Umar asked the people, "Who remembers the narration of the Prophet about the affliction?" Hudhaifa said, "I heard the Prophet saying, 'The affliction of a person in his property, family and neighbors is expiated by his prayers, fasting, and giving in charity.' " 'Umar said, "I do not ask about that, but I ask about those afflictions which will spread like the waves of the sea." Hudhaifa replied, "There is a closed gate in front of those afflictions." 'Umar asked, "Will that gate be opened or broken?" He replied, "It will be broken." 'Umar said, "Then the gate will not be closed again till the Day of Resurrection." We said to Masruq, "Would you ask Hudhaifa whether 'Umar knew what that gate symbolized?" He asked him and he replied "He ('Umar) knew it as one knows that there will be night before tomorrow, morning."
While Allah's Apostle was sitting in the mosque with some people, three men came. Two of them came in front of Allah's Apostle and the third one went away. The two persons kept on standing before Allah's Apostle for a while and then one of them found a place in the circle and sat there while the other sat behind the gathering, and the third one went away. When Allah's Apostle finished his preaching, he said, "Shall I tell you about these three persons? One of them betook himself to Allah, so Allah took him into His grace and mercy and accommodated him, the second felt shy from Allah, so Allah sheltered Him in His mercy (and did not punish him), while the third turned his face from Allah and went away, so Allah turned His face from him likewise."
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "Yemen will be conquered and some people will migrate (from Medina) and will urge their families, and those who will obey them to migrate (to Yemen) although Medina will be better for them; if they but knew. Sham will also be conquered and some people will migrate (from Medina) and will urge their families and those who will obey them, to migrate (to Sham) although Medina will be better for them; if they but knew. 'Iraq will be conquered and some people will migrate (from Medina) and will urge their families and those who will obey them to migrate (to 'Iraq) although Medina will be better for them; if they but knew."

I entered a house in Medina with Abu Huraira, and he saw a man making pictures at the top of the house. Abu Huraira said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying that Allah said, 'Who would be more unjust than the one who tries to create the like of My creatures? Let them create a grain: let them create a gnat.' " Abu Huraira then asked for a water container and washed his arms up to his armpits. I said, "0 Abu Huraira! Is this something you have heard from Allah's Apostle?" He said, "The limit for ablution is up to the place where the ornaments will reach on the Day of Resurrection.'
The Prophet said during Hajjat-al-Wada', "Let the people be quiet and listen to me. After me, do not become disbelievers, by striking (cutting) the necks of one another."
My father and I went to Abi Barza Al-Aslami and my father said to him, "Tell us how Allah's Apostle used to offer the compulsory congregational prayers." He said, "He used to pray the Zuhr prayer, which you call the first prayer, as the sun declined at noon, the 'Asr at a time when one of us could go to his family at the farthest place in Medina while the sun was still hot. (The narrator forgot what Abu Barza had said about the Maghrib prayer), and the Prophet preferred to pray the 'Isha' late and disliked to sleep before it or talk after it. And he used to return after finishing the morning prayer at such a time when it was possible for one to recognize the person sitting by his side and he (the Prophet) used to recite 60 to 100 'Ayat' (verses) of the Qur'an in it."
I was present with the Apostle of Allah at the battle of Hunayn.We travelled on a hot day when the heat was extreme. We haltedunder the shade of a tree. When the sun passed the meridian, Iput on my coat of mail and rode on my horse. I came to theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) who was in a tent. I said:Peace, Allah's mercy and His blessings be upon you! The time ofdeparture has come. He said: Yes. He then said: Rise, Bilal. Hejumped out from beneath a gum-acacia tree and its shade was likethat of a bird. He said: I am at your service and at yourpleasure, and I make myself a sacrifice for you. He said: Putthe saddle on the horse for me. He then took out a saddle, bothsides of which were stuffed with palm-leaves; it showed noarrogance and pride. So he rode and we also rode. He thenmentioned the rest of the tradition.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When a man sends for his wife for the satisfaction of his need, she should go to him even if she may be occupied in baking bread (cooking food).

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Asad and the members of Ash'ar are good. They do not fly when fighting and are not treacherous. They pertain to me and I to them."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
AbdurRahman ibn Ghanam al-Ash'ari said: AbuAmir or AbuMalik toldme--I swear by Allah another oath that he did not believe me thathe heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: There willbe among my community people who will make lawful (the use of)khazz and silk. Some of them will be transformed into apes andswine.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) went out during the night and when he passed by me and called to me, I went out to him. He then passed by AbuBakr, and when he called him he came out to him. He then passed by Umar and when he called him he went out to him. He then set off and when he had entered a garden belonging to one of the Ansar he asked the owner of the garden to give us some ripening dates to eat. He brought a bunch and laid it down. When he and his companions had eaten he called for some cold water, after drinking which he said, "You will be questioned about this bounty on the day of resurrection." Thereupon Umar seized the bunch, and when he had thrown it on the ground so that the ripening dates were scattered towards Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him). He said, "Messenger of Allah, shall we be questioned about this on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied, "Yes, but not for three things: a rag with which a man covers his private parts, or a crumb with which he allays his hunger, or a shelter into which he worms himself to escape heat and cold."
Ahmad and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: If anyone says inthe morning: "There is no god but Allah alone Who has no partner;to Him belong the dominions, to Him praise is due, and He isOmnipotent," he will have a reward equivalent to that for settingfree a slave from among the descendants of Isma'il. He will haveten good deeds recorded for him, ten evil deeds deducted fromhim, he will be advanced ten degrees, and will be guarded fromthe Devil till the evening. If he says them in the evening, hewill have a similar recompense till the morning. The version ofHammad says: A man saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)in a dream and said: Apostle of Allah! AbuAyyash is relating suchand such on your authority. He said: AbuAyyash has spoken thetruth.
We accompanied the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) at Usfan,and Khalid ibn al-Walid was the chief of unbelievers. We offeredthe noon prayer. Thereupon, the unbelievers said: We sufferedfrom negligence; we became careless. We should have attacked themwhile they were praying. Thereupon the verse was revealed,relating to the shortening of the prayer (in time of danger)between the noon and afternoon (prayer). When the time of theafternoon prayer came, the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)stood facing the qiblah, and the unbelievers were standing infront of him. The people stood in a row behind the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) and there was another row behind thisrow. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) bowed and all ofthem bowed. He then prostrated and also the row near himprostrated. The other people in the second row remained standingand stood guard over them. When they performed two prostrationsand stood up, those who were behind them prostrated. The peoplein the front row near him then stepped backward taking the placeof the people in the second row and the second row took the placeof the first row. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) thenbowed and all of them bowed together. Then he and the row nearhim prostrated themselves. The other people in the second rowremained standing and stood guard over them. When the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) and the row near him (i.e. the frontrow) were seated, the people in the second row behind themprostrated themselves. Then all of them were seated. (He (theProphet) then uttered the salutation upon all of them. He prayedin his manner at Usfan as well as at the territory of BanuSulaym.
AbuImran said: We went out on an expedition from Medina with theintention of (attacking) Constantinople. AbdurRahman ibn Khalidibn al-Walid was the leader of the company. The Romans were justkeeping their backs to the walls of the city. A man (suddenly)attacked the enemy. Thereupon the people said: Stop! Stop! Thereis no god but Allah. He is putting himself into danger. AbuAyyubsaid: This verse was revealed about us, the group of the Ansar(the Helpers). When Allah helped His Prophet (peace be upon him)and gave Islam dominance, we said (i.e. thought): Come on! Let usstay in our property and improve it. Thereupon Allah, theExalted, revealed, "And spend of your substance in the cause ofAllah, and make not your hands contribute to (your destruction)".To put oneself into danger means that we stay in our property andcommit ourselves to its improvement, and abandon fighting (i.e.jihad). AbuImran said: AbuAyyub continued to strive in the causeof Allah until he (died and) was buried in Constantinople.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The gates of heaven areopened for four rak'ahs containing no taslim (salutation) beforethe noon prayer.
Marthad ibn Abdullah said: When AbuAyyub came upon us to fightthe infidels and in those days Uqbah ibn Amir was the Governor ofEgypt, he (Uqbah) delayed the sunset prayer. Hence AbuAyyub stoodand said: What kind of prayer is this, Uqbah? He said: We werebusy. He said: Did you not hear the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) say: My community will remain well, or he said: willremain on its natural condition, so long as it would not delaythe evening prayer until the stars shine brightly just like anetwork.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There are four characteristics (which may be called) the Sunnahs (the practices) of the messengers of Allah: Modesty, but some say, circumcision, the use of perfume, miswak and marriage.

AbuAyyub told of hearing Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "If anyone separates a mother from her child, Allah will separate him from his friends on the Day of Resurrection."
Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When one of you sneezes he should say, 'Praise be to Allah in every circumstance!' The one who responds to him should say, "Allah have mercy on you!' He should then reply, 'Allah guide you and grant you wellbeing!'"
Transmitted by Tirmidhi and Darimi.
A nomadic Arab came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I am fond of horses, are there any horses in Paradise?" He replied, "If you are granted entrance into Paradise, you will be brought a winged horse made of a ruby and will be mounted on it, then it will fly with you wherever you wish."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a tradition whose isnad is not strong, that AbuSawrah its transmitter is declared to be a weak traditionist, and that he had heard Muhammad ibn Isma'il say this. AbuSawrah's traditions were rejected, he being one who transmitted disacknowledged traditions.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: A journeyundertaken in the morning or evening (for Jihad ) in the way ofAllah is better than (anything) on which the sun rises or sets.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The tribes of Ansar,Muzaynah and Juhaynah and Ghifar and Ashja' and those from BanuAbdullah, they are my friends amongst the people and Allah andHis Messenger are their protectors.
When food was brought to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) heate out of that, and sent the remaining part to me, and one dayhe sent to me the left-over; (I found that he) had not taken fromit at all for it included garlic. I asked him whether that wasforbidden, whereupon he said: No, but I do not like it because ofits odour. He (AbuAyyub Ansari) said: Then I also do not likewhat you do not like.
AbuSirmah reported that when the time of death of AbuAyyub drewnear, he said: I used to conceal from you a thing which I heardfrom Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) and I heard Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) as saying: Had you not committedsins, Allah would have brought into existence a creation thatwould have committed sin (and Allah) would have forgiven them.
AbuDawud said: The narrators other than Sa'id reported from IbnWahb in this tradition: "(Killed him) with arrows inconfinement." When AbuAyyub al-Ansari was informed about it, hesaid: I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)prohibiting to kill in confinement. By Him in Whose hands my soulis, if there were a hen, I would not kill it in confinement.AbdurRahman ibn Khalid ibn al-Walid was informed about it (theProphet's prohibition). He set four slaves free.
AbuAyyub heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say:Capitals will be conquered at your hands, and you will have toraise companies in large armies. A man will be unwilling to joina company, so he will escape from his people and go round thetribes offering himself to them, saying: Whose place may I takein such and such expedition? Whose place may I take in such andsuch expedition? Beware: That man is a hireling to the last dropof his blood.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The witr is a duty forevery Muslim so if anyone wishes to observe it with five rak'ahs,he may do so; if anyone wishes to observe it with three, he maydo so, and if anyone wishes to observe it with one, he may do so.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) ate or drank, hesaid: "Praise be to Allah Who has given food and drink and madeit easy to swallow, and provided an exit for it.
When a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) asking him to give him an injunction and to make it brief, he said, "When you stand up to pray perform your prayer as if it were your last, do not say anything you will have to make an excuse for tomorrow, and resolve to give up all hopes of what men posses."
Ahmad transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who observed thefast of Ramadan and then followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal,it would be as if he fasted perpetually.
When this verse was revealed: `Wherein there are men desirous of growing in purity, for Allah loves all who purify themselves.' (9:108) Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: O people of Ansar, verily Allah has praised you for your purification. What is the nature of your purification? They said: We perform ablution for prayer, take a bath after seminal emission and cleanse ourselves with water. He said: That is it, so keep on doing it.
Transmitted by Ibn Majah.
AbutTufayl said: Fatimah came to AbuBakr asking him for theinheritance of the Prophet (peace be upon him). AbuBakr said: Iheard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If Allah,Most High, gives a Prophet some means of sustenance, that goes tohis successor.
A man who narrated his tradition to me said: I have seen theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) in al-Arj pouring water overhis head while he was fasting, either because of thirst orbecause of heat.
You people recite this verse "You who believe, care foryourselves; he who goes astray cannot harm you when you arerightly-guided," and put it in its improper place. Khalid'sversion has: We heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: Whenthe people see a wrongdoer and do not prevent him, Allah willsoon punish them all. Amr ibn Hushaym's version has: I heard theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If acts of disobedienceare done among any people and do not change them though the areable to do so, Allah will soon punish them all.
AbuBarzah said: I was with AbuBakr. He became angry at a man anduttered hot words. I said: Do you permit me, Caliph of theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him), that I cut off his neck?These words of mine removed his anger; he stood and went in. Hethen sent for me and said: What did you say just now? I said: (Ihad said:) Permit me that I cut off his neck. He said: Would youdo it if I ordered you? I said: Yes. He said: No, I swear byAllah, this is not allowed for any man after Muhammad (peace beupon him).
AbuBakr heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "No man will commit a sin, then get up and purify himself, then pray, then ask Allah's forgiveness without Allah forgiving him." Then he recited, "And those who, when they do something to be ashamed of, or who wrong themselves, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, but Ibn Majah did not mention the verse.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) mounted the pulpit, then wept and said, "Ask Allah for forgiveness and health, for after being granted certainty, one is given nothing better than health."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan tradition whose isnad is gharib.
When a man asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him), who among men was best, he replied, "He who has a long life and does what is good." He asked who among men was worst and he replied, "He who has a long life and does what is evil."
Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it.
When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) died the people disagreed about his burial, and AbuBakr said he had heard something from Allah's Messenger. He had said, "Allah takes a prophet only in the place where he wishes to be buried." So he told them to bury him where his bedding lay.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Asma' bint al-Hakam said: I heard Ali say: I was a man; when Iheard a tradition from the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him),Allah benefited me with it as much as He willed. But when someone of his companions narrated a tradition to me I adjured him.When he took an oath, I testified him. AbuBakr narrated to me atradition, and AbuBakr narrated truthfully. He said: I heard theapostle of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: When a servant (ofAllah) commits a sin, and he performs ablution well, and thenstands and prays two rak'ahs, and asks pardon of Allah, Allahpardons him. He then recited this verse: "And those who, whenthey commit indecency or wrong their souls, remember Allah"(iii.134).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who asks pardon is not a confirmed sinner, even if he returns to his sin seventy times aday.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A crafty one, a miser, and one who keeps reminding people of what he has given, will not enter Paradise."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "One who treats badly those under his authority will not enter Paradise."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "One who treats badly those under his authority will not enter Paradise." He was asked whether he had not told them that these people had more slaves and orphans than any other, and replied, "Yes, so treat them as generously as you treat your children and give them food from what you eat." They then asked what benefit they acquired from the world, and he replied, "A horse which you equip for riding it to fight in Allah's cause, and a slave who serves you sufficiently; and when he prays he is your brother."
Transmitted by Ibn Majah.
One day when Umar went in to visit AbuBakr as-Siddiq and found him pulling his tongue, he said, "Stop! Allah forgive you!" AbuBakr replied to him, "This has brought me down to dangerous places."
Malik transmitted it in al-Muwatta.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Accursed is he who harms a believer, or acts deceitfully towards him."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
You people recite this verse, "You who believe, care for yourselves; he who goes astray cannot harm you when you are rightly guided." I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "When people see something objectionable and do not change it, Allah will soon include them all in His punishment."
Ibn Majah and Tirmidhi, who declared it to be sahih, transmitted it.
Amr ibn Hurayth quoted AbuBakr as-Siddiq as saying that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) told them the Dajjal would come forth from a land in the East called Khurasan, followed by people whose faces resembled shields covered with skin.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If a man sells (his)property and the man who buys it becomes insolvent, and theseller does not receive the price of the property he had sold,but finds his very property with him (i.e. the buyer), he is moreentitled to it (than others). If the buyer dies, then the ownerof the property is equal to the creditors.
