I was in the company of Mu'awiyah when his Mu'adhdhin announced Adhan and Mu'awiyah repeated that which his Mu'adhdhin had uttered till he uttered `hasten to the prayer', he (Mu'awiyah) said, `there is no might and no power by that of Allah'; and when he pronounced, `hasten to success', he said `there is no might or power but that of Allah, the Exalted and Mighty' and he repeated that which Mu'adhdhin had uttered. Then said: I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say that.

Ali, Fadl and Usamah ibn Zayd washed the Apostle of Allah (peacebe upon him) and they put him in his grave. Marhab or IbnAbuMarhab told me that they also made AbdurRahman ibn Awf jointhem. When Ali became free, he said: The People of the man servehim.
I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) at Mina givingsermon on a mule and wearing a red garment, while Ali wasannouncing.
Ibn Abbas (who was at that time a boy) said, "Allah's Apostle came to a grave and the people said, 'He or she was buried yesterday.' " Ibn Abbas added, "We aligned behind the Prophet and he led the funeral prayer of the deceased."
I heard An-Nu'man bin Bashir on the pulpit saying, "My father gave me a gift but 'Amra bint Rawaha (my mother) said that she would not agree to it unless he made Allah's Apostle as a witness to it. So, my father went to Allah's Apostle and said, 'I have given a gift to my son from 'Amra bint Rawaha, but she ordered me to make you as a witness to it, O Allah's Apostle!' Allah's Apostle asked, 'Have you given (the like of it) to everyone of your sons?' He replied in the negative. Allah's Apostle said, 'Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children.' My father then returned and took back his gift."
Whenever Ibn 'Umar greeted the son of Ja'far, he used to say (to him), "Assalam 'Alaika (i.e. peace be on you) O the son of two-winged person."
We were in our country when flags and banners were raised. Isaid: What is this? The (the people) said: This is the banner ofthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him). So I came to him. Hewas (sitting) under a tree. A sheet of cloth was spread for himand he was sitting on it. His Companions were gathered aroundhim. I sat with them. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)mentioned illness and said: When a believer is afflicted byillness and Allah cures him of it, it serves as an atonement forhis previous sins and a warning to him for the future. But whena hypocrite becomes ill and is then cured, he is like a camelwhich has been tethered and then let loose by its owners, butdoes not know why they tethered it and why they let it loose. Aman from among those around him asked: Apostle of Allah, what areillnesses? I swear by Allah, I never fell ill.The Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) said: Get up and leave us. You do notbelong to our number. When we were with him, a man came to him.He had a sheet of cloth and something in his hand. He turned hisattention to him and said: Apostle of Allah, when I saw you, Iturned towards you. I saw a group of trees and heard the sound offledglings. I took them and put them in my garment. Their motherthen came and began to hover round my head. I showed them to her,and she fell on them. I wrapped them with my garment. They arenow with me. He said: Put them away from you. So I put themaway, but their mother stayed with them. The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) said to his companions: Are you surprised atthe affection of the mother for her young? They said: Yes,Apostle of Allah. He said: I swear by Him Who has sent me withthe Truth, Allah is more affectionate to His servants than amother to her young ones. Take them back put them and where youtook them from when their mother should have been with them. Sohe took them back.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone finds an animalwhose owners were helpless to provide fodder to it and so theyturned it out (of their house), and he took it and looked afterit, it will belong to him.
Allah's Apostle did not leave a Dinar or a Dirham or a male or a female slave. He left only his white mule on which he used to ride, and his weapons, and a piece of land which he gave in charity for the needy travelers.
I saw the Prophet on his Mount praying Nawafil by nodding his head, whatever direction he faced, but Allah's Apostle never did the same in offering the compulsory prayers. Narrated Salim: At night 'Abdullah bin 'Umar used to offer the prayer on the back of his animal during the journey and never cared about the direction he faced. Ibn 'Umar said, "Allah's Apostle used to offer the optional prayer on the back of his mount facing any direction and also used to pray the Witr on it but never offered the compulsory prayer on it."
The Prophet said, "Whenever you see a funeral procession, stand up till the procession goes ahead of you." Al-Humaidi added, "Till the coffin leaves you behind or is put down."
The Prophet said, "If any one of you see a funeral procession and he is not going along with it, then he should stand and remain standing till he gets behind it, or it leaves him behind, or the coffin is put down before it goes ahead of him. "
that his father said, "In the year of Hajjatal-Wada', the Prophet paid me a visit while I was suffering from an ailment that had brought me to the verge of death. I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! My sickness has reduced me to the (bad) state as you see, and I am a rich man, but have no heirs except one daughter. Shall I give 2/3 of my property in charity?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'Then 1/2 of it?' He said, 'Even 1/3 is too much, for, to leave your inheritors wealthy is better than to leave them in poverty, begging from people. And (know that) whatever you spend in Allah's Cause, you will get reward for it, even for the morsel of food which you put in your wife's mouth.' I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Will I be left behind my companions (in Mecca)?' He said, 'If you remain behind, whatever good deed you will do for Allah's Sake, will raise and upgrade you to a higher position (in Allah's Sight). May be you will live longer so that some people may benefit by you, and some others (pagans) may get harmed by you. O Allah! Complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them on their heels; but (we pity) the poor Sa'd bin Khaula (not the above mentioned Sa'd) (died in Mecca)." Allah's Apostle lamented (or pitied) for him as he died in Mecca. (See Hadith No. 693, Vol. 5)
That his father said, "In the year of the last Hajj of the Prophet I became seriously ill and the Prophet used to visit me inquiring about my health. I told him, 'I am reduced to this state because of illness and I am wealthy and have no inheritors except a daughter. (In this narration the name of 'Amir bin Sad is mentioned and in fact it is a mistake; the narrator is 'Aisha bint Sad bin Abi Waqqas). Should I give two-thirds of my property in charity?' He said, 'No.' I asked, 'Half?' He said, 'No.' then he added, 'One-third, and even one-third is much. You'd better leave your inheritors wealthy rather than leaving them poor, begging others. You will get a reward for whatever you spend for Allah's sake, even for what you put in your wife's mouth.' I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Will I be left alone after my companions have gone?' He said, 'If you are left behind, whatever good deeds you will do will upgrade you and raise you high. And perhaps you will have a long life so that some people will be benefited by you while others will be harmed by you. O Allah! Complete the emigration of my companions and do not turn them renegades.' But Allah's Apostle felt sorry for poor Sad bin Khaula as he died in Mecca." (but Sad bin Abi Waqqas lived long after the Prophet (p.b.u.h).)
That he heard Usama bin Zaid speaking to Sa'd, saying, "Allah's Apostle mentioned the plague and said, 'It is a means of punishment with which some nations were punished and some of it has remained, and it appears now and then. So whoever hears that there is an outbreak of plague in some land, he should not go to that land, and if the plague breaks out in the land where one is already present, one should not run away from that land, escaping from the plague.' "

If you accept something, we shall accept it,and if you disapprove of something, we shall disapprove of it.Isaid: Yes. So I proceeded until I came to the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him). I liked his motive and my people embracedIslam. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) wrote thedocument for Umayr Dhu Marran. He also sent Malik ibn Murarahar-Rahawi to all the (people of) Yemen. So Akk Dhu Khaywanembraced Islam. Akk was told: Go to the Apostle of Allah (peacebe upon him), and obtain his protection for your town andproperty. He therefore came (to him) and the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) wrote a document for him: "In the name ofAllah, Most Beneficent, Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the Apostleof Allah, to Akk Dhu Khaywan. If he is true his land, propertyand slave, he has the security and the protection of Allah, andMuhammad, the Apostle of Allah. Written by Khalid ibn Sa'id ibnal-'As."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When sin is done in theearth, he who sees it and disapproves of it will be taken likeone who was not present, but he who is not present and approvesof it will be like him who sees.
AbuIshaq reported on the authority of Silah: We were with Ammaron the day when the appearance of the moon was doubtful. (Themeat of) goat was brought to him. Some people kept aloof from(eating) it. Ammar said: He who keeps fast on this day disobeysAbulQasim (i.e. the Prophet) (peace be upon him).

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) encamped at Ulatal-Jaysh and Aisha was in his company. Her necklace of onyx ofZifar was broken (and fell somewhere). The people were detainedto make a search for that necklace until the dawn broke. Therewas no water with the people. Therefore AbuBakr became angry withher and said: You detained the people and they have no water withthem. Thereupon Allah, the Exalted, sent down revelation aboutit to His Apostle (peace be upon him) granting concession topurify themselves with pure earth. Then the Muslims stood up withthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and struck the groundwith their hands and then they raised their hands, and did nottake any earth (in their hands). Then they wiped with them theirfaces and hands up to the shoulders, and from their palms up tothe armpits.
They (the Companions of the Prophet) wiped with pure earth (theirhands and face) to offer the dawn prayer in the company of theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him). The tradition mentioned above (No. 4164) has also beentransmitted by Ammar ibn Yasir through a different chain ofnarrators. This version has: Ammar said: I used khaluq. The firstversion is more perfect; it mentioned "taking a bath". Ibn Jurayjsaid: I said to Umar (a transmitter): They might be wearing ihram(robe of pilgrim)? He replied: No, they were residents.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The angels do not come nearthree: the dead body of the unbeliever, one who smears himselfwith khaluq, and the one who is sexually defiled except that heperforms ablution.
Ata' ibn as-Sa'ib told that his father said: Ammar ibn Yasir led us in a prayer and did so in brief form. One of the people complained that he had shortened the prayer and conducted it briefly, but he replied that that would cause him no harm, for he had used in it various supplications he had heard from Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)." When he got up to depart one of the people followed him (Ata' explaining that this was his father although he made a vague reference to himself) and asked him about the supplication, whereupon he came and informed the people of it as follows: `O Allah,by Thy knowledge of the unseen and Thy power to create, grant me life as long as thou knowest life to be best for me, and take me when thou knowest death to be best for me. O Allah, I ask Thee for fear of Thee both within my secret heart and openly. I ask Thee for the word of truth in pleasure and anger; I ask Thee for moderation both in poverty and riches; I ask Thee for felicity which does not pass away. I ask Thee for comfort which is not cut off. I ask Thee for satisfaction with what is decreed. I ask Thee for a pleasant life after death. I ask Thee for the pleasure of looking at Thy face, and longing to meet Thee in a state in which distress does not cause harm or testing lead astray. O Allah, beautify us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are rightly guided."
Nasa'i transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The table was sent down from Heaven with bread and meat, and they were commanded not to be unfaithful nor to store up for the morrow. But they were unfaithful, sorted up and laid by for the morrow, so they were changed into apes and swine."

Ammar delivered to us (the audience) the sermon. It was short andeloquent. When he (Ammar) descended (from the pulpit) we said tohim: O AbulYaqzan, you have delivered a short and eloquentsermon. Would that you had lengthened (the sermon). He said: Ihave heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as saying:The lengthening of prayer by a man and the shortness of thesermon is the sign of his understanding (of faith). So lengthenthe prayer and shorten the sermon, for there is charm (inprecise) expression.
My father saw 'Amr bin Abi Hasan asking 'Abdullah bin Zaid about the ablution of the Prophet. 'Abdullah bin Zaid asked for earthenware pot containing water and in front of them performed ablution like that of the Prophet. He poured water from the pot over his hand and washed his hands thrice and then he put his hands in the pot and rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out with three handfuls of water. Again he put his hand in the water and washed his face thrice and washed his forearms up to the elbows twice; and then put his hands in the water and then passed them over his head by bringing them to the front and then to the rear of the head once, and then he washed his feet up to the ankles.
I heard Jabir bin 'Abdullah saying, "A man passed through the mosque carrying arrows. Allah's Apostle said to him, 'Hold them by their heads.'"
Jabir bin 'Abdullah said, "Mu'adh bin Jabal used to pray with the Prophet and then go to lead his people in prayer. Once he led the 'Isha' prayer and recited Surat 'Al-Baqra.' Somebody left the prayer and Mu'adh criticized him. The news reached the Prophet and he said to Mu'adh, 'You are putting the people to trial,' and repeated it thrice (or said something similar) and ordered him to recite two medium Suras of Mufassal." ('Amr said that he had forgotten the names of those Suras).
I heard Abu Ash-sha'tha' Jabir saying, "I heard Ibn Abbas saying, 'I offered with Allah's Apostle eight Rakat (of Zuhr and 'Asr prayers) together and seven Rakat (the Maghrib and the 'Isha' prayers) together.' " I said, "O Abu Ash-shatha! I think he must have prayed the Zuhr late and the 'Asr early; the 'Isha early and the Maghrib late." Abu Ash-sha'tha' said, "I also think so." (See Hadith No. 518 Vol. 1).
We asked Ibn Umar: "May a man have sexual relations with his wife during the Umra before performing Tawaf between Safa and Marwa?" He said, "Allah's Apostle arrived (in Mecca) and circumambulated the Kaba seven times, then offered two Rakat behind Maqam Ibrahim (the station of Abraham), then performed Tawaf between Safa and Marwa." Ibn Umar added, "Verily! In Allah's Apostle you have a good example." And I asked Jabir bin Abdullah (the same question), and he replied, "You should not go near your wives (have sexual relations) till you have finished Tawaf between Safa and Marwa."
Here (i.e. in Mecca) there was a man called Nawwas and he had camels suffering from the disease of excessive and unquenchable thirst. Ibn 'Umar went to the partner of Nawwas and bought those camels. The man returned to Nawwas and told him that he had sold those camels. Nawwas asked him, "To whom have you sold them?" He replied, "To such and such Sheikh." Nawwas said, "Woe to you; By Allah, that Sheikh was Ibn 'Umar." Nawwas then went to Ibn 'Umar and said to him, "My partner sold you camels suffering from the disease of excessive thirst and he had not known you." Ibn 'Umar told him to take them back. When Nawwas went to take them, Ibn 'Umar said to him, "Leave them there as I am happy with the decision of Allah's Apostle that there is no oppression."
Concerning the Waqf of 'Umar: It was not sinful of the trustee (of the Waqf) to eat or provide his friends from it, provided the trustee had no intention of collecting fortune (for himself). Ibn 'Umar was the manager of the trust of 'Umar and he used to give presents from it to those with whom he used to stay at Mecca.
I said to Tawus, "I wish you would give up Mukhabara (sharecropping), for the people say that the Prophet forbade it." On that Tawus replied, "O 'Amr! I give the land to sharecroppers and help them. No doubt; the most learned man, namely Ibn 'Abbas told me that the Prophet had not forbidden it but said, 'It is more beneficial for one to give his land free to one's brother than to charge him a fixed rental."
When I mentioned it (i.e. the narration of Rafi 'bin Khadij: no. 532) to Tawus, he said, "It is permissible to rent the land for cultivation, for Ibn 'Abbas said, 'The Prophet did not forbid that, but said: One had better give the land to one's brother gratis rather than charge a certain amount for it.' "
Ibn 'Abbas recited: "No doubt! They fold up their breasts in order to hide from Him. Surely! Even when they cover themselves with their garments..." (11.5)

I said to Jabir bin Zaid, "The people claim that Allah's Apostle forbade the eating of donkey's meat." He said, "Al-Hakam bin 'Amr Al-Ghifari used to say so when he was with us, but Ibn 'Abbas, the great religious learned man, refused to give a final verdict and recited: 'Say: I find not in that which has been inspired to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be carrion, blood poured forth or the flesh of swine..' - (6.145)
Ibn 'Umar said, "By Allah, I have not put a brick over a brick (i.e. constructed a building) or planted any date-palm tree since the death of the Prophet." Sufyan (the sub narrator) said, "I told this narration (of Ibn 'Umar) to one of his (Ibn 'Umar's) relatives, and he said, 'By Allah, he did build (something).' " Sufyan added, "I said, 'He must have said (the above narration) before he built.' "

I heard Jabir saying, "That was a coptic slave who died in the same year."
The Prophet deputed me to lead the Army of Dhat-as-Salasil. I came to him and said, "Who is the most beloved person to you?" He said, " 'Aisha." I asked, "Among the men?" He said, "Her father." I said, "Who then?" He said, "Then 'Umar bin Al-Khattab." He then named other men.
I heard the Prophet saying openly not secretly, "The family of Abu so-and-so (i.e. Talib) are not among my protectors." 'Amr said that there was a blank space (1) in the Book of Muhammad bin Ja'far. That he heard Allah's Apostle saying, "If a judge gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is correct (i.e. agrees with Allah and His Apostle's verdict) he will receive a double reward, and if he gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is wrong, (i.e. against that of Allah and His Apostle) even then he will get a reward ."
Zainab, the wife of 'Abdullah said, "I was in the Mosque and saw the Prophet (p.b.u.h) saying, 'O women! Give alms even from your ornaments.' "Zainab used to provide for 'Abdullah and those orphans who were under her protection. So she said to 'Abdullah, "Will you ask Allah's Apostle whether it will be sufficient for me to spend part of the Zakat on you and the orphans who are under my protection?" He replied "Will you yourself ask Allah's Apostle?" (Zainab added): "So I went to the Prophet and I saw there an Ansari woman who was standing at the door (of the Prophet ) with a similar problem as mine. Bilal passed by us and we asked him, 'Ask the Prophet whether it is permissible for me to spend (the Zakat) on my husband and the orphans under my protection.' And we requested Bilal not to inform the Prophet about us. So Bilal went inside and asked the Prophet regarding our problem. The Prophet (p.b.u.h) asked, "Who are those two?" Bilal replied that she was Zainab. The Prophet said, "Which Zainab?" Bilal said, "The wife of 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud)." The Prophet said, "Yes, (it is sufficient for her) and she will receive a double rewards (for that): One for helping relatives, and the other for giving Zakat."
(The brother of the wife of Allah's Apostle. Juwaira bint Al-Harith) When Allah's Apostle died, he did not leave any Dirham or Dinar (i.e. money), a slave or a slave woman or anything else except his white mule, his arms and a piece of land which he had given in charity.
The Prophet did not leave anything behind him after his death except a white mule, his arms and a piece of land which he left to be given in charity.
The Prophet did not leave behind him after his death, anything except his arms, his white mule, and a piece of land at Khaibar which he left to be given in charity .
The Prophet did not leave anything (after his death) except his arms, a white mule, and a (piece of) land which he had given as sadaqa.
Anas said, "The Prophet used to perform ablution for every prayer." I asked Anas, "What you used to do?" Anas replied, "We used to pray with the same ablution until we break it with Hadath."
