Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: There lived a kingbefore you and he had a (court) magician. As he (the magician)grew old, he said to the king: I have grown old, send some youngboy to me so that I may teach him magic. He (the king) sent tohim a young man so that he might train him (in magic). On his way(to the magician) he (the young man) found a monk sitting there. He (the young man) listened to his (the monk's) talk and wasimpressed by it. It became his habit that on his way to themagician he met the monk set there so he was late in coming tothe magician. He (the magician) beat him because of the delay. Hemade a complaint about it to the monk and he said to him: Whenyou feel afraid of the magician, say: Members of my familydetained me. And when you feel afraid of your family you shouldsay: The magician detained me. It so happened that there came ahuge beast (of prey) and it blocked the way of the people. He(the young boy) said: I shall find out today whether the magicianor the monk is superior. He picked up a stone and said: O Allah,if the affairs of the monk are dearer to Thee than the affairs ofthe magician, bring death to this animal so that the people willbe able to move about freely. He threw that stone towards it andkilled it and the people began to move about (on the pathfreely). He (the young man) then came to that monk and informedhim. The monk said: My son, today you are superior to me. Youraffairs have reached a stage where I find that you will be soonput to the test, and in case you are put to don't reveal myidentity. That young man began to treat the blind and thosesuffering from leprosy and he in fact began to cure people of(all kinds) of illness. When a companion of the king, who hadbecome blind heard, about him, he came to him with numerous giftsand said: If you cure me, all these things collected togetherhere will be yours. He said: I myself do not cure anyone; it isAllah Who cures. If you affirm faith in Allah, I shall alsosupplicate Allah to cure you. He affirmed his faith in Allah andAllah cured him. He came to the king and sat by his side as heused to sit before. The king said to him: Who restored youreyesight? He said: My Lord. Thereupon he said: It means thatyour Lord is One besides me. He said: My Lord and your Lord isAllah; so he (the king) took hold of him and tormented him untilhe revealed the identity of boy. The young man was thus summonedand the king said to him: O boy, it has been conveyed to me thatyou have become so proficient in your magic that you cure theblind and those suffering from leprosy and you do such and suchthings. Thereupon he said: I do not cure anyone; it is Allah Whocures. He (the king) took hold of him and began to torment him.So he revealed the identity of the monk. The monk was thussummoned and it was said to him: You should turn back from yourreligion. He, however, refused to do so. He (ordered) a saw to bebrought (and when it was done) he (the king) placed it in themiddle of his head and backed it until it fell apart. Then thecourtier of the king was brought and it was said to him: Turnback from your religion but he refused to do so. Therefore thesaw was placed in the middle of his head which was backed untilit fell apart. Then young boy was brought and it was said tohim: Turn back from your religion. He refused to do so and he washanded over to a group of his courtier. He said to them: Take himto such and such mountain; make him climb that mountain and whenyou reach its top (ask him to renounce his faith) but if herefuses to do so, then throw him (down the mountain). So theytook him and made him climb the mountain and he said: O Allah, save me from them (in any way) Thou likest. The mountain began toquake and they all fell down young man came walking back to theking. The king said to him: What has happened to yourcompanions? He said: Allah has saved me from them. He againhanded him to some of his courtiers and said: Take him and carryhim away in a small boat and when you reach the middle of theocean (ask him to renounce) his religion, but if he does notrenounce his religion throw him (into the water). So they tookhim and he said: O Allah, save me from them and what they want todo. It was not long before the boat overturned and they weredrowned but he came walking back to the king. The king said tohim: What has happened to your companions? He said: Allah hassaved me from them. He also said to the king: You cannot kill meuntil you do what I ask you to do. And he said: What is that? Hesaid: You should gather people on a plain and hang me by thetrunk (of a tree). Then take an arrow from the quiver and say: Inthe name of Allah, the Lord of the world; then shoot an arrow andif you do that then you would be able to kill me. So he (theking) called the people to an open plain and tied him (the boy)to the trunk of a tree. Then he took an arrow from his quiverplaced the arrow in the bow and then said: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the young boy; he then shot an arrow and it hit histemple. He (the boy) placed his hands upon the temple where thearrow had hit him and he. The people said: We affirm our faith inthe Lord of this young man, we affirm our faith in the Lord ofthis young man, we affirm our faith in the Lord of this youngman. The courtiers came to the king and it was said to him: Doyou see that their faith is in the Lord? He (the king) commandedditches to be dug at important points in the path. When theseditches were dug, and the fire was lit in them it was said (tothe people): He who not turn back from his (boy's) religion willbe thrown in the fire or they will be told to jump in it. (Thepeople courted death but did not renounce religion) till a womancame with her child and she felt hesitant about jumping into thefire the child said to her: O mother, endure (this ordeal) for itis the Truth.
I heard Ash-Sha'bi saying, "A person who was accompanying the Prophet passed by a grave that was separated from the other graves told me that the Prophet once led the people in the (funeral) prayer and the people had aligned behind him. Yahya said, "I do not know whether the last sentences were said by the Prophet or by Yazid." Zaid further said, "The Prophet was asked, 'What about a lost sheep?' The Prophet said, 'Take it, for it is for you or for your brother (i.e. its owner) or for the wolf." Yazid added that it should also be announced publicly. The Prophet said, "Leave it, as it has its feet, water container (reservoir), and it will reach a place of water and eat trees till its owner finds it."
Two men abused each other in front of the Prophet while we were sitting with him. One of the two abused his companion furiously and his face became red. The Prophet said, "I know a word (sentence) the saying of which will cause him to relax if this man says it. Only if he said, 'I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the outcast.' " So they said to that (furious) man, "Don't you hear what the Prophet is saying?" He said, "I am not mad."
A man from the companions of the Prophet said, "Two men abused each other in front of the Prophet and one of them became angry and his anger became so intense that his face became swollen and changed. The Prophet said, 'I know a word the saying of which will cause him to relax if he does say it.' In the year of the conquest of Khaibar I went with Allah's Apostle till we reached Sahba', a place near Khaibar, where Allah's Apostle offered the 'Asr prayer and asked for food. Nothing but Sawrq was brought. He ordered it to be moistened with water. We went out with Allah's Apostle to Khaibar, and when we reached As-Sahba', the Prophet asked for food, and he was offered nothing but Sawiq. We ate, and then Allah's Apostle stood up for the prayer. He rinsed his mouth with water, and we too, rinsed our mouths. While I as in the company of Salman bin Rabi'a and Suhan, in one of the holy battles, I found a whip. One of them told me to drop it but I refused to do so and said that I would give it to its owner if I found him, otherwise I would utilize it. On our return we performed Hajj and on passing by Medina, I asked Ubai bin Ka'b about it. He said, "I found a bag containing a hundred Dinars in the lifetime of the Prophet and took it to the Prophet who said to me, 'Make public announcement about it for one year.' So, I announced it for one year and went to the Prophet who said, 'Announce it publicly for another year.' So, I announced it for another year. I went to him again and he said, 'Announce for another year.' So I announced for still another year. I went to the Prophet for the fourth time, and he said, 'Remember the amount of money, the description of its container and the string it is tied with, and if the owner comes, give it to him; otherwise, utilize it.'
