AbuQatadah heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say:Beware of swearing, it produces a ready sale for a commodity, butblots out the blessing.
Allah , the Exalted said: I made five times' prayers obligatoryon your people, and I took a guarantee that if anyone observesthem regularly at their times, I shall admit him to Paradise; ifanyone does not offer them regularly, there is no such guaranteeof Mine for him.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) took from a man as a loan ayoung camel (below six years). Then the camel of Sadaqah werebrought to him. He ordered AbuRafi to return to that person theyoung camel (as a return to the loan). AbuRafi' returned to himand said: I did not find among them but better camels above theage of six. He (the Prophet) said: Give that to him for the bestmen are those who are best in paying off the debt.
The Quraysh sent me to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him),and when I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him), Islamwas cast into my heart, so I said: Apostle of Allah, I swear byAllah, I shall never return to them. The Apostle of Allah (peacebe upon him) replied: I do not break a covenant or imprisonmessengers, but return, and if you feel the same as you do justnow, come back. So I went away, and then came to the Prophet(peace be upon him) and accepted Islam.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent a man of the Banu Makhzum tocollect sadaqah. He said to AbuRafi': Accompany me so that youmay get some of it. He said: (I cannot take it) until I go to theProphet (peace be upon him) and ask him. Then he went to him andasked him. He said: The sadaqah is not lawful for us, and theclient of a people is treated as one of them.
Sa'id ibn AbuSa'id al-Maqburi reported on the authority of hisfather that he saw AbuRafi' the freed slave of the Prophet (peacebe upon him), passing by Hasan ibn Ali (Allah be pleased withthem) when he was standing offering his prayer. He had tied theback knot of his hair. AbuRafi' untied it. Hasan turned to himwith anger, AbuRafi' said to him: Concentrate on your prayer anddo not be angry: I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: This is the seat of the devil, referring to the back knotof the hair.
One day the Prophet (peace be upon him) had intercourse with allhis wives. He took a bath after each intercourse. I asked him:Apostle of Allah, why don't you make it a single bath? Hereplied: This is more purifying, better and cleaning.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Let me not find one of youreclining on his couch when he hears something regarding me whichI have commanded or forbidden and saying: We do not know. What wefound in Allah's Book we have followed.
I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) uttering the callto prayer (Adhan) in the ear of al-Hasan ibn Ali when Fatimahgave birth to him.
AbuRafi' was presented with a sheep so he put it in an earthen pot (and placed it on the fire to be cooked). Then Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) happened to come there and he said: AbuRafi', what is this? He said: Allah's Messenger, it is sheep which was presented to us and I have cooked it in the earthen pot. He said: AbuRafi', give me the foreleg. So I gave him the foreleg. He said: Give me the other foreleg, and I gave him the other foreleg. He then said: Give me the other foreleg, whereupon AbuRafi' said: Allah's Messenger, the sheep has only two forelegs. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Had you remained silent you would have managed to give me one foreleg after another as long as you had observed silence. He then called for water, rinsed his mouth, washed the tips of his fingers, then got up and observed prayer. Then he came back to them and found that they had cold meat. He ate, then entered the mosque, observed prayer and did not touch water.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) married Maymunah when he was not in the sacred state and cohabited with her when he was not in the sacred state, and I was the messenger between them.
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying that this is a hasan tradition.
I testify that I used to roast the liver of the goat for theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and then he offered prayerbut did not perform ablution.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) did not command me toobserve halt at al-Abtah when he departed from Mina, but I cameand set up his (the Prophet's) tent (of my own accord); and he(Allah's Apostle) came and observed halt. This hadith is narratedthrough another chain of transmitters from AbuRafi who was (incharge) of the luggage of Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him).
AbulHusayn, al-Haytham ibn Shafi said: I and a companion of minecalled AbuAmir, a man from al-Ma'afir went to perform prayer inBayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Their preacher was a man of Azdcalled AbuRayhanah, who was a companion of the Prophet (peace beupon him). AbulHusayn said: my companion went to the mosquebefore me. I went there after him and sat beside him. He askedme: Did you hear the preaching of AbuRayhanah?I said: No. Hesaid: I heard him say: The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)forbade ten things: Sharpening the ends of the teeth, tattooing,plucking hair, men sleeping together without an under garment,women sleeping together without an under-garment, men puttingsilk at the hem of their garments like the Persians, or puttingsilk on their shoulders like the Persians, plundering, riding onpanther skins, wearing signet rings, except in the case of one inauthority.
A man of Banu Amir said: Apostle of Allah, my father is very old,he cannot perform hajj and umrah himself nor can be ride on amount. He said: Perform hajj and umrah on behalf of your father.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The vision flutters over aman as long as it is not interpreted , but when it isinterpreted, it settles. And I think he said: Tell it only to onewho loves (i.e. friend) or one who has judgment.
I asked: Apostle of Allah! will each one of us see his Lord? IbnMu'adh's version has: "being alone with Him, on the Day ofResurrection? And what sign is there is His creation?" Hereplied: AbuRazin! does each one of you not see the moon? IbnMu'adh's version has: "on the night when it is full, being alonewith it?" Then the agreed version goes: I said: Yes. He said:Allah is more great. Ibn Mu'adh's version has: It is only part ofAllah's creation, but Allah is more glorious and greater.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him said,, "A believer's vision is a forty-sixth part of prophecy. It flutters over a man as long as he does not talk about it, but when he talks about it it settles." And I think he said, "Talk only to a friend or one with sound judgment."
Tirmidhi transmitted it. In AbuDawud's version he said, "The vision flutters over a man as long as it is not interpreted, but when it is interpreted it settles." And I think he said, "Tell it only to one who loves him or one who has judgment."
I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he was deliveringthe sermon, and I said: Messenger of Allah, here is a strangerand he wants to learn about this religion and he does not knowwhat this religion is.The Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) looked at me and left his sermon till he came to me, and hewas given a chair and I thought that its legs were made of iron.The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sat in it and he beganto teach me what Allah had taught him. He then came (to thepulpit) for his sermon and completed it to the end.
I went with my father to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and sawtwo green garments over him.
I went with my father to the Prophet (peace be upon him). He hadlocks hanging down as far as the lobes of the ears stained withhenna, and he was wearing two green garments.
This version adds (to the previous hadith No 4194): My fathersaid to him (the Prophet): Show me what is on your back, for I ama physician. He (the Prophet) said: You are only a soother. Itsphysician is He Who has credit it.
I and my father came to the Prophet (peace be upon him). He saidto a man or to my father: Who is this? He replied: He is my son.He said: Do not commit a crime on him. He had stained his beardwith henna.
I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) with my father. TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then asked my father: Isthis your son? He replied: Yes, by the Lord of the Ka'bah. Heagain said: Is it true? He said: I bear witness to it. TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then smiled for myresemblance with my father, and for the fact that my father tookan oath upon me. He then said: He will not bring evil on you, norwill you bring evil on him. The Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) recited the verse: "No bearer of burdens can bear theburden of another."
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When Allah assembles men on the Day of Resurrection 'for a day about which there is no doubt', a crier will call saying that if anyone has associated someone in a deed which he did for Allah's sake, he can seek his reward from someone other than Allah, for Allah is the One who has least need of partners."
Ahmad transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There dominate ninety-nine dragons over the unbeliever in the grave. They (constantly) bite him and sting him till there comes the hour (of resurrection). (These dragons are so poisonous) that if one of them exhales on the Earth, no verdure will ever grow upon it.
Reported by Darimi, Tirmidhi transmitted something similar but he said seventy instead of ninety-nine.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to pray in the forenoon so often that we felt he would never stop doing so; then he would leave off doing so for so long that we felt he would never resume prayer at that time.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When you go in to visit an invalid, express a hope that he will live long. That will not avert anything, but it will comfort him."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, and Tirmidhi said this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "There are two characteristics which are not combined in a believer: miserliness and a bad disposition."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah, who is Blessed and Exalted says, 'To him who is so occupied with the Qur'an as to neglect mentioning me and making any request of me, I will give the most excellent things I give to those who ask.' The superiority of Allah's words over all other words is like Allah's superiority over His creatures."
Tirmidhi, Darimi, and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it, and Tirmidhi said this is a hasan gharib tradition.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone recites surat al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine brightly for him till the next Friday."
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Kitab ad-Da'wah al-Kabir.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was asked who would be most excellent and most exalted in degree in Allah's estimation on the Day of Resurrection, and replied, "The men and women who make frequent mention of Allah." He was asked if they would be superior even to the man who had fought in Allah's cause, and replied, "Even though he plied his sword among infidels and polytheists till it was broken and smeared with blood, the one who made mention of Allah would have a more excellent degree than he."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said that the devil said, "By Thy might, my Lord, I shall continue to lead Thy servants astray as long as their spirits are in their bodies." The Lord, Who is Great and Glorious, replied, "By My might, glory and exalted station, I shall continue to pardon them as long as they ask My forgiveness."
Ahmad transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said that if anyone said three times when going to bed, "I ask the forgiveness of Allah other than whom there is no god, the Living, the Eternal, and I turn in repentance to Him," Allah would forgive him his sins, even if they were like the foam of the sea, or in number like the sand which had accumulated, or as many as the leaves of the trees, or as numerous as the days of this world.
Tirmidhi, saying this is a gharib tradition.
AbuSa'id heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "I seek refuge in Allah from infidelity and debt." A man asked him whether he treated infidelity on a level with debt, and he replied that he did. One version has: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from infidelity and poverty." A man asked whether they were equal, and he replied that they were.
Nasa'i transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When one of you beats his servant and he mentions Allah, you must stop beating him."
Tirmidhi and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it, but the latter has, "he should stop" instead of "You must stop beating him."
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The one who will be dearest to Allah and nearest to Him in station on the Day of Resurrection will be a just imam, and the one who will be most hateful to Allah on the Day of Resurrection and will receive the severest punishment (or as one version says, will be farthest from Him in station) will be a tyrannical imam."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade selling booty before it was divided.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If Allah were to withhold rain from His servants for five years and then send it, a section of mankind would be infidels saying they had been supplied with water through the agency of the rainy star, al-Mijdah."
Nasa'i transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The truest vision comes a little before daybreak."
Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that when a man gets up in the morning, all the limbs humble themselves before the tongue and say, "Fear Allah for our sake, for we are dependent on you; if you are straight we are straight, but if you are crooked we are crooked."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "There is no clement one who does not stumble and no sage who does not have experience."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) went out to the prayer and saw the people looking as if they were grinning he said, "If you were to keep much in remembrance death which is the cutter-off of pleasures, it would distract you from what I see. Keep much in remembrance death which is the cutter-off of pleasure, for a day does not come to the grave without its saying, 'I am the house of exile, I am the house of solitude, I am the house of dust, I am the house of worms.' When a believer dies the grave says to him, 'Welcome and greeting; you are indeed the dearest to me of those who walk upon me. I have been given charge of you today and you have come to me and you will see how I shall treat you.' It will then expand for him as far as the eye can see and a door to Paradise will be opened for him. But when the profligate or infidel is buried the grave says to him, `No welcome and no greeting to you; you are the most hateful to me of those who walk upon me. I have been given charge of you today and you have come to me and you will see how I shall treat you.' AbuSa'id told that Allah's Messenger indicated it by interlacing his fingers. Then he said, "Seventy dragons will be put in charge of him of such a nature that if one of them were to breathe on the earth it would produce no crops as long as the world lasted, and they will bite and scratch him till he is brought to the reckoning." He also reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying. "The grave is one of the gardens of Paradise, or one of the pits of Hell."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Some of my people will intercede for a large number, some for a tribe, some for a group, and some for a single man, till they enter Paradise."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "There are a hundred grades in Paradise; if the universe were gathered in one of them it would hold it all."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding the words of Allah Most High, "And couches raised high," that their height was like the distance between Heaven and Earth, a distance of five hundred years.
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The faces of the first company to enter Paradise on the Day of Resurrection will be as bright as the moon on the night when it is full, and the second company will be like the most beautiful shining planet in the sky. Every man among them will have two wives, each wife wearing seventy mantles through which the marrow of her leg will be seen."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The lowliest of the inhabitants of Paradise will be he who has eighty thousand servants, seventy-two wives, and for whom a round pavilion of pearls, chrysoprase and rubies as large as the distance between al-Jabiyah and San'a will be set up." By the same isnad he said, "Those who are to go to Paradise, who die whether young or old, will come into Paradise aged thirty and never grow older. The same applies to those who will go to Hell." By the same isnad he said, "They will wear crowns, the smallest pearl of which will illuminate the space between the east and the west." By the same isnad he said, "When a believer in Paradise wishes for a child, its conception, delivery and growth to full age will be accomplished in a moment as he wishes." Ishaq ibn Ibrahim said regarding this tradition that when a believer in Paradise wish for a child it would come in a moment, "But he will not wish for one."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition. Ibn Majah transmitted the fourth part, and Darimi the last statement.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The ascent is a mountain in Hell, up which people will be made to climb for seventy years and down which they will be made to fall a similar distance, and so on for ever."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said about Allah's words, "Like molten copper," that it is like the sediment of olive-oil, and that when it approaches one's face the skin of one's face will fall into it."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger said, "I shall be pre-eminent among the descendants of Adam on the Day of Resurrection, and this is no boast; and in my hand will be the banner of praise, and this is no boast. There will be no prophet, Adam or any other, who will not be under my banner. I shall be the first from whom the Earth will be cleft open, and this is no boast."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger said, "That man will have the highest grade among my people in Paradise." AbuSa'id said, "I swear by Allah that till the end of his life we thought that that man was no one other than Umar ibn al-Khattab."
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to Ali, "It is not allowable, Ali, for anyone but you or me to be in a state of ceremonial impurity in this mosque." Ali ibn al-Mundhir told that he asked Dirar ibn Surad what was the meaning of this tradition, and he replied that the meaning was, "It is not allowable for anyone but you or me to walk through it in a state of ceremonial impurity."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Al-Hasan and al-Husayn will be the chief ones among the youths who go to Paradise."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "My confidants to whom I turn are my family, and my close friends are the Ansar, so forgive those of them who do wrong and accept the excuses of those of them who do good."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan tradition.
A person belonging to the clan of Aslam, who was called Ma'iz ibnMalik, came to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and said: Ihave committed an immoral crime (adultery), so inflict punishmentupon me. Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) turned him awayagain and again. He then asked his people (about the state of hismind).They said: We do not know of any ailment of his exceptthat he has committed some crime and he thinks that he will notbe able to relieve himself of its burden unless the Hadd isimposed upon him. He (Ma'iz) came back to Allah's Apostle (peacebe upon him) who commanded us to stone him. We took him to theBaqi' al-Gharqad (the graveyard of Medina). We neither tied himnor dug any ditch for him. We attacked him with bones, clods andpebbles. He ran away and we ran after him until he reached thestony ground (al-Harrah) and stopped there and we stoned him withthe heavy stones of the Harrah until he became motionless (hedied).He (the Holy Prophet) then addressed (us) in the eveningsaying: Whenever we set forth on an expedition in the cause ofAllah, some of those connected with us shrieked (under thepressure of sexual lust) like the bleating of a billy-goat. It isessential that if a person having committed such a deed isbrought to me, I should punish him. He neither begged forgivenessfor him nor cursed him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If any Muslim clothes aMuslim when he is naked, Allah will clothe him with some greengarments of Paradise; if any Muslim feeds a Muslim when he ishungry, Allah will feed him with some of the fruits of Paradise;and if any Muslim gives a Muslim drink when he is thirsty, Allahwill give him some of the pure wine which is sealed to drink.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When a man himself wakes atnight and wakens his wife and they pray two rak'ahs together,they are recorded among the men and women who make much mentionof Allah.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If a man awakens his wifeat night, and then both pray or both offer two rak'ahs together,the (name of the )man will be recorded among those who mentionthe name of Allah, and the (name of the) woman will be recordedamong those who mention the name of Allah. Ibn Kathir did notnarrate this tradition as a statement of the Prophet (peace beupon him), but he reported it as a statement of AbuSa'id.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: There would be in thelast (phase) of the time a caliph who would distribute wealth butwould not count.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) cursed the wailing womanand the woman who listens to her.
When the time of his death came, he called for new clothes andput on them. He then said: I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) say: A deceased will be raised in the clothes in whichhe died.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A man giving a dirham assadaqah (charity) during his life is better than giving onehundred dirhams as sadaqah (charity) at the moment of his death.
I asked the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) about theembryo. He replied: Eat it if you wish. Musaddad's version says:we said: Apostle of Allah, we slaughter a she-camel, a cow and asheep, and we find an embryo in its womb. Shall we throw it awayor eat it? He replied: Eat it if you wish for the slaughter ofits mother serves its slaughter.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) used to sacrifice achoice, horned ram with black round the eyes, the mouth and thefeet.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Beware of thewages of a distributor of booty (qusamah). We asked: What isqusamah (wages of a distributor)? He said: It means a thing whichis shared by the people, and then it is reduced.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When three are on ajourney, they should appoint one of them as their commander.
A man emigrated to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) fromthe Yemen. He asked (him): Have you anyone (of your relatives) inthe Yemen? He replied: My parents. He asked: Did they permit you?He replied: No. He said: Go back to them and ask for theirpermission. If they permit you, then fight (in the path ofAllah), otherwise be devoted to them.
A woman came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while we werewith him. She said: Apostle of Allah, my husband, Safwan ibnal-Mu'attal, beats me when I pray, and makes me break my fastwhen I keep a fast, and he does not offer the dawn prayer untilthe sun rises. He asked Safwan, who was present, about what shehad said. He replied: Apostle of Allah, as for her statement "hebeats me when I pray", she recites two surahs (during prayer) andI have prohibited her (to do so). He (the Prophet) said: If onesurah is recited (during prayer), that is sufficient for thepeople. (Safwan continued:) As regards her saying "he makes mebreak my fast," she dotes on fasting; I am a young man, I cannotrestrain myself. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) saidon that day: A woman should not fast except with the permissionof her husband. (Safwan said:) As for her statement that I donot pray until the sun rises, we are a people belonging to aclass, and that (our profession of supplying water) is alreadyknown about us. We do not awake until the sun rises. He said:When you awake, offer your prayer.
A man said: Apostle of Allah, I have a slave-girl and I withdrawthe penis from her (while having intercourse), and I dislike thatshe becomes pregnant. I intend (by intercourse) what the menintend by it. The Jews say that withdrawing the penis (azl) isburying the living girls on a small scale. He (the Prophet) said:The Jews told a lie. If Allah intends to create it, you cannotturn it away.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked which of the creaturesa pilgrim in sacred state could kill. He replied: The snake, thescorpion, the rat; he should drive away the pied crow, but shouldnot kill it; the biting dog, the kite, and any wild animal whichattacks (man).
Ali ibn AbuTalib found a dinar and he took it to Fatimah. Sheasked the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) about it. He said:This is Allah's provision. Then the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) ate out of the food (bought with it), and Ali andFatimah also ate out of that food. But afterwards a woman camecrying out about the dinar. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:Pay the dinar, Ali.
A man entered the mosque. The Prophet (peace be upon him)commanded the people to throw their clothes as sadaqah. Thereuponthey threw their clothes (as sadaqah). He then asked him to taketwo clothes from them. He reprimanded him and said: Take yourclothe.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone begs when he hassomething equivalent to an uqiyah in value, he has beggedimmoderately. So I said: My she-camel, Yaqutah, is better than anuqiyah. The version of Hisham goes: "better than forty dirhams.So I returned and did not beg anything from him." Hisham added inhis version: "An uqiyah during the time of the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) was equivalent to forty dirhams."
I shall always pay one sa'. We used to pay during the lifetime ofthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) one sa' of dried datesor of barley, or of cheese, or of raisins. This is the version ofYahya. Sufyan added in his version: "or one sa' of flour." Thenarrator Hamid (ibn Yahya) said: The people objected to this(addition); Sufyan then left it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is no zakat payable(on grain or dates) on less than five camel-loads. The wasq (onecamel-load) measures sixty sa' in weight.
One day the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) entered themosque. He saw there a man from the Ansar called AbuUmamah. Hesaid: What is the matter that I am seeing you sitting in themosque when there is no time of prayer? He said: I am entangledin cares and debts, Apostle of Allah. He replied: Shall I notteach you words by which, when you say them, Allah will removeyour care, and settle your debt? He said: Why not, Apostle ofAllah? He said: Say in the morning and evening: "O Allah, I seekrefuge in Thee from care and grief, I seek refuge in Thee fromincapacity and slackness, I seek refuge in Thee from cowardiceand niggardliness, and I seek in Thee from being overcome by debtand being put in subjection by men." He said: When I did thatAllah removed my care and settled my debt.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone oversleeps andmisses the witr, or forgets it, he should pray when he remembers.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Seek it (laylat al-Qadr) inthe last ten days of Ramadan. Seek it on the ninth, seventh andfifth night. I (AbuNadrah) said: You know counting better thanus, AbuSa'id. He said: Yes. I asked: What do you mean by theninth, seventh and fifth night? He said: When the twenty-firstnight passes, the night which follows it is the night; when thetwenty-third night passes, the night which follows it is theseventh; when the twenty-fifth passes, the night which follows itis the fifth.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) retired to the mosque.He heard them (the people) reciting the Qur'an in a loud voice.He removed the curtain and said: Lo! every one of you is callinghis Lord quietly. One should not trouble the other and one shouldnot raise the voice in recitation or in prayer over the voice ofthe other.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When one of you prays, andhe does not know whether he prayed more or less rak'ahs (thanthose prescribed by the Shari'ah), he should perform twoprostrations while he is sitting. If the devil comes to him, andtells him (suggests him): "You have been defiled," he should say:"You have told a lie," except that he feels smell with his nose,or sound with his ears (then his ablution will break). These arethe wording; of the tradition reported by Aban.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) got up to pray atnight (for tahajjud prayer) he uttered the takbir and then said:"Glory be to Thee, O Allah," and "Praise be to Thee" and "Blessedis Thy name," and Exalted is Thy greatness." and "There is no godbut Thee." He then said: "There is no god but Allah" three times;he then said: "Allah is altogether great" three times: "I seekrefuge in Allah, All-Hearing and All-Knowing from the accurseddevil, from his evil suggestion (hamz), from his puffing up(nafkh), and from his spitting (nafth)" He then recited (theQur'an).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Nothing interrupt prayer,but repulse as much as you can anyone who passes in front of you,for he is just a devil.
While the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was leading hisCompanions in prayer, he took off his sandals and laid them onhis left side; so when the people saw this, they removed theirsandals. When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) finishedhis prayer, he asked: What made you remove your sandals? Thereplied: We saw you remove your sandals, so we removed oursandals. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then said:Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was filth in them.When any of you comes to the mosque, he should see; if he findsfilth on his sandals, he should wipe it off and pray in them.
Prayer in congregation is equivalent to twenty-five prayers(offered alone). If he prays in a jungle, and performs its bowingand prostrations perfectly, it becomes equivalent to fiftyprayers (in respect of reward).
We observed the prayer after nightfall with the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him), and he did not come out till about half thenight had passed. He then said: Take your places. We then tookour places. Then he said: The people have prayed and gone to bed,but you are still engaged in prayer as long as you wait for theprayer. Were it not for the weakness of the weak and for thesickness of the sick. I would delay this prayer till half thenight had gone.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by a boy who was skinninga goat. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Give itup until I show you. He (the Prophet) inserted his hand betweenthe skin and the flesh until it reached the armpit. He then wentaway and led the people in prayer and he did not performablution. The version of Amr added that he did not touch water.
I heard that the people asked the Prophet of Allah (peace be uponhim): Water is brought for you from the well of Buda'ah. It is awell in which dead dogs, menstrual clothes and excrement ofpeople are thrown. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)replied: Verily water is pure and is not defiled by anything.
The people asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): Canwe perform ablution out of the well of Buda'ah, which is a wellinto which menstrual clothes, dead dogs and stinking things werethrown? He replied: Water is pure and is not defiled by anything.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: When twopersons go together for relieving themselves uncovering theirprivate parts and talking together, Allah, the Great andMajestic, becomes wrathful at this (action).
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) swore an oathstrongly, he said: No, by Him in Whose hand is the soul ofAbulQasim.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone pays in advancehe must not transfer it to someone else before he receives it.
Two men brought their dispute about the precincts of a palm-treeto the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him). According to aversion of this tradition, he ordered to measure and it wasmeasured. It was found seven yards. According to another version,it was found five yards. He made a decision according to that.AbdulAziz said: He ordered to measure with a branch of itsbranches. It was then measured.
I was sitting in the company of the poor members of theemigrants. Some of them were sitting together because of lack ofclothing while a reader was reciting to us. All of a sudden theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) came along and stood besideus. When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) stood, thereader stopped and greeted him. He asked: What were you doing? We said: Apostle of Allah! We had a reader who was reciting to usand we were listening to the Book of Allah, the Exalted. TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: Praise be toAllah Who has put among my people those with whom I have beenordered to stay. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) thensat among us so as to be like one of us, and when he had made asign with his hand they sat in a circle with their faces turnedtowards him. The narrator said: I think that the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) did not recognize any of them exceptme. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: Rejoice,you group of poor emigrants, in the announcement that you willhave perfect light on the Day of Resurrection. You will enterParadise half a day before the rich, and that is five hundredyears.
The garlic and onions were mentioned before the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him). He was told: The most severe of them isgarlic. Would you make it unlawful? The Prophet (peace be uponhim) said: Eat it, and he who eats it should not come near thismosque until its odour goes away.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) finished his food,he said: "Praise be to Allah Who has given us food and drink andmade us Muslims."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) read the verse mentioned above,"min du'f."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A man from the Illiyyunwill look downwards at the people of Paradise and Paradise willbe glittering as if it were a brilliant star. He (the narrator)said: In this way the word durri (brilliant) occurs in thistradition, i.e. the letter dal (d) has short vowel u and it hasno hamzah ('). AbuBakr and Umar will be of them and will havesome additional blessings.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) related a tradition inwhich he mentioned the words "Jibril and Mikal" and he pronouncedthem "Jibra'ila wa Mika'ila."
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) mentioned the name ofthe one who will sound the trumpet (sahib as-sur) and said: Onhis right will be Jibra'il and on his left will be Mika'il.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A man should not look atthe private parts of another man, and a woman should not look atthe private parts of another woman. A man should not lie withanother man without wearing lower garment under one cover; and awoman should not be lie with another woman without wearing lowergarment under one cover.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) put on a newgarment he mentioned it by name, turban or shirt, and would thensay: O Allah, praise be to Thee! as Thou hast clothed me with it,I ask Thee for its good and the good of that for which it wasmade, and I seek refuge in Thee from its evil and the evil ofthat for which it was made.
AbdurRahman said: I asked AbuSa'id al-Khudri about wearing lowergarment. He said: You have come to the man who knows it verywell. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The way fora believer to wear a lower garment is to have it halfway down hislegs and he is guilty of no sin if it comes halfway between thatand the ankles, but what comes lower than the ankles is in Hell.On the day of Resurrection. Allah will not look at him who trailshis lower garment conceitedly.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Mahdi will be of mystock, and will have a broad forehead a prominent nose. He willfill the earth will equity and justice as it was filled withoppression and tyranny, and he will rule for seven years.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The best fighting (jihad)in the path of Allah is (to speak) a word of justice to anoppressive ruler.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was distributingsomething, a man came towards him and bent down on him. TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) struck him with a bough andhis face was wounded. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)said to him: Come and take retaliation. He said: no, I haveforgiven, Apostle of Allah!.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) as saying: Thebest places to sit are those which provide most room.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Associate only with abeliever, and let only a God-fearing man eat your meals.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) sat, he had hisknees drawn up supported by his hands.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone cares for threedaughters, disciplines them, marries them, and does good to them,he will go to Paradise.
Muhammad ibn AbuYahya said that his father told that he and hiscompanion went to AbuSa'id al-Khudri to pay a sick visit to him.He said: Then we came out from him and met a companion of ourswho wanted to go to him. We went ahead and sat in the mosque. Hethen came back and told us that he heard AbuSa'id al-Khudri say:The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Some snakes arejinn; so when anyone sees one of them in his house, he shouldgive it a warning three times. If it return (after that), heshould kill it, for it is a devil.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who eats lawfully earned food and acts according to (my Sunnah) and mankind is safe from any excess on his part, will enter Paradise. Thereupon someone said: Allah's Messenger, verily in these times there are many of that description. Whereupon he (the Prophet) said: And many such will there be in ages after me.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Mankind shall follow you and people from the different parts of the Earth will come to you in order to learn and acquire understanding of religion. So when they come to you exhort them to do good.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, A believer is never satiated with listening to the good things till he reaches Paradise.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: One who has not performed ablution is not (supposed) to observe prayer And no ablution (is perfect) for which the name of Allah is not mentioned.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: How can I feel happy when the Angel Israfil (the angel appointed to blow the Trumpet on the Day of Judgment) has put his lips to the Trumpet waiting to hear the order to blow the trumpet? This very much distressed his companions, so he told them to seek comfort through reciting "Sufficient for us is Allah and an excellent Guardian is He".

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was asked about the cleanliness of the cistern situated between Mecca and Medina and where the beasts, dogs and asses came down. He said: For them is that which they have taken into their bellies, we have what is left (from them) and it is pure.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When you see a person coming to the mosque frequently, bear witness to his faith, for Allah says: `Only who affirms his faith in Allah and the Last Day, can maintain the mosques of Allah. (9:18)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek protection against the Jinn and the evil eye till surahs al-Falaq and an-Nas were revealed. After they were revealed he stuck to them and discarded everything beside them.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When you see a person frequenting the mosque, bear witness to his faith, for Allah, the Lord of honour and glory has said: He alone can service the mosques of Allah who believes in Allah and the Last Day. (9:18)

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There are three people upon whom Allah looks with pleasure: the one who rises up during the night to prayer; and those who arrange themselves in rows for prayer; and the people who form themselves in ranks for fighting against the enemy.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A believer never has his fill of good deeds till he ends up in Paradise.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "There is no sadaqah payable on grain or dates till they reach five camel-loads."
Nasa'i transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Three things do not break the fast of one who is fasting: cupping, vomiting and a nocturnal emission."
Tirmidhi transmitted it saying this is a tradition which is not regarded, its transmitter AbdurRahman ibn Zayd being declared a weak traditionist.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Any Muslim who makes a supplication containing nothing which is sinful or which involves breaking ties of relationship will be given for it by Allah one of three things: He will give him swift answer, or store it up for him in the next world, or turn away from him an equivalent amount of evil." Those who heard it said they would then make many supplications and he replied that Allah was more ready to answer than they were to ask.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said that Moses asked his Lord to teach him something with which to make mention of Him or to supplicate Him, and was told to say, "There is no god but Allah." He replied to his Lord that all His servants said this, but he wanted something particularly for himself, and He said, "Moses, were the seven heavens and their inhabitants, apart from me, and the seven earths put on one side of a balance and 'There is no god but Allah' on the other, 'There is no god but Allah would outweigh them."
It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.
At the battle of the Trench they asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) whether there was anything they could repeat, for their hearts were in their mouths. He replied that there was; they should say, "O Allah, cover our danger points and give security from fears." He said that Allah then sent a wind in the faces of His enemies and Allah routed them by the wind.

AbuSa'id had wine belonging to an orphan, and when al-Ma'idah came down he asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) about it, telling him it belonged to an orphan, but he said, "Pour it away."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The believers in the world are in three classes: those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and do not doubt, but strive with their property and their persons in Allah's cause; the man whom people trust with their property and their persons; and the man who, when he is about to display greed, abandons it for the sake of Allah, Who is Great and Glorious."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade blowing into a drink. When a man said he saw specks in the vessel he told him to pour them out, and when he said his thirst was not quenched in one breath he told him to remove the cup from his mouth and take a breath.
Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from jinn and the evil eye in men till the Mu'awwidhatan came down, after which he made use of them and abandoned everything else.
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) stood up among us to deliver an address after the afternoon prayer, and he did not leave out anything that would happen up to the Day of Resurrection without mentioning it. Some remembered and some forgot his words. In the course of his address he said, "The world is sweet and verdant and Allah is putting you as successors in it, so consider how you act. Be on you guard against the world, and be on your guard against women." He mentioned that everyone who had betrayed a trust would have a banner on the Day of Resurrection to the extent of his betrayal in the world, and that no betrayal was greater than that of the ruler of the common people, whose banner would be fixed onto his posterior. And he said, "Let not respect for men prevent any of you from speaking the truth when he knows it." One version says "From changing a disreputable thing if he sees it." AbuSa'id then wept and said: We have seen it, but respect for men has prevented us from speaking about it. The Prophet then said, "The descendants of Adam have been created in various categories. Some are born believers and live and die believers; some are born infidels and live and die infidels; some are born believers and live as believers, but die infidels; some are born infidels and live as infidels, but die believers." It is said that he mentioned anger, saying, "Some are swift to anger and swift to cool down, the one characteristic making up for the other; some are slow to anger and slow to cool down, the one characteristic making up for the other; but the best of you are those who are slow to anger and swift to cool down, and the worst of you are those who are swift to anger and slow to cool down." He continued, "Beware of anger, for it is a live coal on the heart of the descendant of Adam. Do you not notice the swelling of the veins of his neck and the redness of his eyes? So when anyone experiences anything of that nature he should lie down and cleave to the earth." The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned debts saying, "Some among you are good payers, but make immoderate demands when a debt is owed to them, the one characteristic making up for the other. Some are bad payers, but make gentle demands when a debt is owed to them, the one characteristic making up for the other. But the best among you are those who are good payers when they owe a debt and make gentle demands when a debt is owed to them, and the worst among you are those who are bad payers when they owe a debt and make immoderate demands when a debt is owed to them." Then when the sun was shining over the tops of the palm trees and the extremities of the walls he said, "No more of the world remains in relation to what has passed than there remains of this day in relation to what has passed."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came out to them when they were discussing the antichrist and asked if they would like him to tell what caused him more fear for them than the antichrist. They replied that they certainly would, so he said, "Latent polytheism, meaning that a man will stand up and pray and lengthen his prayer because he sees someone looking at him."
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in the course of the story about the Mahdi, that a man would come to him and say, "Give me, give me, Mahdi," and he would pour into his garment as much as he was able to carry.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "By Him in Whose hand my soul is, the last hour will not come before wild beasts speak to men, the end of a man's whip and the thong of his sandal speak to him, and his thigh informs him what his family have done since he left them."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "How can I be at ease when the one who blows the trumpet has put it to his mouth, inclined his ear and bent his forehead, waiting to see when he will be ordered to blow it?" Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) was asked what command he had to give them and told them to say, "Allah is sufficient for us and an excellent guardian is He."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The awnings of Hell have four thick walls, each wall a distance of forty years."

Allah's Messenger said, "There is no prophet who does not have two wazirs from the inhabitants of Heaven and two from the inhabitants of Earth. My two wazirs from the inhabitants of Heaven are Gabriel and Michael, and my two wazirs from the inhabitants of Earth are AbuBakr and Umar."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
People from the tribe of AbdulQays came to the Allah's Apostle(peace be upon him) and said: Messenger of Allah, we belong tothe tribe of Rabi'ah; there live between you and us theunbelievers of the Mudar tribe so we find it impossible to cometo you except in the sacred months. Direct us to a deed which wemust communicate to those who have been left behind us and bydoing which we may enter Heaven. Upon this the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) said: I enjoin upon you four (things) andforbid you to do four (things): worship Allah and associate nonewith Him, establish prayer, pay Zakat, and observe the fast ofRamadan, and pay the fifth part out of the booty. And I prohibityou from four (things): dry gourds, green-coloured jars, hollowedstumps of palm-trees, and receptacles. They (the members of thedelegation) said: Do you know what an-naqir is? He replied: Yes,it is a stump which you hollow out and in which you throw smalldates.Sa'id said: He (the Holy Prophet) used the word tamar(dates). (The Holy Prophet then added): Then you sprinkle waterover it and when its fermentation subsides, you drink it (and youare so intoxicated) that one amongst you, or one amongst them(the other members of your tribe, who were not present there)strikes his cousin with the sword. He (the narrator) said: Therewas a man amongst us who had sustained injury on this veryaccount due to (intoxication), and he said that he tried toconceal it, out of shame, from the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him). I however inquired from the Messenger of Allah (peacebe upon him) (if we discard those utensils which you haveforbidden us to use), then what type of vessels should be usedfor drink? (The Holy Prophet) replied: The water-skins themouths of which are tied (with a string). They (again) said:Prophet of Allah, our land abounds in rats and water-skins cannotremain intact. The Holy Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him)said: Drink from water-skins) even if these are nibbled by rats.And then (addressing) al-Ashajj of AbdulQays, he said: Verily,you posses two such qualities which Allah loves: insight anddeliberateness.
I heard the Messenger of Allah as saying: He who amongst you seessomething abominable should modify it with the help of his hand;and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do itwith his tongue; and if he has not strength enough to do it,(even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart and that is theleast of faith.
The Messenger of Allah observed: The person who believes in Allahand the Last Day never nurses a grudge against the Ansar.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The (permanent)inhabitants of the Fire are those who are doomed to it, andverily they would neither die nor live in it (al-Qur'an, xx.47;liiixii.13). But the people whom the Fire would afflict(temporarily) on account of their sins, or so said (the narrator)"on account of their misdeeds," He would cause them to die tillthey would be turned into charcoal. Then they would be grantedintercession and would be brought in groups and would be spreadon the rivers of Paradise and then it would be said: Oinhabitants of Paradise, pour water over them; then they wouldsprout forth like the sprouting of seed in the silt carried byflood. A man among the people said: (It appears) as if theMessenger of Allah lived in the steppe.
Verily, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Amongstthe inhabitants of Paradise the lowest in rank will be the personwhose face Allah would turn away from the Fire towards theParadise, and make a shady tree appear before him. He will say: Omy Lord! Direct my steps to this tree so that I (may enjoy) itsshade; and the rest of the hadith is like that narrated by IbnMas'ud, but he did not mention: "He (Allah) would say: O son ofAdam! What will bring an end to your making requests to Me" tothe end of the tradition. In it, he added: Allah will remindhim: Ask such and such, and when his expectations are realised,Allah will say: That is for you, and ten times as much. He willthen enter his house and his two wives with large dark eyes willenter after him. They will say: Praise be to Allah Who hascreated you for us and us for you. He will say: No one has beengiven the like of which I have been given.
Verily, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Theleast tormented of the inhabitants of the Fire would be he whowould wear two shoes of Fire and his brain would boil on accountof the heat of the shoes.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When anyoneamongst you has sexual intercourse with his wife and then heintends to repeat it, he should perform ablution. In the hadithtransmitted by AbuBakr (the words are): "Between the two (acts)there should be an ablution." or he (the narrator) said: "Then heintended that it should be repeated."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A man should notsee the private parts of another man, and a woman should not seethe private parts of another woman, and a man should not lie withanother man under one covering, and a woman should not lie withanother woman under one covering.
I went to Quba with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) onMonday till we reached (the habitation) of Banu Salim. TheMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood at the door of Itbanand called him loudly. So he came out dragging his lower garment.Upon this the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: wehave made this man to make haste Itban said: Messenger of Allah,if a man parts with his wife suddenly without seminal emission,what is he required to do (with regard to bath)? The Messenger ofAllah ((peace be upon him)) said: It is with the seminal emissionthat bath becomes obligatory.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw (a tendency) amonghis Companions to go to the back, so he said to them: Comeforward and follow my lead, and let those who come after youfollow your lead. People will continue to keep back till Allahwill put them at the back.
We used to estimate how long Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) stood in the noon and afternoon prayers, and we estimatedhad he stood in the first two rak'ahs of the noon prayer as longas it takes to recite Alif-Lam-Mim, Tanzil, i.e. as-Sajdah. Weestimated that he stood half that time in the last two rak'ahs;that he stood in the first two of the afternoon as long as he didin the last two at noon; and in the last two of the afternoonprayer about half that time. AbuBakr in his narration has made nomention of Alif-Lam-Mim, Tanzil, but said: As long as it takes torecite thirty verses.
The noon prayer would start and one would go to al-Baqi and afterhaving relieved himself he would perform ablution and then come,while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would be in thefirst rak'ah because he would prolong it so much.
When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) raised his headafter bowing, he said: O Allah! our Lord, to Thee be the praisethat would fill all the heavens and the earth, and all that itpleases Thee besides (them). O, Thou art worthy of praise andglory, most worthy of what a servant says, and we all are Thyservants, no one can withhold what Thou givest or give what Thouwithholdest, and riches cannot avail a wealthy person againstThee.
I visited the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and saw himpraying on a reed mat on which he was prostrating himself. And Isaw him praying in a single garment with ends crossed with eachother.
We made no transgression but Khaybar was conquered. We, theCompanions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fellupon this plant, i.e. garlic, because the people were hungry. Weate it to our heart's content and then made our way towards themosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sensed itsodour and he said: He who takes anything of this offensive plantmust not approach us in the mosque. The people said: Its (use)has been forbidden; its(use) has been forbidden. This reached theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and he said: O people, Icannot forbid (the use of a thing) which Allah has made lawful,but (this garlic) is a plant the odour of which is repugnant tome.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) along with hisCompanions happened to pass by a field in which onions were sown.The people stopped there and ate out of that, but some of themdid not eat. Then the (Prophet's Companions) went to him. He(first) called those who had not eaten the onions and kept theothers (who had taken onions) waiting till its odour vanished.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When any one ofyou is in doubt about his prayer and he does not know how much hehas prayed, three or four (rak'ahs), he should cast aside hisdoubt and base his prayer on what he is sure of, then perform twoprostrations before giving salutations. If he has prayed fiverak'ahs, they will make his prayer an even number for him, and ifhe has prayed exactly four, they will be humiliation for thedevil.
AbuSa'id went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) andfound him observing prayer on a mat and prostrating on that.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When there are threepersons, one of them should lead them. The one among them mostworthy to act as Imam is one who is best versed in the Qur'an.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Observe Witr prayerbefore it is morning. AbuSa'id reported that they (the Prophet'sCompanions) asked the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) aboutWitr (prayer). (In reply to their inquiry) he said: Observe Witrprayer before it is morning.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Exhort to recite"There is no god but Allah" to those of you who are dying.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: No Sadaqah (Zakat) ispayable on less than five wasqs of (dates or grains), on lessthan five camel-heads and on less than five uqiyahs (of silver).
We went out on an expedition with Allah's Messenger (peace beupon him) on the 16th of Ramadan. Some of us fasted and some ofus broke the fast. But neither the observer of the fast foundfault with one who broke it, nor the breaker of the fast foundfault with one who observed it.
Qaza'ah reported: I came to AbuSa'id al-Khudri who was surrounded(by people). When they had dispersed, I said to him: I am notgoing to ask you about what these people were asking. I ask youabout fasting on a journey. Upon this he said: We travelled withthe Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) towards Mecca and wehad been observing a fast. We halted at a place. There theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: You are nearing yourenemy and breaking your fast will give you greater strength. Thatwas a concession (given to us). But some of us continued toobserve the fast and some of us broke it. We then dismounted atanother place and he (the Holy Prophet) said: You are going toencounter the enemy in the morning and breaking the fast willgive you strength, so break the fast. As it was a point ofstress, we broke the fast. But subsequently we saw ourselvesobserving that fast with the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) on a journey.
We went out with Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)pronouncing loudly the Talbiyah for Hajj. When we came to Mecca,he commanded us that we should change this (Ihram for Hajj) tothat of Umrah except one who had brought the sacrificial animalwith him. When it was the day of Tarwiyah (8th of Dhul-Hijjah)and we went to Mina, we (again) pronounced Talbiyah for Hajj.
AbuSa'id Mawla al-Mahri reported that they were hard pressed bythe distress and hardship of Medina, and he came to AbuSa'idal-Khudri and said to him: I have a large family (to support) andwe are enduring hardships; I have therefore made up my mind totake my family to some fertile land. Thereupon AbuSa'id said:Don't do that, stay in Medina, for we have come out with Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him). (I think that he also said): Whenwe reached Usfan, he (the Holy Prophet with his companions)stayed there for some nights. There the people said: By Allah, weare lying here idle, whereas our children are unprotected behindus, and we do not feel secure about them. This (apprehension oftheirs) reached Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him), whereupon hesaid: What is this matter concerning you that has reached me? (Ido not retain how he said it, whether he said like this:) By Him(in the name of Whom) I take an oath, (or he said like this:) ByHim in Whose Hand is my life, I made up my mind or if you like (Ido not remember which words he actually said), I should commandmy camel to proceed and not to let it halt until it comes toMedina. Then said: Ibrahim declared Mecca as the sacred territoryand it became sacred, and I declare Medina as the sacredterritory--the area between the two mountains (Air and Uhud).Thus no blood is to be shed within its (bounds) and no weapon isto be carried for fighting, and the leaves of the trees thereshould not be beaten off except for fodder. O Allah, bless us inour city; O Allah, bless us in our sa'; O Allah, bless us in ourcity. O Allah, bless with this blessing two more blessings. ByHim in Whose Hand is my life, there is no ravine or mountain pathof Medina which is not protected by two angels until you reachthere. (He then said to the people:) Proceed, and we thereforeproceed until we came to Medina. By Him (in Whose name) we takean oath and (in Whose name) an oath is taken (Hammad is in doubtabout it), we had hardly put down our camel-saddles on arrivingat Medina when we were attacked by the people of the tribe ofAbdullah ibn Ghatafan, but none had dared to do it before.
AbuSalamah ibn AbdurRahman reported: AbdurRahman ibn AbuSa'idal-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) happened to pass by me andI said to him: How did you hear your father making mention of themosque founded on Piety? He said: My father said: I went toAllah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as he was in the house ofone of his wives, and said: Messenger of Allah, which of the twomosques is founded on piety? Thereupon he took a handful ofpebbles and threw them on the ground and then said: This is thevery mosque of yours (mosque at Medina). He (the narrator) said:I bear witness that I heard your father making mention of it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The most wicked amongthe people in the eye of Allah on the Day of Judgement is the manwho goes to his wife and she comes to him, and then he divulgesher secret.
At the Battle of Hunayn Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)sent an army to Awtas and encountered the enemy and fought withthem. Having overcome them and taken them captives, theCompanions of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) seemed torefrain from having intercourse with captive women because oftheir husbands being polytheists. Then Allah, Most High, sentdown regarding that: "And women already married, except thosewhom your right hand possess (iv.24)" (i.e. they were lawful forthem when their Iddah period came to an end).
In the time of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) a mansuffered loss in fruits he had bought and his debt increased; soAllah's Messenger (peace be upon him) told (the people) to givehim charity and they gave him charity, but that was not enough topay the debt in full, whereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) said to his creditors: "Take what you find, you will havenothing but alms."
I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) addressing inMedina. He said: O people, Allah is giving an indication (of theprohibition) of wine, and He is probably soon going to give anorder about it. So he who has anything of it with him should sellthat, and derive benefit out of it. He (the narrator) said: Wewaited for some time that Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him)said: Verily Allah, the Exalted, has forbidden wine. So who hearsthis verse and he has anything of it with him, he should neitherdrink it nor sell it. He (the narrator) said: The people thenbrought whatever they had of it with them on the streets ofMedina and spilt that.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Gold is to be paidfor by gold, silver by silver, wheat by wheat, barley by barley,dates by dates, salt by salt, like by like, payment being madehand to hand. He who made an addition to it, or asked for anaddition, in fact dealt in usury. The receiver and the giver areequally guilty.
AbuNadrah said: I asked Ibn Abbas about the conversion (of goldand silver for silver and gold). He said: Is it a hand to handexchange? I said: Yes, whereupon he said: There is no harm init. I informed AbuSa'id about it, telling him that I had askedIbn Abbas about it and he said: Is it a hand to hand exchange?Isaid: Yes, whereupon he said: There is no harm in it. He (thenarrator) said, or he said like it: We shall soon write to him,and he will not give you this fatwa (religious verdict). Hesaid: By Allah, one of the boy-servants of Allah's Messenger(peace be upon him) brought dates, but he refused to accept them(on the plea) that those did not seem to be the dates of ourland. He said: Something had happened to the dates of our land,or our dates. So I received these dates (in exchange by giving)excess (of the dates of our land). Thereupon he said: You madean addition for getting the fine dates (in exchange) which istantamount to interest; don't do that (in future). Whenever youfind some doubt (as regards the deteriorating quality of) yourdates, sell them, and then buy the dates that you like.
While we were with the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) on ajourney, a person came upon his mount and began to stare on theright and on the left. (It was at this moment) that Allah'sMessenger (peace be upon him) said: He who has an extra mountshould give that to one who has no mount for him, and he who hassurplus of provisions should give them to him who has noprovisions, and he made mention of so many kinds of wealth untilwe were of the opinion that none of us has any right over thesurplus.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When oath ofallegiance has been taken for two caliphs, kill the one for whomthe oath was taken later.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said (to him):AbuSa'id, whoever cheerfully accepts Allah as his Lord, Islam ashis religion and Muhammad as his Apostle is necessarily entitledto enter Paradise. He (AbuSa'id) wondered at it and said:Messenger of Allah, repeat it for me. He (the Messenger of Allah)did that and said: There is another act which elevates theposition of a man in Paradise to a grade one hundred (higher),and the elevation between one grade and the other is equal to theheight of the heaven from the earth. He (AbuSa'id) said: What isthat act? He replied: Jihad in the way of Allah! Jihad in the wayof Allah!
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent a force to BanuLihyan (who are from Banu Hudhayl) and said: One man from everytwo and the reward (will be divided) between the two.
A person said: Messenger of Allah, we live in a land abounding inlizards, so what do you command or what verdict you give (abouteating of it)? Thereupon he said: It was mentioned to me that apeople from among Banu Isra'il were distorted (so there is alikelihood that those people might have been distorted in theshape of lizards). So he neither commanded (us to eat that) notforbade (us). AbuSa'id said: After some time Umar said: Allah,the Exalted and Majestic, has made it (a source of) benefit formore than one (person), for it is the common diet of shepherds.Had it been with me, I would have eaten that. Allah's Messenger(peace be upon him) disliked it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) having said: O people ofMedina do not eat the flesh of sacrificed animals beyond threedays. Ibn al-Muthanna said: Three days. They (the Companions ofthe Prophet) complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) that they had children and servants of theirs (to feed),whereupon he said: Eat, and feed others, and store, and make it aprovision of food.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) prohibited that fresh datesand grapes be mixed together and that fresh dates and unripedates be mixed together.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade (the preparation)of Nabidh in a green pitcher (besmeared with pitch).
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) warned against drinkingwhile standing.
Gabriel came to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and said:Muhammad, have you fallen ill? Thereupon he said: Yes. He(Gabriel) said: "In the name of Allah I exorcise you fromeverything and safeguard you from every evil that may harm youand from the eye of a jealous one. Allah would cure you and Iinvoke the name of Allah for you."
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: There was a woman fromBanu Isra'il who was short-statured and she walked in the companyof two tall women, with wooden sandals in her feet and a ring ofgold made of plates with musk filled in them and then looked up,and musk is the best of scents; then she walked between two womenand they (the people) did not recognise her, and she made agesture with her hand like this, and Shu'bah shook his hand inorder to give an indication how she shook her hand.
We were going with Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him). As wereached the place (known as) Arj there met (us) a poet who hadbeen reciting a poem. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) said: Catch the satan or detain the satan, for filling thebelly of a person with pus is better than stuffing his brain withpoetry.
When Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) came back from Tabukthey (his Companions) asked about the Last Hour. ThereuponAllah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There would be noneamongst the created beings living today on the earth (who wouldsurvive this century).
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: The world is sweet andgreen (alluring) and verily Allah is going to install you asvicegerent in it in order to see how you act. So avoid theallurement of women: verily , the first trial for the people ofIsra'il was caused by women. And in the hadith transmitted on theauthority of Ibn Bashshar the words are: "So that He should seehow you act."
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: The Paradise and theHell disputed with each other. The rest of the hadith is the sameas transmitted by AbuHurayrah (in this subject) up to the words:"It is essential for Me to fill up both of you."
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: There would be amongstyour caliphs a caliph who would give handfuls of wealth to thepeople but would not count it.
The One who is better than me, informed me that Allah's Apostle(peace be upon him) said to Ammar as he was digging the ditch (onthe occasion of the Battle of the Ditch) wiping over his head: Oson of Sumayyah, you will be involved in trouble and a group ofthe rebels would kill you.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) met him (Ibn Sayyad) and sodid AbuBakr and Umar on some of the roads of Medina. Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) said: Do you bear testimony to thefact that I am the Messenger of Allah? Thereupon he said: Do youbear testimony to the fact that I am the messenger of Allah?Thereupon Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: I affirm myfaith in Allah and in His Angels and in His Books, and what doyou see? He said: I see the throne over water. Thereupon Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) said: You see the throne of Iblisupon the water, and what else do you see? He said: I see twotruthfuls and a liar or two liars and one truthful. ThereuponAllah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Leave him. He has beenconfounded
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) asked Ibn Sayyad about theearth of Paradise. Thereupon he said: AbulQasim, it is like afine white musk, whereupon he (the Prophet) said: You have toldthe truth.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: When one of you yawns,he should try to restrain it with the help of his hand since itis the Satan that enters therein.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Do not take downanything from me, and he who took down anything from me exceptthe Qur'an, he should efface that and narrate from me, for thereis no harm in it and he who attributed any falsehood to me - andHammam said: I think he also said: "deliberately" - he should infact find his abode in the Hell-Fire.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The truthful and trusty merchant is associated with the prophets, the upright, and the martyrs."
Tirmidhi, Darimi and Daraqutni transmitted it, and Ibn Majah transmitted it on the authority of Ibn Umar. Tirmidhi said this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: There would be anannouncer (in Paradise) who would make this announcement: Verily!there is in store for you (everlasting) health and that youshould never fall ill and that you live (for ever) and do not dieat all. And that you would remain young and never grow old. Andthat you would always live in affluent circumstances and neverbecome destitute, as words of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious,are: "And it would be announced to them: This is the Paradise.You have been made to inherit it for what you used to do."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Soon there will appeardisagreement and dissension in my people; there will be peoplewho will be good in speech and bad in work. They recite theQur'an, but it does not pass their collar-bones. They will swervefrom the religion as an animal goes through the animal shot at.They will not return to it till the arrow comes back to itsnotch. They are worst of the people and animals. Happy is the onewho kills them and they kill him. They call to the book of Allah,but they have nothing to do with it. He who fights against themwill be nearer to Allah than them (the rest of the people). Thepeople asked: What is their sign? He replied: They shave thehead.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted andGlorious, said: Glory is His lower garment and Majesty is Hiscloak and (Allah says:) He who contends with Me in regard to themI shall torment him.
We travelled with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Theobserver of the fast observed it, and the breaker of the fastbroke it, but none of them found fault with each other.
