The Prophet (peace be upon him) borrowed forty thousand from him, and when revenue came in he paid it to him saying, "Allah Most High bless your family and your property! The only reward for a loan is commendation and repayment."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was brought some dates whichcontained worms. He then mentioned the rest of the tradition tothe same effect as the previous (No 3823).
I bought something from the Prophet (peace be upon him) before hereceived his Prophetic commission, and as there was somethingstill due to him I promised him that I would bring it to him athis place, but I forgot. When I remembered three days later, Iwent to that place and found him there. He said: You have vexedme, young man. I have been here for three days waiting for you.
Abdullah heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "More than the number of the B. Tamim will enter Paradise through the intercession of a man of my people,"
Tirmidhi, Darimi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Abdullah saw Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) standing at al-Hazwarah and saying, "I swear by Allah that you are the best part of Allah's earth and the part dearest to Him. Had I not been expelled from you I should not have left."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
My mother called me one day when the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) was sitting in our house. She said: Come here and Ishall give you something. The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) asked her: What did you intend to give him? She replied: Iintended to give him some dates. The Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) said: If you were not to give him anything, a lie wouldbe recorded against you.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was travelling andnight came on, he said: O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah;I seek refuge in Allah from your evil, the evil of what youcontain, the evil of what has been created in you, and the evilof what creeps upon you; I seek refuge in Allah from lions, fromlarge black snakes, from other snakes, from scorpions, from theevil of jinn which inhabit a settlement, and from a parent andhis offspring.
A man came to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and said:Teach me to read the Qur'an, Apostle of Allah.He said: Readthree surahs which begin with A.L.R. He said: My age isadvanced, my mind has become dull (i.e. memory has grown weak),and my tongue has grown heavy). So he said: Then read threesurahs which begin with H.M. He repeated the same words. So hesaid: Read three surahs which begin with the "Glorification ofAllah". But he repeated the same excuse. The man then said:Teach me a comprehensive surah, Apostle of Allah. The Prophet(peace be upon him) taught him Surah (99). "When the Earth isshaken with her earthquake". When he finished it, the man said:By Him Who sent you with truth, I shall never add anything to it.Then man then went away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) saidtwice:The man received salvation.
AbulJawza' said: A man who attended the company of the Prophet(peace be upon him) narrated to me (it is thought that he wasAbdullah ibn Amr): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me:Come to me tomorrow; I shall give you something, I shall give yousomething, I shall reward you something, I shall donate somethingto you. I thought that he would give me some present. He said(to me when I came to him): When the day declines, stand up andpray four rak'ahs. He then narrated something similar.Thisversion adds: Do not stand until you glorify Allah ten times, andpraise Him ten times, and exalt Him ten times, and say, "There isno god but Allah" ten times. Then you should do that in fourrak'ahs. If you are the greatest sinner on earth, you will beforgiven (by Allah) on account of this (prayer). I asked: If Icannot pray this the appointed hour, (what should I do)? Hereplied: Pray that by night or by day (at any time).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Friday prayer isobligatory on him who hears the call.
(Musaddad's version has): The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) made a speech on the day of the conquest of Mecca, and said:Allah is Most Great, three times. He then said: There is no godbut Allah alone: He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant,and alone defeated the companies. (The narrator said:) I haveremembered from Musaddad up to this. Then the agreed version has:Take note! All the merits mentioned in pre-Islamic times, and theclaim made for blood or property are under my feet, except thesupply of water to the pilgrims and the custody of the Ka'bah. Hethen said: The blood-money for unintentional murder which appearsintentional, such as is done with a whip and a stick, is onehundred camels, forty of which are pregnant. Musaddad's versionis more accurate.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There are two qualities orcharacteristics which will not be returned by any Muslim withouthis entering Paradise. While they are easy, those who act uponthem are few. One should say: "Glory be to Allah" ten times afterevery prayer, "Praise be to Allah" ten times and "Allah is MostGreat" ten times. That is a hundred and fifty on the tongue, butone thousand and five hundred on the scale. When he goes to bed,he should say: "Allah is Most Great" thirty-four times, "Praisebe to Allah" thirty-three times, and Glory be to Allahthirty-three times, for that is a hundred on the tongue and athousand on the scale. (He said:) I saw the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) counting them on his hand.The people asked:Apostle of Allah! How is it that while they are easy, those whoact upon them are few?He replied: The Devil comes to one of youwhen he goes to bed and he makes him sleep, before he uttersthem, and he comes to him while he is engaged in prayer and callsa need to his mind before he utters them.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) went out and he had in his hand two books. He said: Do you know what these two books are? We said: Allah's Messenger, we do not know but only that you inform us. Thereupon he said: This one which my right hand possesses is a Book from the Lord of the worlds. It contains the names of the inmates of Paradise and the name of their forefathers and those of their tribes. It is most exhaustive and nothing will be added to it nor anything eliminated from it up to eternity. He then said: This one in my left hand is a Book from the Lord of the worlds. It contains the names of the denizens of Hell and the names of their forefathers and their tribes. It is also exhaustive to the end and nothing will be added to it nor anything will be eliminated from it. The Companions said: Allah's Messenger, (if this is the case) then where lies the use of doing a deed if the affair is already decided. Thereupon he said: Stick to the right course and remain as close to it as possible for one who is to be inmate of Paradise would end his life by an act befitting the inmates of Paradise, no matter what he may have done and for one who is the denizen of Hell, his deed would end on that which is a deed of the denizens of Hell, no matter what he may have done (before). Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) then threw the books and making a gesture with his hand said: Allah has made a decision about His servants (a section will be in Paradise and a section in the blaze).

I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) saying: Verily Allah created the elements of man in darkness and then He infused into them His light. He who received this light (and then made use of it) received the right guidance and he who erred was led astray. That is why I say that the Pen has no more to write about Allah's knowledge.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There will befall my Ummah exactly (all those) evils which befell the people of Isra'il, so much so that if there was one amongst them who openly committed fornication with his mother there will be among my Ummah one who will do that, and if the people of Isra'il were fragmented into seventy-two sects my Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Hell Fire except one sect. They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, which is that? Whereupon he said: It is one to which I and my companions belong.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) happened to pass by two groups (of Muslims) in the mosque and he said: Both of them are good, but one is superior to the other. One group is supplicating Allah and praying Him. If He so wills He will confer upon them and if He so wills He will withhold. So far as those who are acquiring the understanding of religion and its knowledge and are busy in teaching the ignorant, they are superior. Verily I have been sent as a teacher. He then sat down amongst them.

He who invokes blessings upon Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) once, Allah and His Angels shower seventy blessings upon him.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When anyone of you breaks wind while observing jalsah (the sitting posture) at the end of his prayer before concluding it with Taslim, his prayer remains valid.
Transmitted by Tirmidhi and he said: This is a hadith the chain of transmission of which is not sound and there is some confusion in its chain of transmission.
Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Any Muslim who dies on Friday or on Thursday night will be protected by Allah from the testing in the grave."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying this is a gharib tradition whose isnad is not fully connected.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When a servant of Allah is accustomed to worship Him in a good manner, then becomes ill, the angel who is entrusted with him is told to record for him actions equivalent to those which he did when he was well, till Allah sets him free from his illness or takes him in death.
This tradition is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.
When a man who had been born in Medina died there, the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed at his funeral and said, "Would that he had died somewhere else than in his birthplace!" On being asked why he had said that he replied, "When a man dies somewhere else than in his birthplace,a space will be measured for him in Paradise, equal to the distance between his birthplace and the place where he died."
Nasa'i and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The gift to a believer is death,"
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If you worship the Compassionate One, provide food, and greet all whom you meet, you will enter Paradise in peace."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Fasting and the Qur'an intercede for a man. Fasting says, 'O my Lord, I have kept him away from his food and his passions by day, so accept my intercession for him.' The Qur'an says, 'I have kept him away from sleep by night, so accept my intercession for him.' Then their intercession is accepted."
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Praise be to Allah" is the beginning of thanksgiving, for the man who does not praise Allah has not thanked Him.
Transmitted by Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Glory be to Allah" fills half the scale, "Praise be to Allah" fills it, and "There is no god but Allah" has no veil between it and Allah till it reaches Him.
Tirmidhi transmitted, saying this is a gharib tradition whose isnad is not strong.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "None of you may take back his gift, except in the case of a father taking it from his child,"
Nasa'i and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "An undutiful son, a gambler, one who casts up what he has given, and one who is addicted to wine will not enter Paradise."
Darimi transmitted it. A version of his has a bastard instead of a gambler.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who keeps silence will be safe."
Transmitted by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Darimi and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The Lord's good pleasure results from a father's good pleasure, and the Lord's displeasure results from a father's displeasure."
Transmitted by Tirmidhi.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who casts up the favours he has done, he who is disobedient to parents, and he who is addicted to wine will not enter Paradise."
Nasa'i and Darimi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The best companion in Allah's estimation is the one who is best to his companion, and the best neighbour in Allah's estimation is the one who is best to his neighbour."
Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
When Allah's Messenger was asked who was most excellent, he replied, "Everyone whose heart is clear of pollution (makhmum al-qalb) and whose tongue is truthful." On being told by his hearers that they understood "whose tongue is truthful," but not makhmum al-qalb he replied, "The one who is pure, the one who is pure, with no sin, iniquity, deceit, or envy."
Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If you have four characteristics, whatever worldly advantage passes you by does not matter to you: keeping a trust, speaking the truth, a good character, and abstemiousness in food."
Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The world is the believer's prison and famine, but when he leaves the world he leaves the prison and the famine."
It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.
While I was sitting in the mosque at the same time as some of the poor ones among the Emigrants were seated in a circle, the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered and sat with them, so I got up and went over to them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, "Let the poor ones among the Emigrants rejoice over what makes their faces glad, for they will enter Paradise forty years before the rich." Abdullah ibn Amr said he saw their colour shine so that he wished to be along with them, or to be one of them.
Darimi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came upon us when my mother and I were plastering something and asked, "What is this, Abdullah?" On my telling him it was something we were repairing, he said, "What has been commanded is more urgent than that."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "There will be civil strife which will wipe out the Arabs, and their slain will go to Hell. During it the tongue will be more severe than blows of the sword."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said that on the Day of Resurrection Allah will separate a man belonging to his people in presence of all creatures and spread ninety-nine scrolls over him, each scroll extending as far as the eye could see, then say, "Do you object to anything in this? Have my scribes who keep note wronged you?" He will reply, "No, my Lord." He will ask him if he has any excuse, and when he tells his Lord that he has none, He will say, "On the contrary you have with Us a good deed, and you will not be wronged today." A document will then be brought out containing, "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger," and He will say, "Come to be weighed." He will ask his Lord, "What this document along with these scrolls is? And He will reply, "You will not be wronged." The scrolls will then be put in one side of the scale and the document in the other, and the scrolls will become light and the document heavy, for nothing could compare in weight with Allah's name.
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Abdullah heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say: "The sky has not covered and the Earth has not carried anyone more truthful than AbuDharr."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Someone came to him and said: What is this hadith that younarrate that the Last Hour will come at a certain time? Thereuponhe said: Hallowed be Allah, there is no god but Allah (or wordsto the same effect). I have decided that I shall not narrateanything to anyone now. I have only said that you will see aftersome time an important event: that the (sacred) House (Ka'bah)will be burnt and it definitely happen. He then reported thatAllah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The Dajjal willappear in my Ummah and he will stay (in the world) for forty--Icannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or fortyyears. Allah will then send Jesus, son of Mary, who will resembleUrwah ibn Mas'ud. He (Jesus Christ) will chase him and kill him.Then people will live for seven years, during which time therewill be no rancour between any two persons. After that Allah willsend a cold wind from the direction of Syria. None will surviveon Earth, having a speck of good in him or faith in him: he willdie. Even if some among you were to enter the innermost part ofthe mountain, this wind would reach that place also and causeyour death. I heard Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) assaying: Only the wicked people will survive and they will be ascareless as birds with the characteristics of beasts. They willnever appreciate good nor condemn evil. Then Satan will come tothem, in human form, and would say: Don't you respond?They willsay: What do you order us to do? He will command them to worshipthe idols but, in spite of this, they will have an abundance ofsustenance and lead comfortable lives. Then the trumpet will beblown and he who hears it will bend his neck to one side andraise it from the other side. The first one to hear that trumpetwill be the person who is busy in setting right the cistern meantfor supplying water to the camels. He will faint and the otherpeople will also faint. Then Allah will send or He will cause tobe sent rain which will be like dew and there will grow out of itthe bodies of people. Then the second trumpet will be blown andthey will stand up and begin to look (around).Then it will besaid: O people, go to your Lord. They will be made to stand thereand they will be questioned. Then it will be said: Bring out agroup (of them) for the Hell-Fire. It will be asked: How much? It will be said: Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of one thousandfor the Hell-Fire. That will be the day that will make thechildren old because of its terror and that will be the day aboutwhich it has been said: "On the day when the shank will beuncovered".
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The compensation for unintentional murder which resembles intentional, such as is done with a whip and a stick, is a hundred camels, forty of which are pregnant."
Nasa'i and Ibn Majah transmitted it, and AbuDawud transmitted it both on his authority and on that of Ibn Umar.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The passing away of the world would mean less to Allah than the murder of a Muslim man."
Tirmidhi and Nasa'i transmitted it. Some traced it only to the Companion, and that is the soundest view. Ibn Majah transmitted it on the authority of al-Bara' ibn Azib.
We buried a deceased person in the company of the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him). When we had finished, the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) returned and we also returned with him.When he approached his door, he stopped, and we saw a womancoming towards him. He (the narrator) said: I think herecognized her. When she went away, we came to know that she wasFatimah. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said to her:What brought you out of your house, Fatimah? She replied: I cameto the people of this house, Apostle of Allah, and I showed pityand expressed my condolences to them for their deceased relation. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: You might havegone to the graveyard with them. She replied: I seek refuge inAllah! I heard you referring to what you mentioned. He said: Ifyou had gone to the graveyard...He then mentioned severe wordsabout it. I then asked Rabi'ah (a narrator of this tradition)about al-kuda (stony land). He replied: I think it means thegraves.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When a man comes to visit asick person, he should say: O Allah, cure Thy servant, who maythen wreak havoc on an enemy for Thy sake, or walk at a funeralfor Thy sake.
When we went out along with the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) to at-Ta'if we passed a grave. I heard the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) say: This is the grave of AbuRighal. He wasin this sacred mosque (sanctuary) protecting himself (frompunishment). When he came out, he suffered the same punishmentwhich his people suffered at this place, and he was buried in it.The sign of it is that a golden bough was buried with him. If youdig it out, you will find it with him. The people hastened to itand took out the bough.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: people of two differentreligions would not inherit from one another.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Knowledge has threecategories; anything else is extra; a precise verse, or anestablished sunnah (practice), or a firm obligatory duty.
Al-'As ibn Wa'il left his will that a hundred slaves should beemancipated on his behalf. His son Hisham emancipated fiftyslaves and his son Amr intended to emancipate the remaining fiftyon his behalf, but he said: I should ask first the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him). He, therefore, came to the Prophet(peace be upon him) and said: Apostle of Allah, my father left inhis will that a hundred slaves should be emancipated on hisbehalf and Hisham has emancipated fifty on his behalf and fiftyremain. Shall I emancipate them on his behalf? The Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) said: Had he been a Muslim and you hademancipated slaves on his behalf, or given sadaqah on his behalf,or performed the pilgrimage, that would have reached him.
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: I ampoor, I have nothing (with me), and I have an orphan. He said:Use the property of your orphan without spending it lavishly,hurrying and taking it as your own property.
There was a bedouin called AbuTha'labah. He said: Apostle ofAllah, I have trained dogs, so tell me your opinion about(eating) the animal they hunt. The Prophet (peace be upon him)said: If you have trained dogs, then eat what they catch for you.He asked: Whether it is slaughtered or not? He replied: Yes. Heasked: Does it apply even if it eats any of it? He replied: Evenif it eats any of it. He again asked: Apostle of Allah, tell meyour opinion about my bow (i.e. the game hunted by arrow). Hesaid: Eat what your bow returns to you, whether it is slaughteredor not. He asked: If it goes out of my sight? He replied: Even ifit goes out of your sight, provided it has no stench, or you finda mark on it other than the mark of your arrow. He asked: Tell meabout the use of the vessels of the Magians when we are forced touse them. He replied: Wash them and eat in them.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked about theaqiqah. He replied: Allah does not like the breaking of ties(uquq), as though he disliked the name. And he said: If anyonehas a child born to him and wishes to offer a sacrifice on itsbehalf, he may offer two resembling sheep for a boy and one for agirl. And he was asked about fara'. He replied: Fara' is right.If you leave it (i.e. let it grow till it becomes a healthy camelof one year or two years, then you give it to a widow or give itin the path of Allah for using it as a riding beast, it is betterthan slaughtering it at the age when its meat is stuck to itshair, and you turn over your milking vessel and annoy yourshe-camel.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I have been commanded tocelebrate festival ('Id) on the day of sacrifice, which Allah,Most High, has appointed for this community. A man said: If I donot find except a she-goat or a she-camel borrowed for milk orother benefits, should I sacrifice it? He said: No, but youshould clip your hair , and nails, trim your moustaches, andshave your pubes. This is all your sacrifice in the eyes ofAllah, Most High.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Muslims are equalin respect of blood. The lowest of them is entitled to giveprotection on behalf of them, and the one residing far away maygive protection on behalf of them. They are like one hand overagainst all those who are outside the community. Those who havequick mounts should return to those who have slow mounts, andthose who got out along with a detachment (should return) tothose who are stationed. A believer shall not be killed for anunbeliever, nor a confederate within the term of confederationwith him.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him), AbuBakr and Umar burnedthe belongings of anyone who had been dishonest about booty andbeat him.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) gained booty heordered Bilal to make a public announcement. He made a publicannouncement, and when the people brought their booty, he wouldtake a fifth and divide it. Thereafter a man brought a halter ofhair and said: Apostle of Allah, this is a part of the booty wegot. He asked: Have you heard Bilal making announcement threetimes? He replied: Yes. He asked: What did prevent you frombringing it? He made some excuse, to which he said: Be (as youare), you may bring it on the Day of Judgment, for I shall notaccept it from you.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: Return tothem (Hawazin) their women and their sons. If any of youwithholds anything from this booty, we have six camels for himfrom the first booty which Allah gives us. The Prophet (peace beupon him) then approached a camel, and taking a hair from itshump said: O people, I get nothing of this booty, not even this(meanwhile raising his two fingers) but the fifth, and the fifthis returned to you, so hand over threads and needles. A man gotup with a ball of hair in his hand and said: I took this torepair the cloth under a pack-saddle. The Apostle of Allah (peacebe upon him) said: You can have what belongs to me and to theBanu al-Muttalib. He said: If it produces the result that I nowrealise, I have no desire for it.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A single rider isa devil, and a pair of riders are a pair of devils, but three area company of riders.
A man came to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and said:I came to you to take the oath of allegiance to you onemigration, and I left my parents weeping. He (the Prophet) said:Return to them and make them laugh as you made them weep.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The warrior gets hisreward, and the one who equips him gets his own reward and thatof the warrior.
Apostle of Allah, tell me about jihad and fighting. He replied:Abdullah ibn Amr, if you fight with endurance seeking from Allahyour reward, Allah will resurrect you showing endurance andseeking your reward from Him, but, if you fight for vain showseeking to acquire much, Allah will resurrect you making a vainshow and seeking to acquire much. In whatever you fight or arekilled, Abdullah ibn Amr, in that state Allah will resurrect you.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: No one should sail on thesea except the one who is going to perform hajj or umrah, or theone who is fighting in Allah's path for under the sea there is afire, and under the fire there is a sea.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Returning home is likegoing on an expedition.
A woman said: Apostle of Allah, my womb is a vessel to this sonof mine, my breasts, a water-skin for him, and my lap a guard forhim, yet his father has divorced me, and wants to take him awayfrom me. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: You havemore right to him as long as you do not marry.
A man got up and said: Apostle of Allah, so-and-so is my son; Ihad illicit intercourse with his mother in the pre-Islamicperiod. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: There isno unlawful claiming of paternity in Islam. What was done inpre-Islamic times has been annulled. The child is attributed tothe one on whose bed it is born, and the fornicator is deprivedof any right.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) decided regarding one who wastreated as a member of a family after the death of his father, towhom he was attributed when the heirs said he was one of them,that if he was the child of a slave-woman whom the father ownedwhen he had intercourse with her, he was included among those whosought his inclusion, but received none of the inheritance whichwas previously divided; he, however, received his portion of theinheritance which had not already been divided; but if the fatherto whom he was attributed had disowned him, he was not joined tothe heirs. If he was a child of a slave-woman whom the father didnot possess or of a free woman with whom he had illicitintercourse, he was not joined to the heirs and did not inheriteven if the one to whom he was attributed is the one who claimedpaternity, since he was a child of fornication whether his motherwas free or a slave.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is no divorce exceptin what you possess; there is no possession, there is no saletransaction till you possess. The narrator Ibn as-Sabbah added:There is no fulfilling a vow till you possess.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If one of you marries awoman or buys a slave, he should say: "O Allah, I ask Thee forthe good in her, and in the disposition Thou hast given her; Itake refuge in Thee from the evil in her, and in the dispositionThou hast given her." When he buys a camel, he should take holdof the top of its hump and say the same kind of thing.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A woman whomarries on a dower or a reward or a promise before thesolemnisation of marriage is entitled to it; and whatever isfixed for her after solemnisation of marriage belongs to whom itis given. A man is more entitled to receive a thing given as agift on account of his daughter or sister (than other kinds ofgifts).
Marthad ibn AbuMarthad al-Ghanawi used to take prisoners (of war)from Mecca (to Medina). At Mecca there was a prostitute calledInaq who had illicit relations with him. (Marthad said:) I cameto the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said to him: May I marryInaq, Apostle of Allah? The narrator said: He kept silencetowards me. Then the verse was revealed:"....and the adulteressnone shall marry save and adulterer or an idolater." He called meand recited this (verse) to me, and said: Do not marry her.
Shu'ayb ibn Abdullah said: I went round the Ka'bah along withAbdullah ibn Amr. When we came behind the Ka'bah I asked: Do younot seek refuge? He uttered the words: I seek refuge in Allahfrom the Hell-fire. He then went (farther) and touched the BlackStone, and stood between the corner (Black Stone) and theentrance of the Ka'bah. He then placed his breast, his face, hishands and his palms in this manner, and he spread them, and said:I saw the apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) doing like this.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked about thehanging fruit. He replied: If a needy person takes some and doesnot take a supply away in his garment, he is not to be blamed,but he who carries any of it away is to be find twice the valueand punished, and he who steals any of it after it has been putin the place where dates are dried is to have his hand cut off ifits value reaches the price of a shield. Regarding stray camelsand sheep he mentioned the same as others have done. He said: Hewas asked about finds and replied: If it is in a frequented roadand a large town, make the matter known for a year, and if itsowner comes, give it to him, but if he does not, it belongs toyou. If it is in a place which has been a waste from ancienttime, or if it is a hidden treasure (belonging to the Islamicperiod), it is subject to the payment of the fifth.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) preached and said:Abstain from avarice, for those who had been before you wereannihilated due to avarice. It (avarice) commanded them to showniggardliness; it commanded them to cut off their relationshipwith their nearest relatives, so they cut off. It commanded themto show profligacy, so they showed it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There are fortycharacteristics; the highest of them is to give a goat on loan(for benefiting from its milk). If any man carries out any ofthose characteristics with the hope of getting a reward andtestifying to the promise for it, Allah will admit him toParadise for it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Sadaqah may not be given toa rich man or to one who has strength and is sound in limbs.
Banu Shababah were a sub-clan of the tribe Fahm. (They used topay) one bag (of honey) out of ten bags. Sufyan ibn Abdullahath-Thaqafi gave them two woods as protected lands. They used togive as much honey (as zakat) as they gave to the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him). He (Sufyan) used to protect theirwoods.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is to be nocollecting of sadaqah (zakat) from a distance, nor must peoplewho own property remove it far away, and their sadaqahs are to bereceived in their dwelling.
A woman came to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and shewas accompanied by her daughter who wore two heavy gold banglesin her hands. He said to her: Do you pay zakat on them? She said:No. He then said: Are you pleased that Allah may put two banglesof fire on your hands? Thereupon she took them off and placedthem before the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: They are forAllah and His Apostle.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The supplication which getsthe quickest answer is that made by one distant Muslim foranother.
I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) counting theglorification of Allah on fingers. Ibn Qudamah said (in hisversion: "With his right hands".
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: One who wasdevoted to the Qur'an will be told to recite, ascend and recitecarefully as he recited carefully when he was in the world, forhe will reach his abode when he comes to the last verse herecites.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone prays at nightreciting regularly ten verses, he will not be recorded among thenegligent; if anyone prays at night and recites a hundred verses,he will be recorded among those who are obedient to Allah; and ifanyone prays at night reciting one thousand verses, he will berecorded among those who receive huge rewards.
Wahb ibn Munabbih said: Abdullah ibn Amr asked the Prophet (peacebe upon him); In how many days should one complete the recitationof the Qur'an? He said: In forty days. He then said: In onemonth. He again said: In twenty days. He then said: In fifteendays. He then said: In ten days. Finally he said: In seven days.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who recites the Qur'anin a period less than three days does not understand it.
Yazid ibn Abdullah said that Abdullah ibn Amr asked the Prophet(peace be upon him): In how many days should I complete therecitation of the whole Qur'an, Apostle of Allah? He replied: Inone month. He said: I am more energetic to complete it in aperiod less than this. He kept on repeating these words andlessening the period until he said: Complete its recitation inseven days. He again said: I am more energetic to complete it ina period less than this. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Hewho finishes the recitation of the Qur'an in less than three daysdoes not understand it.
There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him). The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) stood up and he was not going to perform bowing till hebowed; and he was not going to raise his head till he raised(after bowing); and he was not going to prostrate himself till heprostrated himself; and he was not going to raise his head tillhe raised (at the end of prostration); he did similarly in thesecond rak'ah, he then puffed in the last prostration saying;Fie, Fie! He then said: My Lord, didst Thou not promise me thatThou wouldst not punish them so long as I will remain among them?Didst Thou not promise me that Thou will not punish them so longas they continue to beg pardon of Thee. The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) finished the prayer, and the sun was clear.The narrator then narrated the tradition (in full).
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed for rain, hesaid: O Allah! Provide water for Thy servants and Thy cattle,display Thy mercy and give life to Thy dead land.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say on the day of thebreaking of the fast seven takbirs in the first rak'ah and thenrecite the Qur'an, and utter the takbir (Allah is most great).Then he would stand, and utter the takbir four times. Thereafterhe would recite the Qur'an and bow.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Three types of peopleattend Friday prayer; One is present in a frivolous way and thatis all he gets from it; another comes with a supplication, Allahmay grant or refuse his request as He wishes; another is presentsilently and quietly with-out stepping over a Muslim or annoyinganyone, and that is an atonement for his sins till the nextFriday and three days more, the reason being that Allah, theExalted, says: "He who does a good deed will have ten times asmuch" (vi.160).
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited buying andselling in the mosque, announcing aloud about a lost thing, therecitation of a poem in it, and prohibited sitting in a circle(in the mosque) on Friday before the prayer.
I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) praying both barefooted and wearing sandals.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When the Imam completes theprayer and sits (for reciting tashahhud), and then becomesdefiled (i.e. his ablution becomes void) before he speaks (tosomeone), his prayer becomes complete. And those who prayedbehind him also complete the prayer.
A man said: Apostle of Allah, the mu'adhdhins excel us. TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Say (the same words)as they say, and when you come to the end, make a petition andthat will be granted to you.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Command yourchildren to pray when they become seven years old, and beat themfor it (prayer) when they become ten years old; and arrange theirbeds (to sleep) separately.
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked him:Messenger of Allah, how is the ablution (to performed)? He (theProphet) then called for water in a vessel and washed his handsup to the wrists three times, then washed his face three times,and washed his forearms three times. He then wiped his head andinserted both his index fingers in his ear-holes; he wiped theback of his ears with his thumbs and the front of his ears withthe index fingers. He then washed his feet three times. Then hesaid: This is how ablution should be performed. If anyone doesmore or less than this, he has done wrong and transgressed, or(said) transgressed and done wrong.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A vow is bindingin those things by which the pleasure of Allah is sought, and anoath to break ties of relationship is not binding.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: An oath or a vowabout something over which a human being has no control, and todisobey Allah, and to break ties of relationship is not binding.If anyone takes an oath and then considers something else betterthan it, he should give it up, and do what is better, for leavingit is its atonement.
A woman came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: Apostleof Allah, I have taken a vow to play the tambourine over you. Hesaid: Fulfil your vow. She said: And I have taken a vow toperform a sacrifice in such a such a place, a place in whichpeople had performed sacrifices in pre-Islamic times. He asked:For an Idol? She replied: No. He asked: For an image? Shereplied: No. He said: Fulfil your vow.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded him to equipan army, but the camels were insufficient. So he commanded him tokeep back the young camels of sadaqah, and he was taking a camelto be replaced by two when the camels of sadaqah came.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Both parties in a businesstransaction have a right to annul it so long as they have notseparated unless it is a bargain with the option to annul isattached to it; and it is not permissible for one of them toseparate from the other for fear that one may demand that thebargain be rescinded.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade the type oftransactions in which earnest money was paid. Malik said: Thismeans, as we think--Allah better knows-that a man buys a slave orhires an animal, and he says: I give you a dinar on conditionthat if I give up the transaction or hire, what I gave you isyours.
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: Apostleof Allah, I have property and children, and my father finishes myproperty. He replied; You and your property belong to yourfather; your children come from the pleasantest of what you earn;so enjoy from the earning of your children.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The similitude of the onewho takes back what he gifted is like that of a dog which vomitsand then it eats vomit. When a donor seeks to take back (hisgift), it should be made known and he informed why he sought totake it back. Then whatever he donated should be returned to him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: It is not permissible for awoman to present a gift (from her husband's property) except withthe permission of her husband.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) cursed the one whobribes and the one who takes bribe.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) rejected the testimonyof a deceitful man and woman, of one who harbours rancour againsthis brother, and he rejected the testimony of one who isdependent on a family, and he allowed his testimony for other.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The proviso of aloan combined with a sale is not allowable, nor two conditionsrelating to one transaction, nor the profit arising fromsomething which is not in one's charge, nor selling what is notin your possession.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) decided regarding thestream al-Mahzur that its water should be held back till itreached the ankles, and that the upper waters should then beallowed to flow to the lower.
I used to write everything which I heard from the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him). I intended (by it) to memorise it. TheQuraysh prohibited me saying: Do you write everything that youhear from him while the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) is ahuman being: he speaks in anger and pleasure? So I stoppedwriting, and mentioned it to the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim). He signalled with his finger to him mouth and said: Write,by Him in Whose hand my soul lies, only right comes out from it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to relate to us traditionsfrom the children of Isra'il till morning came; he would not getup except for obligatory prayer.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade wine (khamr), game ofchance (maysir), drum (kubah), and wine made from millet(ghubayrah), saying: Every intoxicant is forbidden.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was never seen recliningwhile eating, nor walking with two men at his heels.
On the day of Khaybar the Apostle of Allah (may pease be uponhim) forbade (eating) the flesh of domestic asses, and the animalwhich feeds on filth: riding it and eating its flesh.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If I drinkan antidote, or tie an amulet, or compose poetry, I am the typewho does not care what he does.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) sued to teach them thefollowing words in the case of alarm: I seek refuge in Allah'sperfect words from His anger, the evil of His servants, the evilsuggestions of the devils and their presence. Abdullah ibn Amrused to teach them to those of his children who had reachedpuberty, and he wrote them down (on some material) and hung onthe child who had not reached puberty.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A slave who has enteredinto an agreement to purchase his freedom is a slave as long as adirham of the agreed price remains to be paid.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If any slave entered intoan agreement to buy his freedom for one hundred uqiyahs and hepays them all but ten, he remains a slave (until he pays theremaining ten); and if a slave entered into an agreement topurchase his freedom for one hundred dinars, and he pays them allbut ten dinars, he remains a slave (until he pays the remainingten).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: After some time the landsof the non-Arabs will be conquered for you, and there you willfind houses called hammamat (hot baths). so men should not enterthem (to wash) except in lower garments, and forbid the women toenter them except a sick or one who is in a child-bed.
We came down with the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) from aturning of a valley. He turned his attention to me and I waswearing a garment dyed with a reddish yellow dye. He asked: Whatis this garment over you? I recognised what he disliked. I thencame to my family who were burning their oven. I threw it (thegarment) in it and came to him the next day. He asked: Abdullah,what have you done with the garment? I informed him about it. Hesaid: Why did you not give it to one of your family to wear, forthere is no harm in it for women.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) saw me. The version ofAbuAli al-Lula' has: I think I wore a garment dyed with a reddishyellow colour. He asked: What is this? So I went and burnt it.The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: What have you done withyour garment? I replied: I burnt it. He said: Why did you notgive it to one of your women to wear?
A man wearing two red garments passed the Prophet (peace be uponhim) and gave him a greeting, but he did not respond to hisgreeting.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When one of you marries hismale-slave to his slave-woman, he should not look at her privateparts.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When one of you marries hisfemale servant to his slave or to his employee, he should notlook at her private part below the navel and above the knees.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Do not pluck outgrey hair. If any believer grows a grey hair in Islam, he willhave light on the Day of Resurrection. (This is Sufyan'sversion). Yahya's version says: Allah will record on his behalf agood deed for it, and will blot out a sin for it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There will be civil strifewhich wipe out the Arabs, and their slain will go to Hell. Duringit the tongue will be more severe than blows of the sword.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Leave the Abyssinians aloneas long as they leave you alone, for it is only the Abyssinianwith short legs who will seek to take out the treasure of theKa'bah.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: How will you do when thattime will come? Or he said: A time will soon come when the peopleare sifted and only dregs of mankind survive and their covenantsand guarantees have been impaired and they have disagreed amongthemselves and become thus, interwining his fingers. They asked:What do you order us to do, Apostle of Allah? He replied: Acceptwhat you approve, abandon whatyou disapprove, attend to yourown affairs and leave alone the affairs of the generality.
When we were around the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him), hementioned the period of commotion (fitnah) saying: When you seethe people that their covenants have been impaired, (thefulfilling of) the guarantees becomes rare, and they become thus(interwining his fingers). I then got up and said: What should Ido at that time, may Allah make me ransom for you? He replied:Keep to your house, control your tongue, accept what you approve,abandon what you disapprove, attend to your own affairs, andleave alone the affairs of the generality.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Forgive the infliction ofprescribed penalties among yourselves, for any prescribed penaltyof which I hear must be carried out.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked about fruitwhich was bung up and said: If a needy person takes some with hismouth and does not take a supply away in his garment, there isnothing on him, but he who carries any of it is to be fined twicethe value and punished, and he who steals any of it after it hasbeen put in the place where dates are dried to have his hand cutoff if their value reaches the value of a shield. If he steals athing less in value than it, he is to be find twice the value andpunished.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A believer will not bekilled for an infidel. If anyone kills a man deliberately, he isto be handed over to the relatives of the one who has beenkilled. If they wish, they may kill, but if they wish, they mayaccept blood-wit
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) crying for help. Hesaid: His slave-girl, Apostle of Allah! He said: Woe to you, whathappened with you ? He said that it was an evil one. He saw theslave-girl of his master; he became jealous of him, and cut offhis penis. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Bringthe man to me. The man was called, but people could not getcontrol over him. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) thensaid: Go away, you are free. He asked: Apostle of Allah! uponwhom does my help lie? He replied: On every believer, or he said:On every Muslim.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) killed a man of BanuNadr ibn Malik at Harrah ar-Righa' at the bank of Layyatal-Bahrah. The transmitter Mahmud (ibn Khalid) also mentioned thewords along with the words "at Bahrah" "the slayer and the slainwere from among them". Mahmud alone transmitted in this traditionthe words "at the bank of Layyah".
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said, mentioning thetradition similar to the one transmitted by Ali. This versionadds: The most distant of them gives protection as from all,those who are strong among them send back (spoil) to those whoare weak among them, and their expeditions sending it back tothose who are at home.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) gave judgment that ifanyone is killed accidentally, his blood-wit should be onehundred camels: thirty she-camels which had entered their secondyear, thirty she-camels which had entered their third year,thirty she-camels which had entered their fourth year, and tenmale camels which had entered their third year.
The value of the blood-money at the time of the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) was eight hundred dinars or eight thousanddirhams, and the blood-money for the people of the Book was halfof that for Muslims. He said: This applied till Umar (Allah bepleased with him) became caliph and he made a speech in which hesaid: Take note! Camels have become dear. So Umar fixed the valuefor those who possessed gold at one thousand dinars, for thosewho possessed silver at twelve thousand (dirhams), for those whopossessed cattle at two hundred cows, for those who possessedsheep at two thousand sheep, and for those who possessed suits ofclothing at two hundred suits. He left the blood-money fordhimmis (protected people) as it was, not raising it inproportion to the increase he made in the blood-wit.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in his address while he wasleaning against the Ka'bah: (The blood-wit) for each finger isten camels.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: For each tooth are tencamels.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) would fix theblood-money for accidental killing at the rate of four hundreddinars or their equivalent in silver for townsmen, and he wouldfix it according to the price of camels. So when they were dear,he increased the amount to be paid, and when cheap pricesprevailed he reduced the amount to be paid. In the time of theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) they reached between fourhundred and eight hundred dinars, their equivalent in silverbeing eight thousand dirhams. He said: The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) gave judgment that those who possessed cattleshould pay two hundred cows, and those who possessed sheep twothousand sheep. He said: The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) said: The blood-money is to be treated as something to beinherited by the heirs of the one who has been killed, and theremainder should be divided among the agnates.He said: TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) gave judgment that forcutting off a nose completely there was full blood-money, onehundred (camels) were to be paid. If the tip of the nose was cutoff, half of the blood-money,i.e. fifty camels were to be paid,or their equivalent in gold or in silver, or a hundred cows, orone thousand sheep. For the hand, when it was cut of,f half ofthe blood-money was to be paid; for one foot of half, theblood-money was to be paid. For a wound in the head, a third ofthe blood-money was due, i.e. thirty-three camels and a third ofthe blood-money, or their equivalent in gold, silver, cows orsheep. For a head thrust which reaches the body, the sameblood-money was to be paid. Ten camels were to be paid for everyfinger, and five camels for every tooth. The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) gave judgment that the blood-money for awoman should be divided among her relatives on her father's side,who did not inherit anything from her except the residence of herheirs. If she was killed, her blood-money should be distributedamong her heirs, and they would have the right of taking revengeon the murderer. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said:There is nothing for the murderer; and if he (the victim) has noheir, his heir will be the one who is nearest to him among thepeople, but the murderer should not inherit anything. Muhammadsaid: All this has been transmitted to me by Sulayman ibn Musa onthe authority of Amr ibn Shu'ayb who, on his father's authority,said that his grandfather heard it from the Prophet (peace beupon him).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Blood-wit for whatresembles intentional murder is to be made as severe as that forintentional murder, but the culprit is not to be killed. Khalidgave us some additional information on the authority of IbnRashid: That (unintentional murder which resembles intentionalmurder) means that Satan jumps among the people and then theblood is shed blindly without any malice and weapon.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Blood-wit for every woundwhich lays bare a bone is five camels.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) gave judgment that athird of the blood-wit should be paid for an eye fixed in itsplace.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The blood-wit fora man who makes a covenant is half of the blood-wit for a freeman.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Anyone whopractises medicine when he is not known as a practitioner will beheld responsible.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Musaddad's version has: Headdressed on the day of Conquest. The agreed version then goes:Beware! Every object of pride of pre-Islamic times, whether it isblood-vengeance or property, mentioned or claimed, has been putunder my feet except supply of water to the pilgrims and custodyof the House (the Ka'bah). He then said: Beware! The blood-witfor unintentional murder, such as is done with a whip and stick,is one hundred camels, forty of which are pregnant.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The trumpet (sur) whichwill be blown.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If the property of anyoneis designed to be taken away without any right and he fights andis killed, he is a martyr.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: One should not sitbetween two men except with their permission.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: It is not lawfulfor a man to separate two persons except with their permission.
There are some expressions which a man utters three times when hegets up from an assembly he will be forgiven for what happened inthe assembly; and no one utters them in an assembly held for anoble cause or for remembrance of Allah but that is stamped withthem just as a document is stamped with a signet-ring. Theseexpressions are: Glory be to Thee, O Allah, and I begin withpraise of Thee, there is no god but thou; I ask Thy pardon, andreturn to Thee in repentance.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Compassionate One hasmercy on those who are merciful. If you show mercy to those whoare on the earth, He Who is in the heaven will show mercy to you.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Those who do not show mercyto our young ones and do not realise the right of our elders arenot from us.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Allah , theExalted, hates the eloquent one among men who moves his tongueround (among his teeth), as cattle do.
Mujahid said that Abdullah ibn Amr slaughtered a sheep and said:Have you presented a gift from it to my neighbour, the Jew, for Iheard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Gabriel kepton commending the neighbour to me so that I thought he would makean heir?
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) came upon us when mymother and I were plastering a wall of mine. He asked: What isthis, Abdullah ? I replied: It is something I am repairing. Hesaid! The matter is quicker for you than that.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) heard some people disputing about the Qur'an. Thereupon he said: It was because of this that those gone before you had perished. They set parts of the books against the others (whereas the fact is) that the Book of Allah has been revealed with one part confirming the others. Therefore, do not falsify some parts with the others and speak only that which you know; that which you do not know, refer it to one who knows it well.

A desert Arab came to Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) and asked him about ablution. He demonstrated (washing each part of his body) thrice, and then said: That is (the method) of the ablution. And he who dose more than this has done wrong, transgressed the limit and has oppressed (himself).
Transmitted by Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, and AbuDawud transmitted something to the same effect.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) happened to pass by Sa'd as he was performing ablution. Whereupon he said: Sa'd what is this extravagance? He said: Can there be any idea of extravagance in ablution? Whereupon he (the Prophet) said: Yes, even if you are by the side of a flowing river.

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) mentioned prayer one day and said: He who observes it constantly, it will serve for him as a light, as (burhan), an evidence, and (as a means of) salvation on the Day of Resurrection. He who does not observe it constantly, it will not serve for him as a light, as an evidence, and (as a means of) salvation on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be with Qarun, Pharaoh, Haman and Ubayy ibn Khalaf.
Transmitted by Ahmad, Darimi, and Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman transmitted it.
Abdullah ibn Amr saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) drinking water while standing as well as while sitting.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah is pleased to see the effect of his blessing on His servant.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious looks down on the middle night of Sha'ban and forgives all His creation except two people, the mushahin and the murderer.

Abdullah told of the Prophet (peace be upon him) addressing the people and saying, "If anyone is guardian of an orphan who owns property, he must trade with it and not leave it till the sadaqah consumes it."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, adding that its isnad has been criticised because al-Muthanna ibn as-Sabbah was weak.
Abdullah told of two women, wearing gold bangles on their wrists, coming to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him), who asked them whether they paid zakat on them. On their replying that they did not, he asked them whether they wanted Allah to put two bangles of fire on them, and when they replied that they did not, he told them to pay the zakat due on them.
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying something similar to this tradition has been transmitted by al-Muhammad ibn as-Sabbah from Amr ibn Shu'ayb; but al-Muhammad ibn as-Sabbah and Ibn Lahi'ah are declared to be weak in tradition and nothing on this subject is soundly reported from the Prophet.
The Prophet sent someone to announce in the ravines of Makkah, "The sadaqah relating to the breaking of the fast is incumbent on every Muslim, male or female, freeman or slave, young or old, consisting of two mudds of wheat or such like, or a sa' of grain."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone glorifies Allah a hundred times in the morning and a hundred times in the evening, he will be like one who makes the Pilgrimage a hundred times. If anyone praises Allah a hundred times in the morning and a hundred times in the evening, he will be like one who provides a hundred horses as mounts for Allah's path. If anyone declares that Allah is the only Allah a hundred times in the morning and a hundred times in the evening, he will be like one who frees a hundred of the descendants of Isma'il who are slaves. If anyone declares Allah's greatness a hundred times in the morning and a hundred times in the evening, no one will bring more than he does that day, except one who says the same as he did or more."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The best supplication is the one on the day of Arafah, and the best thing which I and the prophets before me have said is, 'There is no god but Allah alone who has no partner; to Him belongs the dominion, to Him praise is due, and He is Omnipotent'."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Malik transmitted on the authority of Talhah ibn Ubaydullah up to "Who has no partner."
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was asked about hanging fruit and said, "If a needy person takes some and does not take a supply away in his garment he is not to be blamed, but he who carries any of it away is to be fined twice the value and punished; he who steals any of it after it has been put in the place where dates are dried is to have his hand cut off if their value reaches the price of a shield." Regarding stray camels and sheep he mentioned the same as others have done. He said he was asked about finds and replied, "If it is in a frequented road and a large town make the matter known for a year and if its owner comes give it to him, but if he does not it belongs to you. But if it is in a place which has been waste from ancient times, or if it is hidden treasure belonging to the pre-Islamic period it is subject to payment of the fifth." Nasa'i' transmitted it. AbuDawud transmitted it from Amr from "He was asked about finds" to the end.
Nasa'i transmitted it.
The Prophet said, "If a man commits fornication with a free woman or a slave woman the child is the product of fornication, and neither does he inherit nor may anyone inherit from him."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "He who has the right to inherit property inherits the property of an emancipated slave."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying that this is a tradition whose isnad is not strong.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If any man marries a woman and cohabits with her it is not lawful for him to marry her daughter, but if he does not cohabit with her he may marry her daughter. If any man marries a woman it is not lawful of him to marry her mother whether he has cohabited with her or not."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a tradition which is not sound with respect to its isnad. It is transmitted only by Ibn Lahi'ah and al-Muthanna ibn as-Sabbah on the authority of Amr ibn Shu'ayb, and they are both declared to be weak in tradition.
Allah's Messenger said, "No descendant of Adam may make a vow about what he does not possess, or set free what he does not possess, or divorce what he does not possess."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, and AbuDawud added, "or sell what he does not possess."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "There are four types of women with whom there can be no cursing: a Christian woman married to a Muslim, a Jewess married to a Muslim, a free woman married to a slave, and a slave woman married to a freeman."
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Suraqah ibn Malik said he was present when Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) allowed a father to take retaliation on his son, but did not allow a son to take retaliation on his father.
Tirmidhi transmitted it, declaring it to be weak.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone kills a man deliberately he is to be handed over to the relatives of the one who has been killed. If they wish they may kill him, but if they wish they may accept compensation, which is thirty she-camels in their fourth year, thirty in their fifth year, and forty pregnant she-camels. Any arrangement they make with him is for them to decide."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Proof lies on the plaintiff and the oath is to be sworn by the defendant."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said in the course of his sermon, "Observe fully the alliance made in the pre-Islamic period, for it, i.e. Islam, will only make it stronger; but make no new alliances in Islam."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone kills a sparrow or anything greater wrongfully, Allah will question him about killing it." On being asked what was the right way he replied, "To cut its throat and eat it, but not to cut off its head and throw it away."

Abdullah saw Allah's Messenger drink both standing and sitting.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah likes the mark of His favour to be seen on His servant."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Eat, drink, give sadaqah and wear clothes so long as neither prodigality nor pride is mixed up with it."
Ahmad, Nasa'i and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to take something off the side and the bottom of his beard.
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He does not belong to us who imitates other people. Do not imitate the Jews or the Christians, for the Jews' salutation is to make a gesture with the fingers and the Christians' salutation is to make a gesture with the palms of the hands."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying its isnad is weak.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The proud will be resurrected like specks on the Day of Resurrection in the form of men, covered all round with ignominy. They will be driven to a prison in Jahannam called Bawlas with the hottest fire rising over them, and will be given to drink the liquid of the inhabitants of Hell, which is tinat al-khabal.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever has two characteristics will be recorded by Allah as grateful and showing endurance. He who regarding his religion considers his superior and copies him, and regarding his worldly interests considers his inferior and praises Allah for the bounty He has bestowed on him, will be recorded by Allah as grateful and showing endurance. But he who regarding his religion considers his inferior, and regarding his worldly interests considers his superior and grieves over what has passed him by will not be recorded by Allah as grateful and showing endurance."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) pointed to something like a bowl and said, "If a piece of lead like this were sent from Heaven to Earth, which is journey of five hundred years, it would reach the earth before night; and if it were sent from the top of the chain it would travel forty years night and day before reaching its foot (or its bottom)."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Which people's faith please you most?" On receiving the reply that they were the angels he said, "But why should they not believe when they are with their Lord?" It was suggested that they were the prophets to which he replied, "Why should they not believe when inspiration descends on them?" The people suggested themselves and he said, "Why should you not believe when I am among you?" He told that Allah's Messenger then said, "The people whose faith pleases me most are people who will come after my time who will find sheets containing a Book in whose contents they will believe."
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Dala'il an-Nubuwwah.
Verily the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) recited the wordsof Allah, the Great and Glorious, that Ibrahim uttered: My Lord!Lo! they have led many of mankind astray: "But whoso followethme, he verily is of me" (al-Qur'an, xiv.35), and Jesus (peace beupon him) said: "If thou punisheth them, lo! they are Thy slaves,and if Thou forgiveth them--verily Thou art the Mighty, the Wise"(al-Qur'an, v.117). Then he raised his hands and said: O Lord,my Ummah, my Ummah, and wept. So Allah, the High and theExalted, said: O Gabriel, go to Muhammad (though your Lord knowsit fully well) and ask him: what makes thee weep? So Gabriel (p.)came to him and asked him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him) informed him of what he had said (though Allah knew itfully well). Upon this Allah said: O Gabriel, go to Muhammad andsay: Verily We shall please thee with regard to your Ummah andshall not displease thee.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When you hear theMu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me,for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive tenblessings from Allah: then beg from Allah al-Wasilah for me,which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah'sServants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asksthat I be given the Wasilah, he will be assured of myintercession.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The time of thenoon prayer is when the sun passes the meridian and a man'sshadow is the same (length) as his height, (and it lasts) as longas the time for the afternoon prayer has not come; the time forthe afternoon prayer is as long as the sun has not become pale;the time of the evening prayer is as long as the twilight has notended; the time of the night prayer is up to the middle of theaverage night, and the time of the morning prayer is from theappearance of dawn, as long as the sun has not risen; but whenthe sun rises, refrain from prayer, for it rises between thehorns of the devil.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He is successful whohas accepted Islam, who has been provided with sufficient for hiswant and been made contented by Allah with what He has given him.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The whole world is aprovision, and the best object of benefit of the world is thepious woman.
It has been narrated on the authority of AbdurRahman ibn AbduRabb al-Ka'ba who said: I entered the mosque when Abdullah ibnAmr ibn al-'As was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah and thepeople had gathered around him. I betook myself to them and satnear him. (Now) Abdullah said: I accompanied the Messenger ofAllah (peace be upon him) on a journey. We halted at a place.Some of us began to erect their tents, others began to competewith one another in shooting, and others began to graze theirbeasts, when an announcer of the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him) announced that the people should gather together forprayer. So we gathered around the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him). He said: It was the duty of every Prophet that hasgone before me to guide his followers to what he knew was goodfor them and warn them against what he knew was bad for them.However, this Ummah of yours has its days of peace and (security)at the beginning of its career, and in the last phase of itsexistence it will be afflicted with trials and with thingsdisagreeable to you. (In this phase of the Ummah), there will betremendous trials, one after the other, each making the previousone dwindle into insignificance. When they are afflicted with atrial, the believer will say: This is going to bring about mydestruction. When (the trial) is over, they will be afflictedwith another trial and the believer will say: This surely isgoing to be my end. Whoever wishes to be delivered from the Fireand enter the Garden should die with faith in Allah and the LastDay and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated bythem. He who swears allegiance to a Caliph should give him thepledge of his hand and the sincerity of his heart (i.e. submit tohim both outwardly as well as inwardly). He should obey him tothe best of his capacity. If another man comes forward (as aclaimant to Caliphate), disputing his authority, they (theMuslims) should behead the latter. The narrator says: I cameclose to him (Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As) and said to him: Canyou say on oath that you heard it from the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him)? He pointed with his hands to his ears andhis heart and said: My ears heard it and my mind retained it. Isaid to him: This cousin of yours, Mu'awiyah, orders us toconsume our wealth unjustly among ourselves and to kill oneanother, while Allah says: "O ye who believe, do not consume yourwealth among yourselves unjustly, unless it be trade based onmutual agreement, and do not kill yourselves. Verily, God isMerciful to you" (iv.29). The narrator says that (on hearingthis) Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As kept quiet for a while and thensaid: Obey him in so far as he is obedient to God; and disobeyhim in matters involving disobedience to God.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A troop ofsoldiers who fight in the way of Allah and get their share of thebooty receive in advance two-thirds of their reward in theHereafter and only one-third will remain (to their credit). Ifthey do not receive any booty, they will get their full reward.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) saw me wearing two clothesdyed in saffron, whereupon he said: These are the clothes(usually worn by) the non-believers, so do not wear them.
Some persons from Banu Hisham entered the house of Asma' daughterof Umays when AbuBakr also entered (and she was at that time hiswife). He (AbuBakr) saw it and disapproved of it and he made amention of that to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) andsaid: I did not see but good only (in my wife). Thereupon Allah'sMessenger (peace be upon him) said: Verily Allah has made herimmune from all this. Then Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)stood on the pulpit and said: After this day no man should enterthe house of another person in his absence, but only when he isaccompanied by one person or two persons.
I heard Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) as saying: Allahordained the measures (of quality) of the creation fifty thousandyears before He created the heavens and the earth, as His Thronewas upon water.
Abdullah heard Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) as saying:Verily, the hearts of all the sons of Adam are between the twofingers out of the fingers of the Compassionate Lord as oneheart. He turns that to any (direction) He likes. Then Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) said: O Allah, the Turner of thehearts, turn our hearts to Thine obedience.
I committed to memory a hadith from Allah's Apostle (peace beupon him) and I did not forget it after I had heard Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) said: The first sign (out of thesigns of the appearance of the Dajjal) would be the appearance ofthe sun from the west, the appearance of the beast before thepeople in the forenoon and which of the two happens first, thesecond one would follow immediately after that.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: How would you be, Opeople, when Persia and Rome would be conquered for you?AbdurRahman b Awf said: We would say as Allah has commanded usand we would express our gratitude to Allah. Thereupon Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) said: Nothing else besides it? Youwould (in fact) vie with one another, then you would feeljealous, then your relations would be estranged and then you willbear enmity against one another, or something to the same effect.Then you would go to the poor emigrants and would make some themasters of the others.
AbdurRahman al-Hubuli said: I heard someone asking Abdullah ibnAmr ibn al-'As: Are we not among the destitute of the emigrants?Abdullah said to him: Have you a spouse with whom you live? Hesaid: Yes. He again said: Then you are among the rich. He said: Ihave a servant also. Thereupon he (Abdullah ibn Amr ibn 'As)said: Then you are among the kings. AbuAbdurRahman reported thatthree people came to Abdullah ibn Amr ibn 'As while I was sittingwith him and they said: By Allah, we have nothing with us in theform of either provisions, riding-animals or wealth. Thereupon hesaid to them: I am prepared to do whatever you like. If you cometo us, we shall give you that which Allah will make available foryou, and if you like I shall mention your case to the ruler. Ifyou like you can show patience also, for I have heard Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) saying: The destitute among theemigrants will precede the rich emigrants by forty years inentering Paradise on the Day of Resurrection. Thereupon theysaid: We shall show patience, and then, not ask for anything.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "How will you do when you are left among dregs of mankind whose covenants and guarantees have been impaired, who have disagreed and become thus?" interwining his fingers. He asked what he ordered him to do and he replied, "Keep to what you approve, abandon what you disapprove, attend to your own affairs and avoid the generality." One version says, "Keep to your house, control your tongue, accept what you approve, abandon what you disapprove, attend to your own affairs and leave alone the affairs of the generality."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, calling it sahih.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) led us in prayer prayingtwo rak'ahs. When he stood up and did not sit (at the end of tworak'ahs) the people stood up along with him. When he finished theprayerand we expect him to give the salutation, he said: "Allahis most great." While sitting and made two prostrations beforegiving the salutation. Then he gave it.
Yazid ibn Khumayr ar-Rahbi said: Abdullah ibn Busr, the Companionof the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) came out along withthe people on the day of the breaking of the fast or on the dayof sacrifice (to offer the prayer). He disliked the delay of theimam, and said: We would finish (our 'Id prayer) at this moment,that is, at the time of forenoon.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) had a bowl called gharra'. It wascarried by four persons. When the sun rose high, and theyperformed the forenoon prayer, the bowl in which tharid wasprepared was brought, and the people gathered round it. When theywere numerous, the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said:Allah has made me a respectable servant, and He did not make mean obstinate tyrant. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)said: Eat from it sides and leave its top, the blessing will beconferred on it
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The time between the greatwar and the conquest of the city (Constantinople) will be sixyears, and the Dajjal (Antichrist) will come forth in theseventh.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) came to somepeople's door, he did not face it squarely, but faced the rightor left corner, and said: Peace be upon you! peace be upon you!That was because there were no curtains on the doors of the houseat that time.
A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): Messenger of Allah, the ordinances of Islam appear to me a multitude of affairs, so kindly tell me something to which I should hold fast. He answered him: Let thy tongue be constantly occupied with the remembrance of Allah.

Abdullah ibn Busr told of a desert Arab coming to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asking who was best among men, to which he replied, "Happy is he whose life is long and whose deeds are good." He asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) what deed was most excellent, and he replied, "That you should leave the world with the mention of Allah fresh on your tongue."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Abdullah ibn Busr told of a man saying, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) the ordinances of Islam are too many for me, so tell me something to which I may cling." He replied, "Your tongue will continue to be supple by making mention of Allah."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it. Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Blessed is he who finds a very many requests for pardon in his record."
Ibn Majah transmitted it, and Nasa'i transmitted in Amal yawm wal-laylah.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came to my father and webrought to him a meal and a preparation from dates, cheese andbutter. He ate out of that. He was then given dates which he atebut he placed their stones between his fingers, and he joined hisforefinger and middle finger. Shu'bah reported: I think that thishadith God's willing also contains (these words): Putting of datestones between two fingers. Then a drink was brought for him andhe drank it, and then gave it to one who was on his right side.He (the narrator) said: My father took hold of the rein of hisriding animal and requested him to supplicate for us. Thereuponhe said: O Allah, bless them in what Thou hast provided them as asustenance; and forgive them and have mercy upon them.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The best person is he who has a long span of life and whose action and conduct are good.

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) came to visit us and weoffered him butter and dates, for he liked butter and dates.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone says in themorning: "O Allah! whatever favour has come to me, it comes fromThee alone Who has no partner; to Thee praise is due andthanksgiving,'! he will have expressed full thanksgiving for theday; and if anyone says the same in the evening, he will haveexpressed full thanksgiving for the night.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone cuts thelote-tree, Allah brings him headlong into Hell.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked: which is the bestaction? He replied: To stand in prayer for a long time.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) saw AbuBakr and Umar and said, "These are hearing and sight."
Tirmidhi transmitted it in mursal form.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A dirham which a man knowingly receives in usury is more serious than thirty-six acts of fornication." Ibn Abbas's version adds that he said, "Hell is more fitting for him whose flesh is nourished by what is unlawful."
Ahmad and Daraqutni transmitted it. Bayhaqi transmitted in Shu'ab al-Iman on the authority of Ibn Abbas.
