AbdurRahman ibn Ka'b told on his father's authority that when death came to Ka'b, Umm Bishr, daughter of al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur, visited him and said, "AbuAbdurRahman, if you meet so and so, give him a greeting from me." He replied, "Allah forgive you, Umm Bishr, I shall be too occupied to do that." She said, "AbuAbdurRahman, have you not heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say that the souls of believers are in green birds which are suspended on and feed on the trees of Paradise?" On his replying that he had, she said that that was what she meant.
Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in Kitab al-Ba'th wan-Nushur, transmitted it.
She took the oath of allegiance to the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) and said to him: Apostle of Allah, a poor man standsat my door, but I find nothing to give him. The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) said to her: If you do not find anything togive him, put something in his hand, even though it should be aburnt hoof.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked: Which of theactions is best? He replied: Observing prayer early in itsperiod. Al-Khuza'i narrated in his version from his aunt namedUmm Farwah who took the oath of allegiance to the Prophet (peacebe upon him): He was questioned.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The angels do not go with atravelling company in which there is a bell.
Urwah reported on the authority of Umm Habibah that she wasmarried to Abdullah ibn Jahsh who died in Abyssinia, so the Negusmarried her to the Prophet (peace be upon him) giving her on hisbehalf a dower of four thousand (dirhams). He sent her to theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) with Shurahbil ibn Hasanah.AbuDawud said: Hasanah is his mother.
Ibn Az-Zubayr reported on the authority of Umm Habibah that shewas the wife of Ibn Jahsh, but he died, He was among those whomigrated to Abyssinia. Negus then married her to the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone keeps on prayingregularly four rak'ahs before and four after the noon prayer, hewill not enter the Hell-fire.
Mu'awiyah ibn AbuSufyan asked his sister Umm Habibah, the wife ofthe Prophet (peace be upon him): Would the apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) pray in the clothe in which he had anintercourse? She said: Yes, when he would not see any impurity init.
AbuSufyan ibn Sa'id ibn al-Mughirah reported that he entered uponUmm Habibah who presented him a glass of sawiq (a drink preparedwith flour and water) to drink. He called for water and rinsedhis mouth. She said: O my cousin, don't you perform ablution? TheProphet (peace be upon him) said: Perform ablution after eatinganything cooked with fire, or he said: anything touched by fire.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Everything a son of Adam says counts against him and not in his favour, except recommending what is good, prohibiting what is objectionable, or making mention of Allah."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: A house will be builtin Paradise for anyone who prays in a day a night twelve rak'ahs;and she added: I have never abandoned (observing them) since Iheard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) Some ofthe other narrators said the same words: I have never abandoned(observing them) since I heard (from so and so).
Ibn Shawwal (the freed slave of Umm Habibah) reported that hewent to Umm Habibah (the Wife of Allah's Apostle) who informedhim that Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) sent her fromMuzdalifah during the night.
Az-Zuhri said: The Negus married Umm Habibah daughter ofAbuSufyan to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) for a dowerof four thousand dirhams. He wrote it to the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) who accepted it.
Ikrimah said: Umm Habibah daughter of Jahsh had a prolonged flowof blood. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded her torefrain (from prayer) during her menstrual period; then sheshould wash and pray, if she sees anything (which rendersablution void) she should perform ablution and pray.
On the days of the conquest of Mecca, when Mecca was captured,Fatimah came and sat on the left side of the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him), and Umm Hani was on his right side. Aslave-girl brought a vessel which contained some drink; she gaveit to him and he drank of it. He then gave it to Umm Hani whodrank of it. She said: Apostle of Allah, I have broken my fast; Iwas fasting. He said to her: Were you making atonement forsomething? She replied: No. He said: Then it does not harm you ifit was voluntary (fast).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to Mecca and he had fourplaits of hair.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and Maymunah took a bath from a bowl wherein there was the trace of dough-paste.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) came in to visit me and asked whether I had anything. When I replied that I had nothing but some dry bread and vinegar he said, "Produce it; a house in which there is vinegar is not devoid of condiments."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed on the day of theConquest (of Mecca) eight rak'ahs saluting after every tworak'ahs.
I memorised (surah 50) "Qaf. By the Glorious Qur'an" from themouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on Friday forhe recited it on the pulpit on every Friday.
The aforesaid tradition (No 1963) has also been transmitted byYazid ibn AbuZiyad with a different chain of narrators. Thisversion adds the words: He (the Prophet) did not stand near it(the jamrah).
I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) near the Jamratal-Aqabah (the third or last pillar) riding (on a camel) and Isaw a pebble between his fingers. He threw the pebbles and thepeople also threw (stones at the Jamrah).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who forged in order toput things right between two persons did not lie. The version byAhmad ibn Muhammad and Musaddad has: The liar is not the one whoputs things right between people, saying what is good andincreasing good.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Two sheep whichresemble each other are to be sacrificed for a boy and one for agirl.
I heard the Prophet (nay peace be upon him) say: Let the birdsstay in their roosts. She said: I also heard him say: Two sheepare to be sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl, but it doesyou no harm whether they are male or female.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Tworesembling sheep are to be sacrificed for a boy and one for agirl. AbuDawud said: I heard Ahmad (ibn Hanbal) say: The Arabicword mukafi'atani means equal (in age) or resembling each other.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) performed theFarewell Pilgrimage, and we had a camel, AbuMa'qil dedicated itto the cause of Allah. Then we suffered from a disease, andAbuMa'qil died. The Prophet (peace be upon him) went out (forhajj). When he finished the hajj, I came to him. He said (tome): Umm Ma'qil, what prevented you from coming out for hajjalong with us?She said: We resolved (to do so), but AbuMa'qildied. We had a camel on which we could perform hajj, butAbuMa'qil had bequeathed it to the cause of Allah. He said: Whydid you not go out (for hajj) upon it, for hajj is in the causeof Allah? If you miss this hajj along with us, perform umrahduring Ramadan, for it is like hajj. She used to say: hajj ishajj, and umrah is umrah. The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) said it to me: I do not know whether it was peculiar to me.
AbuBakr ibn AbdurRahman said: The messenger of Marwan whom hesent to Umm Ma'qil reported to me. She said: AbuMa'qilaccompanied the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) during hajj.When he came (to her) she said: You know that hajj is incumbenton me. They walked until they visited him (i.e. the Prophet) andshe asked (him): Apostle of Allah, hajj is due from me, andAbuMa'qil has a camel.AbuMa'qil said: She spoke the truth, Ihave dedicated it to the cause of Allah. The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) said: Give it to her, that is in the cause ofAllah. So he gave the camel to her. She then said: Apostle ofAllah, I am a woman who has become aged and ill. Is there anyaction which would be sufficient for me as my hajj? He replied:umrah performed during Ramadan is sufficient as hajj.
When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) mentioned civil strife and its nearness, she asked him who would be the best of the people during it and he replied, "A man with his cattle who pays the zakat due on them and worships his Lord, and a man who holds his horse's head and causes fear to the enemy while they are causing him fear."

Umm Mubashshir said to the Prophet (peace be upon him) during thesickness of which he died: What do you think about your illness,Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)? I do not think about theillness of my son except the poisoned sheep of which he had eatenwith you at Khaybar. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: And Ido not think about my illness except that. This is the time whenit cut off my aorta.
Umm Mubashshir heard Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) assaying in presence of Hafsah: God willing, the people of the Treewould never enter the Fire of Hell - one amongst those who owedallegiance under that. She said: Allah's Messenger, why not? Hescolded her. Hafsah said: "And there is none amongst you butshall have to pass over that (narrow Bridge)" (19:71). ThereuponAllah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted andGlorious, has said: "We would rescue those persons who areGod-conscious and we would leave the tyrants to their fate there"(19:72).
Hilal ibn Yasaf said: I came to ar-Raqqah (a place in Syria). Oneof my companions said to me: Do you want to see any of theCompanions of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? I said: A goodopportunity. So we went to Wabisah. I said to my friend: Let usfirst see his mode of living. He had a cap with two ears stuck(to his head), and wearing a brown silken robe. He was resting ona staff during prayer. We asked him (about resting on the staff)after salutation; He said: Umm Qays daughter of Mihsan said to methat when the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) became agedand the flesh grew increasingly on him, he took a prop at hisplace of prayer and rested on it.
I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the blood ofmenstruation on the clothe. He said: Erase it off with a piece ofwood and then wash it away with water and the leaves of thelote-tree.
Umm Salamah said: Allah's Messenger, you necessarily develop trouble every year because of the eating of the poisoned (meat) of sheep. He said: Nothing befalls me but that which was destined for me while Adam was still a lump of clay.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If a woman dies while her husband was pleased with her, she will enter Paradise.

I offered roasted meat to the Prophet (may peace be upon him), he ate it and then got up for prayer without performing ablution.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to have sexual intercourse, and then go to sleep. He would then wake up, and then again go to sleep.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to observe the noon prayer quite earlier than you do; whereas you observe the afternoon prayer quite earlier than him.

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) noticed that when a slave of ours, called Aflah, was prostrating, he used to blow off (dust from the place of prostration). Thereupon he (the Prophet) said: Aflah! Besmear your face with dust.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to observe two rak'ahs after the Witr.
Transmitted by Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, the latter reported an addition: Two light rak'ahs in the state of sitting.
Shahr ibn Hawshab said: I asked Umm Salamah (Mother of the faithful), what was the supplication most often made by the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he was in your house? She said: His supplication most often was: Controller of hearts, make firm my heart in Thy faith.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to fast on Saturdays and Sundays more than on other days, and he used to say, "They are days of festival for the polytheists, and I like to act contrary to them."
Ahmad transmitted it.
Ibn Jurayj quoted Ibn AbuMulaykah who reported Umm Salamah as saying, 'Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to make pauses in his recitation. He would say, 'Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe'. then stop. He would next say, 'The Compassionate, the Merciful', then stop."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, but he said that its isnad is not fully connected, because al-Layth transmitted this tradition from Ibn AbuMulaykah from Ya'la ibn Mamlak from Umm Salamah, and al-Layth's tradition is sounder.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) went out of his house he said, "In the name of Allah; O Allah, we seek refuge in Thee from slipping, or straying, or causing injustice, or suffering injustice, or doing wrong, or having wrong done to us."
Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Nasa'i transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan sahih tradition.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say after the dawn prayer, "O Allah, I ask Thee for beneficial knowledge, acceptable action, and good provision."
Ahmad, Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in [Kitab] ad-Da'wah al-Kabir, transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The only suckling which makes marriage unlawful is that which is taken from the breast and enters the bowels, and is taken before the time of weaning."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Any woman who dies when her husband is pleased with her will enter paradise."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A hypocrite does not love Ali and a believer does not hate him."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan tradition whose isnad is gharib.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who reviles Ali has reviled me."
Ahmad transmitted it.
Umm Salamah heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say to his wives, "He who treats you generously after I am gone is the sincere and kindly one. O Allah, give AbdurRahman ibn Awf drink from Salsabil in Paradise."
Ahmad transmitted it.
Salma said, "I went to visit Umm Salamah and found her weeping. I asked her what was making her weep and she replied that she had seen Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) (meaning in a dream) with dust on his head and beard. She asked him what was the matter and he replied, `I have just been present at the slaying of al-Husayn.'"
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
In the year of the Conquest Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) called Fatimah and spoke privately to her and she wept; he then spoke to her and she laughed. When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) died she asked her about her weeping and her laughing and she replied, "Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) informed me that he was going to die, so I wept; he then informed me that, with the exception of Mary, daughter of Imran, I should be the chief lady among the inhabitants of Paradise, so I laughed."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
I said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has closely plaitedhair on my head; should I undo it for taking a bath, because ofsexual intercourse? He (the Prophet) said: No, it is enough foryou to throw three handfuls of water on your head and then pourwater over yourself, and you shall be purified.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: If any Muslim whosuffers some calamity says that which Allah has commanded him:"We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return: O Allah, rewardme for my affliction and give me something better in exchange forit", Allah will give him something better than it in exchange. When AbuSalamah died she said: What Muslim is better thanAbuSalamah whose family was the first to emigrate to theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? I then said the words,and Allah gave me God's Messenger (peace be upon him) inexchange. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)sent Hatib ibn AbuBalta'ah to deliver to me the message proposingmarriage with him. I said to him: I have a daughter (as mydependant) and I am of jealous temperament. He (the Holy Prophet)said: So far as her daughter is concerned, we shall supplicateAllah, to free her (of her responsibility) and I shall alsosupplicate Allah to do away with (her) jealous (temperament).
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Whenever you visitthe sick or the dead, supplicate for good because angels say"Amen" to whatever you say. She added: When AbuSalamah died, Iwent to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and said:Messenger of Allah, AbuSalamah has died. He told me to recite: "OAllah! forgive me and him (AbuSalamah) and give me a bettersubstitute than he." So I said (this), and Allah gave me inexchange Muhammad, who is better for me than him (AbuSalamah).
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to AbuSalamah (ashe died). His eyes were fixedly open. He closed them, and thensaid: When the soul is taken away the sight follows it. Some ofthe people of his family wept and wailed. So he said: Do notsupplicate for yourselves anything but good, for angels say"Amen" to what you say. He then said: O Allah, forgiveAbuSalamah, raise his degree among those who are rightly guided,grant him a successor in his descendants who remain. Forgive usand him, O Lord of the Universe, and make his grave spacious, andgrant him light in it.
When AbuSalamah died I said: I am a stranger in a strange land, Ishall weep for him in a manner that would be talked of. I madepreparation for weeping for him when a woman from the upper sideof the city came there who intended to help me (in weeping). Shehappened to come across the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) and he said: Do you intend to bring the devil into a housefrom which Allah has twice driven him out? I (Umm Salamah),therefore, refrained from weeping and I did not weep.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) took an oath that hewould not go to some of his wives for the whole of the month.When twenty-nine days had passed he (the Prophet) went to them inthe morning or in the evening. Upon this it was said to him:Apostle of Allah, you took an oath that you would not come to usfor a month, whereupon he said: The month may also consist oftwenty-nine days.
AbuBakr ibn AbdurRahman reported that Marwan sent him to UmmSalamah to ask whether a person should observe fast who is in astate of junub and the dawn breaks upon him, whereupon she saidthat the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) (was at times)junbi on account of intercourse and not due to sexual dream, andthe dawn broke upon him, but he neither broke the fast norrecompensed.
Sulayman ibn Yasar reported that he asked Umm Salamah whether aperson (who gets up) in the morning in a state of junub shouldobserve fast. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) (at times) got up in the morning in a state of Junub, notbecause of sexual dream (but on account of intercourse at night),and then observed fast.
It was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): Is notthe daughter of Hamzah a suitable match for you? Or it was said:Why don't you propose to marry the daughter of Hamzah, the son ofAbdulMuttalib? Thereupon he said: Hamzah is my brother by reasonof fosterage.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: In the nearfuture there will be Amirs and you will like their good deeds anddislike their bad deeds. One who sees through their bad deeds(and tries to prevent their repetition by his hand or through hisspeech), is absolved from blame, but one who hates their baddeeds (in the heart of his heart, being unable to prevent theirrecurrence by his hand or his tongue), is (also) safe (so far asGod"s wrath is concerned). But one who approves of their baddeeds and imitates them is spiritually ruined. People asked (theProphet): Shouldn't we fight against them? He replied: No, aslong as they say their prayers.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When any one of youintending to sacrifice the animal enters in the month (ofDhul-Hijjah) he should not get his hair or nails touched (cut).It was said to Sufyan that some of the (scholars) did not deemthis hadith to be Marfu'. He said: But I deem it as Marfu' (i.e.chain of narration traceable right up to the Prophet).
I used to hear from people making a mention of the Cistern, but Idid not hear about it from Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him).One day while a girl was combing me I heard Allah's Messenger(peace be upon him) say:" O people," I said to that girl: Keepaway from me. She said: He (the Prophet) has addressed the menonly and he has not invited the attention of the women. I said: Iam amongst the people also (and have thus every right to listento the things pertaining to religion). Allah's Messenger (peacebe upon him) said: I shall be your harbinger on the Cistern;therefore, be cautious lest one of you should come (to me) andmay be driven away like a stray camel. I would ask the reasons,and it would be said to me: You don't know what innovations theymade after you. And I would then also say: Be away.
Harith ibn AbuRabi'ah and Abdullah ibn Safwan both went to UmmSalamah, Ummul Mu'minin. They asked her about the army whichwould be sunk in the earth. This was at the time of Abdullah ibnaz-Zubayr's rule. Umm Salamah said: Allah's Apostle (peace beupon him) had said that a seeker of refuge would seek refuge inthe Sacred House and an army would be sent to him (in order tokill him) and when it would enter a plain ground, it would bemade to sink. I said: Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) whatabout him who would be made to accompany this army willy-nilly ?Thereupon he said: He would be made to sink along with them buthe would be raised on the Day of Resurrection on the basis of hisintention. AbuJa'far said: This plain ground means the plainground of Medina.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: A band of rebels wouldkill Ammar.
Humayd ibn Nafi' reported the following three traditions on theauthority of Zaynab, daughter of AbuSalamah: Zaynab said: Ivisited Umm Habibah when her father AbuSufyan, died. She askedfor some yellow perfume containing saffron (khaluq) or somethingelse. Then she applied it to a girl and touched her cheeks. Shesaid: I have no need of perfume, but I heard the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) say: It is not lawful for a woman whobelieves in Allah and the Last Day to observe mourning for onewho has died, more than three nights, except for four months andten days in the case of a husband. Zaynab said: I also visitedZaynab, daughter of Jahsh, when her brother died. She asked forsome perfume and used it upon herself.She then said: I have noneed of perfume, but I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) say when he was on the pulpit: It is not lawful for a womanwho believes in Allah and the Last Day to observe mourning forone who has died, more than three nights, except for four monthsand ten days in the case of a husband.Zaynab said: I heard mymother, Umm Salamah, say: A woman came to the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) and said: Apostle of Allah, the husband of mydaughter has died, and she is suffering from sore eyes; may weput antimony in her eyes? The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) said: No. He said this twice or thrice. Each time he said:No. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The waitingperiod is now four months and ten days. In pre-Islamic days oneof you used to throw away a piece of dung at the end of a year. Humayd said: I asked Zaynab: What do you mean by throwing away apiece of dung at the end of a year. Zaynab replied: When thehusband of a woman died, she entered a small cell and put onshabby clothes, not touching perfume or any other thing until ayear passed. Then an animal such as donkey or sheep or bird wasprovided for her. She rubbed herself with it. The animal withwhich she rubbed herself rarely survived. She then came out andwas given a piece of dung which she threw away. She then usedperfume or something else which she desired.
