Who was one of the men of the tribe of Bani Salim: Allah's Apostle came to me and said, "If anybody comes on the Day of Resurrection who has said: La ilaha illal-lah, sincerely, with the intention to win Allah's Pleasure, Allah will make the Hell-Fire forbidden for him."
(the son of Muhib) An Egyptian who came and performed the Hajj to the Kaba saw some people sitting. He enquired, "Who are these people?" Somebody said, "They are the tribe of Quraish." He said, "Who is the old man sitting amongst them?" The people replied, "He is 'Abdullah bin 'Umar." He said, "O Ibn Umar! I want to ask you about something; please tell me about it. Do you know that 'Uthman fled away on the day (of the battle) of Uhud?" Ibn 'Umar said, "Yes." The (Egyptian) man said, "Do you know that 'Uthman was absent on the day (of the battle) of Badr and did not join it?" Ibn 'Umar said, "Yes." The man said, "Do you know that he failed to attend the Ar Ridwan pledge and did not witness it (i.e. Hudaibiya pledge of allegiance)?" Ibn 'Umar said, "Yes." The man said, "Allahu Akbar!" Ibn 'Umar said, "Let me explain to you (all these three things). As for his flight on the day of Uhud, I testify that Allah has excused him and forgiven him; and as for his absence from the battle of Badr, it was due to the fact that the daughter of Allah's Apostle was his wife and she was sick then. Allah's Apostle said to him, "You will receive the same reward and share (of the booty) as anyone of those who participated in the battle of Badr (if you stay with her).' As for his absence from the Ar-Ridwan pledge of allegiance, had there been any person in Mecca more respectable than 'Uthman (to be sent as a representative), Allah's Apostle would have sent him instead of him. No doubt, Allah's Apostle had sent him, and the incident of the Ar-Ridwan pledge of Allegiance happened after 'Uthman had gone to Mecca. Allah's Apostle held out his right hand saying, 'This is 'Uthman's hand.' He stroked his (other) hand with it saying, 'This (pledge of allegiance) is on the behalf of 'Uthman.' Then Ibn 'Umar said to the man, 'Bear (these) excuses in mind with you.'
The Prophet said, "The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."
Al-Aslamiyyah said: I said to Uthman ibn Talhah al-Hajabi): Whatdid the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say to you when hecalled you? He said: (The Prophet said:) I forgot to order you tocover the two horns (of the lamb), for it is not advisable thatthere should be anything in the House (the Ka'bah) which divertsthe attention of the man at prayer. Ibn as-Sarh said: The name ofmy maternal uncle is Musafi' ibn Shaybah.

A man came to perform the Hajj to (Allah's) House. Seeing some people sitting, he said, "Who are these sitting people?" Somebody said, "They are the people of Quraish." He said, "Who is the old man?" They said, "Ibn 'Umar." He went to him and said, "I want to ask you about something; will you tell me about it? I ask you with the respect due to the sanctity of this (Sacred) House, do you know that 'Uthman bin 'Affan fled on the day of Uhud?" Ibn 'Umar said, "Yes." He said, "Do you know that he (i.e. 'Uthman) was absent from the Badr (battle) and did not join it?" Ibn 'Umar said, "Yes." He said, "Do you know that he failed to be present at the Ridwan Pledge of allegiance (i.e. pledge of allegiance at Hudaibiya) and did not witness it?" Ibn 'Umar replied, "Yes," He then said, "Allahu-Akbar!" Ibn 'Umar said, "Come along; I will inform you and explain to you what you have asked. As for the flight (of 'Uthman) on the day of Uhud, I testify that Allah forgave him. As regards his absence from the Badr (battle), he was married to the daughter of Allah's Apostle and she was ill, so the Prophet said to him, 'You will have such reward as a man who has fought the Badr battle will get, and will also have the same share of the booty.' As for his absence from the Ridwan pledge of allegiance if there had been anybody more respected by the Meccans than 'Uthman bin 'Affan, the Prophet would surely have sent that man instead of 'Uthman. So the Prophet sent him (i.e. 'Uthman to Mecca) and the Ridwan Pledge of allegiance took place after 'Uthman had gone to Mecca. The Prophet raised his right hand saying. 'This is the hand of 'Uthman,' and clapped it over his other hand and said, "This is for 'Uthman.'" Ibn 'Umar then said (to the man), "Go now, after taking this information."

He thensaid: Act as an Imam for your people. Then a Roman slave of my people, called Yuhannah, incited her, and spoke to her in his own unintelligible language. She gave birth to a son like a chameleon (red). I asked her:What is this? Uthman thenentered it. He came out to us, looking pale. He said: They arethreatening to kill me now. We said: Allah will be sufficientfor you against them, Commander of the Faithful! He asked: Whykill me? I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Itis not lawful to kill a man who is a Muslim except for one of thethree reasons: Kufr (disbelief) after accepting Islam, fornication after marriage, or wrongfully killing someone, forwhich he may be killed. I swear by Allah, I have not committedfornication before or after the coming of Islam, nor did I everwant another religion for me instead of my religion since Allahgave guidance to me, nor have I killed anyone. So for what reasondo you want to kill me?
Aban ibn Uthman said: I heard Uthman ibn Affan (his father) say:I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If anyonesays three times: "In the name of Allah, when Whose name ismentioned nothing on Earth or in Heaven can cause harm, and He isthe Hearer, the Knower" he will not suffer sudden affliction tillthe morning, and if anyone says this in the morning, he will notsuffer sudden affliction till the evening. Then both of them came and offered me salutation and AbuBakr said: What prompted you to ignore the salutation of your brother, Umar. I said: I never did that. Umar said: By Allah, of course you did that. I said: By Allah I did not perceive that you passed by me and paid salutation. AbuBakr said: Uthman is speaking the truth and something must have absorbed your mind (that you did not take notice of this matter). I said: Yes it is so. He said: What is that? I said: Allah has taken away His Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) before we asked him how we could free ourselves from the snares of the world and the devil. AbuBakr said: I did ask about that. So I got near to him and said to him: May my father and mother be taken as ransom for you and you were the worthiest to ask. Thereupon AbuBakr said: I said to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him), how one could free oneself from the snares of the world and devil. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who accepted from me the word that I presented to my uncle which he rejected is the freedom (from them) (Affirmation of the oneness of Allah and the Apostlehood of Muhammad).

It was said to him: You do not weep over the discussion of Paradise and Hell, but you weep over it (grave). Whereupon he said that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) had said: Verily the grave is the first step in the stages of the Hereafter; if one finds salvation (at this stage) the succeeding (stages) become easy for him, and if he does not find salvation in it, what follows this stage is very hard upon him. Uthman replied: Whenthe verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Prophet (peace beupon him), he called someone to write them down for him and saidto him: Put this verse in the surah in which such and such hasbeen mentioned; and when one or two verses were revealed, he usedto say similarly (regarding them). (Surah) al-Anfal is the firstsurah that was revealed at Medina, and (Surah) al-Bara'ah wasrevealed last in the Qur'an, and its contents were similar tothose of al-Anfal. I, therefore, thought that it was a part ofal-Anfal. Hence I put them in the category of as-sab'u at-tiwal(the seven lengthy surahs), and I did not write "In the name ofAllah, the Compassionate, the Merciful" between them.
