I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and I had long hair. When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) saw me, he said:Evil, evil! He said: I then returned and cut them off. I thencame to him in the morning. He said (to me): I did not intend todo evil to you. This is much better.
Tariq ibn Suwayd al-Ju'fi asked Allah's Apostle (peace be uponhim) about liquor. He forbade (its use) and he expressed hatredthat it should be prepared. He (Tariq) said: I prepare it as amedicine, whereupon he (the Prophet) said: It is no medicine, butan ailment.
I offered prayer along with the Prophet (peace be upon him). Hewould give the salutation to his right side (saying): Peace beupon you and mercy of Allah; and to his left side (saying): Peacebe upon you and mercy of Allah.
I said that I should look at the prayer of the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) how he prays. The Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) stood up and faced the qiblah (i.e. the direction ofKa'bah) and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great); then heraised his hands till he brought them in front of his ears; thenhe caught hold of his left hand with his right hand (i.e. foldedhis hands). When he was about to bow, he raised them (his hands)in a like manner. Then he sat, stretched out his left foot (tosit on it), placed his left hand on his left thigh, and kept awaythe tip of his right elbow from his right thigh, joined twofingers, formed a ring, to do so. And the narrator Bishr made aring with the thumb and the middle finger.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) recited the verse"Nor of those who go astray" (Surah al-Fatihah, verse 7), hewould say Amin; and raised his voice (while uttering this word).
I saw that the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed his knees (onthe ground) before placing his hands when he prostrated himself. And when he stood up, he raised his hands before his knees.
I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) raising his thumbsin prayer up to the lobes of his ears.
I witnessed the Prophet (peace be upon him) raise his hands infront of his ears when he began to pray. I then came back and sawthem (the people) raising their hands up to their chest when theybegan to pray. They wore long caps and blankets.
I purposely looked at the prayer of the Apostle of Allah (peacebe upon him), how he offered it. The Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) stood up, faced the direction of the qiblah and utteredthe takbir (Allah is most great) and then raised his hands infront of his ears, then placed his right hand on his left(catching each other). When he was about to bow, he raised themin the same manner. He then placed his hands on his knees. Whenhe raised his head after bowing, he raised them in the likemanner. When he prostrated himself he placed his forehead betweenhis hands. He then sat down and spread his left foot and placedhis left hand on his left thigh, and kept his right elbow alooffrom his right thigh. He closed his two fingers and made acircle (with the fingers). I (Asim ibn Kulayb) saw him (Bishribn al-Mufaddal) say in this manner. Bishr made the circle withthe thumb and the middle finger and pointed with the forefinger.
When a woman went out in the time of the Prophet (peace be uponhim) for prayer, a man attacked her and overpowered (raped) her. She shouted and he went off, and when a man came by, she said:That (man) did such and such to me. And when a company of theEmigrants came by, she said: That man did such and such to me.They went and seized the man whom they thought had hadintercourse with her and brought him to her. She said: Yes, thisis he. Then they brought him to the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him). When he (the Prophet) was about to pass sentence, theman who (actually) had assaulted her stood up and said: Apostleof Allah, I am the man who did it to her. He (the Prophet) saidto her: Go away, for Allah has forgiven you. But he told the mansome good words (AbuDawud said: meaning the man who was seized),and of the man who had had intercourse with her, he said: Stonehim to death. He also said: He has repented to such an extentthat if the people of Medina had repented similarly, it wouldhave been accepted from them.
I was with the Prophet (peace be upon him) when a man who was amurderer and had a strap round his neck was brought to him. Hethen called the legal guardian of the victim and asked him: Doyou forgive him? He said: No.He asked: Will you accept theblood-money? He said: No. He asked: Will you kill him? Hesaid: Yes. He said: Take him. When he turned his back, he said:Do you forgive him? He said: No. He said: Will you accept theblood-money? He said: No. He said: Will you kill him? He said:Yes. He said: Take him. After repeating all this a fourth time,he said: If you forgive him, he will bear the burden of his ownsin and the sin of the victim. He then forgave him. He (thenarrator) said: I saw him pulling the strap.
Alqamah ibn Wa'il reported his father as saying that the Prophet (peace be upon him) assigned him land in Hadramawt, sending Mu'awiyah with him and telling him to give it to him.
Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it.
When a woman was forced against her will in the time of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) he avoided punishing her but inflicted it on the one who had molested her. The transmitter did not mention that he had appointed a dower to be paid to her.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Wa'il saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) raising hishands at the time of beginning the prayer and reciting takbir, and according to Hammam (the narrator), the hands were liftedopposite to ears. He (the Prophet) then wrapped his hands in hiscloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when hewas about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then lifted them, and then recited takbir and bowed down, andwhen (he came back to the erect position) he recited: Allahlistened to him who praised Him." And when prostrated, heprostrated between the two palms.
While I was sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle (peace beupon him), a person came there dragging another one with the helpof a strap and said: Allah's Messenger, this man has killed mybrother. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to him: Didyou kill him? And the other man said: (In case he did not make aconfession of this, I shall bring a witness against him). He(the murderer) said: Yes, I killed him. He (the Holy Prophet)said: Why did you kill him? He said: He and I were striking downthe leaves of a tree and he abused me and enraged me, so I struckhis head with an axe and killed him. Thereupon Allah's Messenger(peace be upon him) said: Have you anything with you to payblood-money on your behalf? He said: I do not possess anyproperty but this robe of mine and this axe of mine. He (theHoly Prophet) said: Do you think your people will pay ransom foryou? He said: I am more insignificant among my people than this(that I would not be able to obtain this benefit from my tribe). He (the Holy Prophet) threw the strap towards him (the claimantof the blood-money) saying: Take away your man. The man took himaway, and as he returned, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)said: If he kills him, he will be like him. He returned andsaid: Allah's Messenger, it has reached me that you said that "Ifhe killed him, he would be like him." I caught hold of himaccording to your command. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace beupon him) said: Don't you want him to take upon himself (theburden) of your sin and the sin of your companion (your brother)? He said: Allah's Apostle, why not? The Messenger of Allah (peacebe upon him) said: If it is so, then let it be. He threw away thestrap (around the offender) and set him free.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Do not say al-Karm (forthe word vine) but say al-habalah (that is grape).

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Have you come to ask about righteousness and sin, Wabisah?" When he replied that he had, he joined his fingers and striking his breast with them said, "Ask yourself for a decision, ask your heart for a decision" (saying it three times). "Righteousness is that with which the soul is tranquil and the heart is tranquil, but sin is that which rouses suspicion in the soul and is perplexing in the breast, even if people give you a decision in its favour."
Ahmad and Darimi transmitted it.
I asked Ibn 'Umar, "When should I do the Rami of the Jimar?" He replied, "When your leader does that." I asked him again the same question. He replied, "We used to wait till the sun declined and then we would do the Rami (i.e. on the 11th and 12th of Dhul-Hijja)."
Jabir bin Abdullah said, "Allah's Apostle sent troops to the sea coast and appointed Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah as their commander, and they were 300 (men). We set out, and we had covered some distance on the way, when our journey food ran short. So Abu 'Ubaida ordered that all the food present with the troops be collected, and it was collected. Our journey food was dates, and Abu Ubaida kept on giving us our daily ration from it little by little (piecemeal) till it decreased to such an extent that we did not receive except a date each." I asked (Jabir), "How could one date benefit you?" He said, "We came to know its value when even that finished." Jabir added, "Then we reached the sea (coast) where we found a fish like a small mountain. The people (i.e. troops) ate of it for 18 nights (i.e. days). Then Abu 'Ubaida ordered that two of its ribs be fixed on the ground (in the form of an arch) and that a she-camel be ridden and passed under them. So it passed under them without touching them."
I saw the Prophet and saw some white hair below his lower lip above the chin.
Jabir bin Abdullah said, "We set out, and we were three-hundred men carrying our journey-food on our shoulders. Then we began to eat a single date each per day." A man asked (Jabir), "O Abu Abdullah! How could a person be satisfied with a single date?" Jabir replied, "We realized the value of that one date when we could not even have that much till we reached the sea-shore, when all of a sudden we saw a huge fish cast by the sea. So, we ate of it as much as we wished for eighteen days."
The People of Sham taunted 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair by calling him "The son of Dhatin-Nataqain" (the woman who has two waist-belts). (His mother) (Asma, said to him, "O my son! They taunt you with 'Nataqain.' Do you know what the Nataqain were? That was my waist-belt which I divided in two parts. I tied the water skin of Allah's Apostle with one part, and with the other part I tied his food container."
A meal was brought to Allah's Apostle while his step-son, 'Umar bin Abi Salama was with him. Allah's Apostle said to him, "Mention the Name of Allah and eat of the dish what is nearer to you."
The Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Apostleof Allah (peace be upon him) we eat but we are not satisfied. Hesaid: Perhaps you eat separately. They replied: Yes. He said: Ifyou gather together at your food and mention Allah's name, youwill be blessed in it.
The companions of Allah's Messenger said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we eat but are not satisfied." He suggested that they ate separately, and when they replied that that was so he said, "If you gather together at your food and mention Allah's name you will be blessed for it."
AbuDawud transmitted it.
(the clerk of Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba): Once Al-Mughira dictated to me in a letter addressed to Muawiya that the Prophet used to say after every compulsory prayer, "La ilaha ilallah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa-lahul-hamdu, wahuwa ala kulli shai in qadir. Allahumma la mani 'a lima a'taita, wa la mu'tiya lima mana'ta, wa la yanfa'u dhal-jaddi minka-l-jadd. (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and He has no partner in Lordship or in worship or in the Names and the Qualities, and for Him is the Kingdom and all the praises are for Him and He is omnipotent. O Allah! Nobody can hold back what you give and nobody can give what You hold back. Hard (efforts by anyone for anything cannot benefit one against Your Will)." And Al-Hasan said, "Al-jadd' means prosperity."
(the freed slave of Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba) Al-Mughira wrote to Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan that Allah's Apostle used to say at the end of every prayer after the Taslim, "La ilaha illa-l-lahu wahdahu la sharika lahu; lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd, wahuwa 'ala kulli shai'n qadir. Allahumma la mani'a Lima a taita, wa la mu'ta Lima mana'ta, wa la yanfa'u dhal-jaddu minkal-jadd."
(the clerk of Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba) Muawiya wrote to Al-Mughira: "Write to me a narration you have heard from Allah's Apostle." So Al-Mughira wrote to him, "I heard him saying the following after each prayer: 'La ilaha illal-lahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu-l-mulk wa lahuI-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli Shai-in qadir.' He also used to forbid idle talk, asking too many questions (in religion), wasting money, preventing what should be given, and asking others for something (except in great need), being undutiful to mothers, and burying one's little daughters (alive)."
(the freed slave of Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba) Muawiya wrote to Mughira, "Write to me what you heard the Prophet saying after his prayer." So Al-Mughira dictated to me and said, "I heard the Prophet saying after the prayer, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone Who has no partner. O Allah! No one can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and the fortune of a man of means is useless before You (i.e., only good deeds are of value).' "
(The clerk of Al-Mughira) Muawiya wrote to Al-Mughira: "Write to me what you have heard from Allah's Apostle." So he (Al-Mughira) wrote to him: Allah's Prophet used to say at the end of each prayer: "La ilaha illalla-h wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul Mulku, wa lahul Hamdu wa hula ala kulli shai'in qadir. 'Allahumma la mani' a lima a'taita, wala mu'tiya lima mana'ta, wala yanfa'u dhuljadd minkal-jadd." He also wrote to him that the Prophet used to forbid (1) Qil and Qal (idle useless talk or that you talk too much about others), (2) Asking too many questions (in disputed religious matters); (3) And wasting one's wealth by extravagance; (4) and to be undutiful to one's mother (5) and to bury the daughters alive (6) and to prevent your favors (benevolence) to others (i.e. not to pay the rights of others) (7) And asking others for something (except when it is unavoidable).

He said: So go on journey with Allah's blessing.I then proceeded along with my best companion and Allah gave usbooty. Some she-camels were given to me as my share of booty. Idrove them till I reached him. He came out and sat on the rearpart of the saddle of his camel. He then said: Drive thembackward. He again said: Drive them forward. He then said: I findyour she-camels very gentle. He said: This is your booty which Istipulated for you. He replied: Take your she-camels, my nephew;we did not intend (to get) your portion.
Al-Arif ibn ad-Daylami said: We went to Wathilah ibn al-Asqa andsaid to him: Tell us a tradition which has not addition oromission. We said: All we mean is a tradition youhave heard from the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him). Hesaid: We went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) about a friendof ours who deserved. Hell for murder. He said: Emancipate aslave on his behalf; Allah will set free from Hell a member ofthe body for every member of his.

There was a mark of bloodon it (saddle) and that was the first menstruation that I had. Istuck to the camel and felt ashamed. When the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) saw what had happened to me and saw theblood, he said: Perhaps you are menstruating. I said: Yes.
