansar tribes) came to theProphet (peace be upon him) and said: I testify that there is nogod except Allah and that thou art His bondsman and Messenger.Then he went forward and fought until he was killed. The Prophet(peace be upon him) said: He has done a little but shall be givena great reward.
Whenever Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) went to bed, hesaid: O Allah, it is with Thine Name that I live and it is withThine Name that I die." And when he got up he used to say:"Praise is due to Allah, Who gave us life after our death (sleep)and unto Thee is resurrection."
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: What is your opinionabout the delight of a person whose camel loaded with theprovisions of food and drink is lost and that moves about withits nose-string trailing upon the waterless desert in which thereis neither food nor drink, and he wanders about in search of thatuntil he is completely exhausted and then accidentally it happensto pass by the trunk of a tree and its nose-string gets entangledin that and he finds it entangled therein? We said (in responseto the question of the Prophet): Allah's Apostle (peace be uponhim) he would feel highly delighted. Thereupon Allah's Apostle(peace be upon him) said: By Allah, Allah is more delighted atthe repentance of His servant than that person (as he finds hislost) camel.
When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) alighted at the pool of Khumm, he took Ali by the hand and asked those present, "Do you not know that I am closer to the believers that they themselves?" They replied, "Certainly." He then asked, "Do you not know that I am nearer to every believer than he himself?" They replied, "Certainly." He then said, " Allah, he whose patron I am has Ali as his patron. O Allah, be friendly to those who are friendly to him and hostile to those who are hostile to him." After that Umar met him and said, "Congratulations, son of AbuTalib. Morning and evening you are the patron of every believing man and woman."

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) came to us accompaniedby Abbas when we were in open country belonging to us. He prayedin a desert with no sutrah in front of him, and a she-ass and abitch of ours were playing in front of him, but he paid noattention to that.
Al-Faji' came to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) andasked: Is not dead meat lawful for us? He said: What is yourfood? We said: Some food in the evening and some in the morning.AbuNu'aym said: Uqbah explained it to me saying: a cup (of milk)in the morning and a cup in the evening; this does not satisfythe hunger. So made the carrion lawful for them in thiscondition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "I command you to do five things: to maintain the community, to listen, to obey, to emigrate, and to fight in Allah's cause. He who secedes from the community as much as a span has cast off the tie of Islam from his neck unless he returns, and he who summons to what the pre-Islamic people believed belongs to the assemblies of Jahannam even if he fasts, prays, and asserts that he is a Muslim."

I came to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) when he was atMina, or at Arafat. He was surrounded by the people. When thebedouins came and saw his face, they would say: This is a blessedface. He said: He (the Prophet) appointed Dhat Irq as the placeof putting on ihram for the people of Iraq.
I embraced Islam while I had eight wives. So I mentioned it tothe Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him)said: Select four of them.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He whom death overtakes while he is engaged in acquiring knowledge with a view to reviving Islam with the help of it, there will be one degree between him and the Prophets in Paradise.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was asked about two people of Banu Israel: one of them was a scholar observing prescribed prayer, then sitting and teaching the people goodness; the second one observed fast by day and prayed during the night - which of them was superior. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The superiority of a scholar who observes the prescribed prayer and then sits down to teach people goodness over the worshipper who observes fast during the day and worships during the night, is like my superiority over the lowest in rank amongst you.

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) taught me some wordsthat I say during the witr. (The version of Ibn Jawwas has: I saythem in the supplication of the witr.) They were: "O Allah, guideme among those Thou hast guided, grant me security among thoseThou hast granted security, take me into Thy charge among thoseThou hast taken into Thy charge, bless me in what Thou hastgiven, guard me from the evil of what Thou hast decreed, for Thoudost decree, and nothing is decreed for Thee. He whom Thoubefriendest is not humbled. Blessed and Exalted art Thou, ourLord."
I have retained in my memory these words of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him), "Leave what causes you doubt and turn to what does not cause you doubt. Truth is tranquillity, but falsehood is doubt."
Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Nasa'i transmitted it, and Darimi transmitted the first part.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) as saying, "If any Muslim man or woman suffers a calamity and keeps it in his memory, even if it happened a long time ago, saying each time it is remembered, 'We belong to Allah and to Him do we return,' Allah, who is Blessed and Exalted will give a fresh reward each time it is said, equivalent to the reward when it happened."
Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.
Talhah ibn al-Bara' fell ill and the Prophet (peace be upon him)came to pay him a sick-visit. He said: I think Talhah has died;so tell me (about his death), and make haste, for it is notadvisable that the corpse of a Muslim should remain withheldamong his family.
We alighted with the Prophet (peace be upon him) at Khaybar, andhe had his companions with him. The chief of Khaybar was adefiant and abominable man. He came to the Prophet (peace beupon him) and said: Is it proper for you, Muhammad, that youslaughter our donkeys, eat our fruit, and beat our women? TheProphet (peace be upon him) became angry and said: Ibn Awf, rideyour horse, and call loudly: Beware, Paradise is lawful only fora believer, and that they (the people) should gather for prayer. They gathered and the Prophet (peace be upon him) led them inprayer, stood up and said: Does any of you, while reclining onhis couch, imagine that Allah has prohibited only that which isto be found in this Qur'an? By Allah, I have preached, commandedand prohibited various matters as numerous as that which is foundin the Qur'an, or more numerous. Allah has not permitted you toenter the houses of the people of the Book without permission, orbeat their women, or eat their fruits when they give you thatwhich is imposed on them.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) invited me to a mealshortly before dawn in Ramadan saying: Come to the blessedmorning meal.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, The martyrs and those who die in their beds will apply to our Lord, who is Great and Glorious, for a decision regarding those who die of plague. The martyrs will say, "Our brethren were killed just as we were;" and those who died a natural death will say, "Our brethren died in their beds just as we died." Our Lord will reply, "Look at their wounds, for if their wounds resemble those of people who have been killed they are of their number and will be associated with them, for their wounds have resembled theirs."
Ahmad and Nasa'i transmitted it.
On the day of Khaybar Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade every carnivorous beast which had a fang, every bird which had a claw, the flesh of domestic asses, the mujaththamah, the khalisah, and sexual intercourse with pregnant women till they gave birth to a child. Muhammad ibn Yahya said that AbuAsim was asked about the mujaththamah and said it meant a bird or something else set up and shot at. He was asked about the khalisah and said it was an animal taken from a wolf or a beast of prey by a man who had caught with on it, but which had died in his hand before he could slaughter it.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who leaves the Fridayprayer (continuously) for three Friday on account of slackness,Allah will print a stamp on his heart.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A Muslim's lost property is a cause of the flame of Hell."
Darimi transmitted it.
I was working in the market. A woman passed carrying a child. Thepeople rushed towards her, and I also rushed along with them. Ithen went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was asking:Who is the father of this (child) who is with you? She remainedsilent. A young man by her side said: I am his father, Apostleof Allah! He then turned towards her and asked: Who is thefather of this child with you?The young man said: I am hisfather, Apostle of Allah! The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) then looked at some of those who were around him and askedthem about him. They said: We only know good (about him). TheProphet (peace be upon him) said to him: Are you married? Hesaid: Yes. So he gave orders regarding him and he was stoned todeath.He (the narrator) said: We took him out, dug a pit forhim and put him in it. We then threw stones at him until he died.A man then came asking about the man who was stoned. We broughthim to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: This man hascome asking about the wicked man. The Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) said: He is more agreeable than the fragrance of muskin the eyes of Allah. The man was his father. We then helped himin washing, shrouding and burying him. (The narrator said:) I donot know whether he said or did not say "in praying over him."This is the tradition of Abdah, and it is more accurate.
